Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the success of artificial insemination (AI) using frozen semen with different genetic qualities of Friesian Holstein Bull. In this research, the bulls came from the artificial insemination center of Singosari, consisting of Friesian Holstein bulls with proven bull certificates and the pure breed from embryo transfer. The frozen semen was produced by standard semen processing in the artificial insemination center of Singosari. The inseminated female totals were 56 head of Friesian Holstein crossbred in Pujon district, Malang, Indonesia. The females were divided into two groups: 28 cows receiving insemination from frozen semen of proven bull (T1) and 28 from pure breed FH bull from embryo transfer (T2). The females were chosen with purposive sampling with the criteria, have a Body Condition Score (BCS) of at least 2.5 (scale 1–5), have normal reproductive organs, and exhibit the clear estrus sign. Artificial insemination was performed with a single dose at the eight hour after estrus. Semen deposition was at the corpus uteri, while the thawing process was performed at 22–23°C for 60 seconds. The result showed that the non-return rate 1 (NRR-1), non-return rate 2 (NRR-2), and conception rate (CR) values for AI using frozen semen from a proven bull were 96%, 75% and 43%, respectively. In contrast, the percentage of AI success using pure breed FH bull from embryo transfer was 93%, 86%, and 64%. In conclusion, AI success using pure breed FH bull from embryo transfer was better than proven bull frozen semen.

Abstract

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) poses significant threats to livestock production systems globally, particularly cloven-hoofed animals. Indonesia's recent FMD outbreak, following 35 years of disease-free status, created substantial economic challenges for the dairy sector. Despite the scale of the outbreak, limited research has focused on its specific financial impacts on smallholder dairy farms, creating a critical knowledge gap for effective policy development. This study analyses the financial impact of foot and mouth disease (FMD) on dairy farming, focusing on changes in revenue, costs, and profitability before and after the outbreak. Through descriptive and input?output analysis, economic losses were quantified on the basis of structured surveys and secondary data from affected dairy farmers. The findings indicate that the FMD significantly reduced milk production revenue (-8%) while increasing overall farm costs (+6%), leading to a drastic 84% decline in farm profits. Increased spending on veterinary treatments, feed supplementation, and transportation further exacerbated financial instability, whereas a slight increase in livestock sales (+11%) served as a short-term coping mechanism. These results highlight the need for enhanced disease control measures, financial assistance programs, and policy interventions to support affected farmers. Implementing effective vaccination strategies, improving biosecurity protocols, and establishing government-backed economic relief programs can mitigate the financial burden of FMD on the dairy sector. This study contributes to the limited literature on the economic consequences of livestock disease outbreaks in Indonesia and emphasises the need for long-term resilience strategies to sustain dairy farm profitability and stability in disease-prone regions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, small-scale dairy cattle farming dominates, constituting 80% of the industry, with economic pursuits secondary to subsistence needs. Challenges include limited green fodder, declining farmers, low milk quality, diseases, and inadequate infrastructure. Despite these issues, dairy farming persists, particularly in East Java's Malang Regency, a major contributor to national dairy cattle population and milk production. The significance of Pujon Sub-District comes to the forefront, housing the Sinau Andandani Ekonomi (SAE) Pujon Cooperative established in 1975. This cooperative plays a pivotal role in supporting small-scale farmers in Pujon, actively addressing challenges through collaborative efforts. This cooperative facilitates small-scale farmers in Pujon, addressing challenges through collective efforts. In such systems, family labor, including women and children, is integral due to limited availability. The study aims to analyse the income of dairy cattle farmers and their labour allocation as the members of SAE Pujon Cooperative, Pujon District, Regency of Malang. The data of the farm management parameters were collected through a survey at the study area. The results indicate that the average income of the farmers is IDR 4,306,798 per month. Regarding labour allocations, wives work to household affairs and husbands focus more on farming activities. The research concludes that the income of dairy farmers and their labour allocation are related to the farm scale.

Abstract

This study investigated the critical issue of credit access and its implications for climate change adaptation among dairy farmers in East Java, Indonesia. Using survey cross-sectional data from a sample of 70 dairy farmers, this research employs a combination of probit modelling and propensity score matching (PSM) to examine the determinants of credit access and evaluate its impact on climate change adaptation. The findings indicate that credit access is positively and significantly associated with factors such as farming experience, family size, and the number of employed household members. These factors emerge as pivotal determinants shaping farmers' ability to secure credit. The analysis employing PSM further reveals a notable effect of credit access on climate change adaptation. Farmers with access to credit demonstrate a greater propensity to adopt and implement a greater number of climate change adaptation strategies. The positive association between credit access and climate change adaptation underscores the potential role of financial support in enhancing farmers' resilience to environmental challenges. This suggests that facilitating credit access for farmers could significantly contribute to promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the context of climate change. These findings have implications for policymakers, agricultural practitioners, and financial institutions. By leveraging these insights, targeted interventions can be devised to improve credit accessibility for farmers, thereby fostering effective climate change adaptation strategies within the agricultural sector.
