Abstract

In this study, the effects of a multipurpose microbial inoculant on the chemical composition, physical quality, fermentation characteristics, and in vitro ruminal digestibility of sorghum silage-based fermented complete feed were evaluated. Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) was harvested at 90 days of age and subsequently formulated with soybean meal, distilled dried grains with solubles (DDGS), tapioca dregs (onggok), and pollard and then ensiled for six months. These mixtures were treated with sterile distilled water (CON) and commercial multipurpose microbial inoculant (SBP®) (TRT) and then ensiled into 5 kg of mini silo in quadruplicate for 14 days. After ensiling, the chemical composition, physical quality, fermentation profile, and in vitro ruminal digestibility of the silage were evaluated. Rumen fluid was collected from two rumen-cannulated Bali cattle for digestibility analysis. The data were analysed using an independent sample t-test. The dry matter (DM) (P<0.05) and crude protein (CP) concentration (P<0.05) decreased in the INO treatment group. Compared with those in the CON group, the fermentation characteristics in the TRT group improved, as indicated by a lower pH (P<0.05) and a higher lactic acid concentration (P<0.05). The TRT treatment also resulted in greater in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) (P<0.05). However, organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and acid detergent fibre (ADF) were not affected by inoculant supplementation (P>0.05). In conclusion, supplementation with multipurpose microbes improved the fermentation characteristics and in vitro ruminal digestibility of sorghum silage-based fermented complete feed but had limited effects on the fibre fractions and organic matter content.

Abstract

The Goat Village Program in Jembayan Tengah Village, Loa Kulu District, represents a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-based social investment designed to strengthen rural economic resilience through goat farming development. This study evaluates the program’s effectiveness using the Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative data from interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), field observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that the program generated substantial socio-economic benefits between 2018 and 2024, including increased household income, strengthened livestock-based savings, and reduced agricultural production costs using manure as an organic fertilizer substitute. The program also contributed to community welfare through livestock distribution, free manure distribution, and sacrificial (Kurban) animal donations, which reinforced social cohesion. The SROI ratio of 6.77 demonstrates that every IDR 1 invested generated IDR 6.77 in social value. This study highlights the effectiveness of CSR-based livestock empowerment programs in creating sustainable economic, social, environmental, and community benefits while emphasizing the importance of continuous mentoring and improved livestock data management to sustain program impacts.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Quercetin role and liquid nitrogen vapor equilibration time on the post-thawed semen quality of Merino Rams. Semen collected from four rams was processed using a completely randomized factorial design (4 × 3) with quercetin concentrations (0, 30, 60, and 90 ?M) and three vapor equilibration durations at a height of 10 cm (5, 10, and 15 min). The evaluated semen quality parameters included individual motility, viability, morphological abnormalities, and Intact Plasma Membrane (IPM). The results showed that, before freezing, supplementation with 60 ?M quercetin (P < 0.01) maintained significantly higher individual motility than supplementation with the other concentrations. Post-thawing process, both quercetin concentration and equilibration duration significantly (P<0.05) influenced sperm functional parameters. The combination of 60 ?M quercetin with a 15-min equilibration time produced the best performance, with motility of 55.00 ± 2.74%, viability of 93.31 ± 2.06%, and plasma membrane integrity of 37.22 ± 7.90%. PCA revealed that in the before-freezing phase, PC1 (37.23%) was mainly associated with abnormalities and membrane integrity, while PC2 (28.44%) was influenced by viability and motility, explaining 65.67% of the total variance. In the post- thawing phase, PC1 (46.0%) was characterized by motility and membrane integrity, whereas PC2 (21.63%) was associated with abnormalities and plasma membrane integrity, with a cumulative variance of 67.63%. In conclusion, the combination of 60 ?M quercetin and a 15-min vapor equilibration time represents the most effective protocol for preserving individual motility and plasma membrane integrity in frozen Merino ram semen.

Abstract

The beef cattle subsector is vital for national food security. However, Indonesia faces a persistent supply gap and reliance on imports. West Central Kalimantan (Sukamara, West Kotawaringin, and Lamandau) possesses significant potential for local beef cattle development, yet productivity remains constrained by limited feed systems and weak sectoral integration. This study aimed to formulate a sustainable agrosilvopastoral development model for the region. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) with qualitative data from 135 respondents. The EFA identified four key factors: technical, economic, socio-institutional, and environmental, with technical aspects being the most dominant. MDS analysis indicated that the system is moderately sustainable, identifying technology as the weakest dimension. Sensitivity analysis revealed that year-round feed availability, livestock-plantation integration, institutional support, and market access are the most critical leverage points for sustainability. Based on these findings, an agrosilvopastoral model was developed, integrating livestock, agriculture, and forestry by optimizing local resources such as oil palm plantations and industrial forests. The model enhances land-use efficiency, productivity, and farmer income while strengthening environmental resilience. This research provides a context-specific, applicable strategy to support sustainable livestock development and national food security

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the nutritive value and in vitro digestibility forage (Napier grass and legumes) under different harvest periods and cropping patterns. A factorial randomized block design (FRBD) with two factors was used: harvest period (H: two periods) and cropping pattern (C: eight treatments), with four replications (Blocks). The variables in this experiment were nutritive value (dry matter/DM, ash, organic matter/OM, crude protein/CP, crude fibre/CF, extracted ether/EE, and nitrogen-free extract/NFE) and in vitro digestibility (DM and OM). Analysis of variance revealed that the harvest period, cropping pattern, and their interaction had highly significant effects (P<0.01) on the nutritive value of the forage (ash, OM, and NFE). During the harvest period, the cropping pattern strongly influenced (P<0.01) the DM and CP of the forage, and only the harvest period highly significantly affected (P<0.01) the EE. Neither the cropping pattern nor the interaction significantly affected the in vitro digestibility of the forage (P>0.05). The harvest period had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on in vitro digestibility. The dry matter digestibility (59.32%) and organic matter digestibility (65.44%) were greater in the second forage harvested (H2) than in the first harvest period (52.73% and 62.29%, respectively). Overall, the quality of forage is influenced by the harvest period, cropping pattern and their combination. Compared with monocropping napier grass (C1 and C2), intercropping napier grass with legumes can increase the protein content and digestibility of forage.

Abstract

Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, is a beef cattle production centre with 47,218 cattle and 9,540 farming households, yet its contribution to national food security is constrained by inter-island supply chain inefficiencies rooted in institutional coordination failure. This qualitative study, based on 13 respondents, aimed to analyse the institutional structure using the Food Supply Chain Network (FSCN) approach, measure operational performance using the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model, and assess distribution efficiency through marketing margin and farmers' share analysis. Data were collected via snowball sampling, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and field observation during May–July 2025, triangulated with official quarantine and port documents. The supply chain operates through two channels: a local channel (farmer's share 82.6%, 1–3-day cycle) and an inter-island channel (farmer's share 75.4%, 21–28-day cycle). SCOR performance showed good reliability (90–98%) but weak responsiveness attributable to vessel scheduling constraints rather than actor inefficiency. Collector operational costs reached approximately IDR 452,000 per head across 12 components, dominated by holding and quarantine feed costs (46.5%). Four critical findings were identified as manifestations of institutional coordination failure: duplication of Rose Bengal Test screening, unregulated transfer of test-tube costs to traders, mismatch between minimum weight regulation and market demand, and unformalized port charges. This study contributes by demonstrating that the integrated FSCN–SCOR–margin framework detects institutional inefficiencies unidentifiable by single frameworks, and that eliminating one of these institutional costs alone, the informal RBT test-tube pass-through, raises inter-island farmer's share from 75.4% to approximately 75.5%, indicating that further, low-cost institutional reform offers a viable, if modest, path toward the 80% farmer's share level conventionally cited as a reference point in the Indonesian marketing literature, rather than a formally validated efficiency benchmark.

Abstract

In this study, the effects of different levels of organic and potassium chloride fertilizers on the growth, production, and nutrient content of Pakchong grass were evaluated. The experiment used a 6 × 4 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design with 25 replications. Each polybag was filled with 5 kg of latosol soil. Organic fertilizer was applied at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, and 12.5 t ha?¹, while Potassium fertilizer was applied at 0, 150, 200, and 250 kg ha?¹. No significant interaction (P>0.05) between organic fertilizer and KCl was observed for growth and production parameters at 8 weeks after planting, although each factor significantly affected several individual parameters. Organic fertilizer significantly affected stem diameter, number of leaves, fresh biomass, and dry biomass, with the best overall response occurring at 12.5 t ha?¹ level. Potassium fertilizer at 250 kg ha?¹ significantly increased the plant height, stem diameter, number of tillers, number of leaves, fresh biomass, and dry biomass. No significant interaction (P>0.05) was detected for dry matter, ash, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, acid detergent fibre, or neutral detergent fibre. In conclusion, organic fertilizer improved leaf number and biomass production, with responses beginning at 2.5 t ha?¹ for leaf number and 7.5 t ha?¹ for biomass production. Potassium chloride fertilizer at 250 kg ha?¹ improved vegetative growth and dry biomass. However, their combination did not improve the nutrient content or the leaf-to-stem ratio.
