Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of teat dipping of Ettawa crossbred goat using babadotan leaves (Ageratum conyzoides Linn.) extract on the number of Staphylococcus aureusin milk. The udder inflammation degree also was determined using California Mastitis Test (CMT). The treatments were post milking teat dipping using antiseptic solutions containing 1%, 3%, and 5% of babadotan leaves extract (T1, T2 and T3, respectively). Milk samples were collected at before treatment (H0) and on the day 3, 6 and 9 day of the treatments (H3, H6 and H9, respectively). Commercially antiseptic povidone iodine was used as positive control (K+). Experimental research design was completely randomized design (CRD) split plot types, with the different extract concentration as the main plot and the day of treatment as subplot. CMT scores was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that babadotan leaves extract 5% had the same effectiveness (p>0,05) with povidone iodine to reduce the number of Staphylococcus aureusin milk. All extract concentrations (1%, 3% and 5%) had the same effectiveness (H>c0,05(3)) to decrease the CMT scores by postmilking teat dip treatments for 9 days. Keywords:Teat dipping, Ageratum conyzoides (L)., Staphylococcus aureus, CMT score

Abstract

The article aims to compare some streams of extension by describing their ospects, objectives and how they work in practice. Streams of extension proposed by Fell (1997), Coutts and Roberts (2003) and Roling (1995) were compared to get some understanding about in what situation and how suppose to execute the right stream (s) in such condition. Extension officers and decision makers in the extension field should consider those comparisons since some streams might be more useful when they are combined together to fill some weaknesses with others' strengths. In the last section, a local example of the application of extension streams combination in Indonesia is demonstrated to give clear explanation for readers

Abstract

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a technique that is widely used by farmers to improve the genetic quality of livestock. This method can be increased in value by using sexing semen that can regulate and produce the sex of the offspring as expected. The purpose of this study was to determine the success of AI by using frozen sexing semen on Ongole Crossbred cows in Malang Regency. The materials used were 98 Ongole crossbred cows in traditional farm of Malang Regency especially in Pakis, Tumpang, Jabung and Singosari Districts. The method used was a field experiment with two treatments: 49 cows were inseminated by using frozen sexing semen (P1) and 49 cows were inseminated by using non sexing semen (P0). The variables observed were the Non-Return Rate (NRR) value observedin 3 estrous cycle after AI and CR value based on pregnancy observation at 8 months of pregnancy. Data were analyzed descriptively and continued with a one-proportion z-test. The datashowed that the CR value on P1; P0 were 55.10% and 65, 31% respectively.furthemore, the NRR value on P1 from NRR1 to NRR3 were 87,76%, 73,47% and 67,35%, while on P0 95,92%, 83,67% and 75,51% respectively. It can be conclude thatCR and NRR value of sexing semenwas lower than non sexing semen, however sexing semen can be applied for certain purposes such as producing offspring as expected

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the dose of mangosteen rinds juice (0%, 2%, and 4%) in a diluent Tris Aminomethane-egg yolk. The fresh semen was collected once a week using an artificial vagina from five Limousin bulls aged 8 to 11 years old with a body weight of 895-1034 kg. The research method was experimental laboratory using a randomized block design with 3 treatments and 10 replications. If there were significant influences among the variables, it would be then tested by Duncan’s Multiple Range test method. The result showed that Tris Aminomethane-egg yolk diluent with 4% of mangosteen rinds juice suplementation had significant differences (P<0.05) on the sperm quality kept for 72 hours in the cold storage in terms of the percentage of sperm motility and sperm viability. It also had a significant difference (P<0.05) on sperm abnormality particularly within the 1st hour. It can be concluded that the addition of 4% mangosteen rinds juice in Tris Aminomethane-egg yolk diluent could protect Limousin bull semen quality (motility, viability and abnormality) after stored for 72 hours at 50C. Keywords: Abnormality, liquid semen, mangosteen rind, motility, viability

Abstract

The study aims at examining the effect of adding tea waste into the quail feed on the aspects of the quail production performances including feed consumption, daily egg production (Hen Day Production/HDP) and feed conversion. Materials on this study were 100 quails aged 7 months old with experimental period of 35 days. Tea waste used in this research was obtained from the tea industry of Wonosari (Lawang). The method was experiment, and the design was one-way completely randomized design. The treatments used in this study were level of adding tea waste of 0; 1.25; 2.5; 3.75; and 5.0% in feed. Every treatment was repeated 4 times and every replication used 5 quails. The study shows that tea waste addition in feed did not significantly influence (P>0.05) feed consumption, daily egg production (Hen Day Production/HDP, and feed conversion of quail. The study concludes that tea waste addition into the feed until level 5% did not influence feed consumption, HDP (Hen Day Production), and feed conversion of quail. It could be suggested to do further research involving the increasing level or by taking the topic of how to minimize the anti-nutrient effect (tannin) of tea waste. Keywords: quails, tea waste, production performance
