Abstract

Social media, an Internet-based technology, enables students to receive and share information, leading to an upsurge in English learning. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are some of the most popular social networking apps for students. Thus, the present research was conducted to expose non-EFL/ESL university students' preferences in learning English. A mixed-method research design was used to process the research, and an open-ended questionnaire (Quanti) and semi-structured interview (Quali) were employed. Using purposive sampling, 77 students participated voluntarily, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The finding revealed that YouTube was the most preferred among other platforms, TikTok was the second most favourable, followed by Instagram, and Facebook was the least. The preferences were determined according to the enjoyment, system quality, information quality, interactivity, perceived usefulness and satisfaction with the applications. The present research is beneficial as evidence for an upcoming study comparing the effectiveness of these social media platforms for future English education, especially the features and exploring the users' belief in utilizing the devices.

Abstract

A recent study suggests that poetry might offer unique insights into improving English language development. Despite these benefits, many language teachers avoid using poetry since teaching English through poetry in non-English-speaking countries is difficult. Poetry's ability to support language development has been overlooked due to teachers’ challenges. This shows a serious lack of understanding of teachers’ pedagogical skills in using literature to educate. Large-scale quantitative studies have examined teachers' experiences and challenges. Nevertheless, this study focuses on what they consider crucial pedagogical factors in employing poetry in English classes. This qualitative survey includes 15 English teachers. A teacher questionnaire was given to discuss their needs in constructing poetry-based English language learning practices, and interviews were performed to examine kindergarten and elementary school English language learning. The findings portrayed that poetry improves pupils' listening and speaking skills and vocabulary building. In addition, they thought that songs/lyrics and poetry should be used more in teaching and learning. A thematic analysis showed how teaching strategies, poem selection, and impact are varied.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe present study explores the process of instilling religious moderation values in English teaching at an Indonesian vocational school. Furthermore, challenges in instilling religious moderation values and solutions are discussed. The qualitative case study method was used in this study. Data were gathered through observation, semi-structured interviews with two English language teachers and two students at an Indonesian vocational school, and documentation. The findings reveal that internalization of religious moderation values can be incorporated through verbal stimulation (reminders and advice), English material, teaching methods, teachers' behavior, and assignments. These values include tolerance, discussion, justice, dynamics, creativity, and innovation. Meanwhile, challenges include students' personality differences and a lack of English textbooks containing religious moderation values. Several strategies were used to tackle the obstacles, including motivating students to participate actively in the teaching and learning process and exploring English material dealing with religious moderation. The implication of the study was discussed. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi proses penanaman nilai-nilai moderasi beragama dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah kejuruan (SMK) di Indonesia. Selanjutnya, tantangan yang dihadapi guru bahasa Inggris dalam menanamkan nilai-nilai moderasi beragama, dan solusinya juga dibahas. Metode studi kasus kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara semi terstruktur dengan dua guru bahasa Inggris dan dua siswa SMK di Indonesia, dan dokumentasi. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa internalisasi nilai moderasi beragama dapat diwujudkan melalui stimulasi verbal (pengingat dan nasihat), materi bahasa Inggris, metode pengajaran, perilaku guru, dan penugasan. Nilai-nilai tersebut antara lain toleransi, diskusi, keadilan, dinamika, kreativitas, dan inovasi. Guru bahasa Inggris menghadapi tantangan karena perbedaan kepribadian siswa dan terbatasnya sumber atau materi bahasa Inggris yang mengandung nilai-nilai moderasi agama. Adapun beberapa strategi yang digunakan guru untuk mengatasi kendala tersebut antara lain memotivasi siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif dalam proses belajar mengajar dan mengeksplorasi materi bahasa Inggris yang berhubungan dengan moderasi agama. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aimed at examining whether employing 9GAG humorous memes as ELT materials is effective in developing EFL learners’ speaking ability and their willingness to speak English. A group of Indonesian intermediate EFL learners were selected as respondents for this study and a series of pre-test was conducted to indicate their initial speaking ability and willingness to communicate before the incorporation of 9GAG humorous memes. The group then learned and practiced speaking skills using their routine topics but complemented with humorous materials adopted from the 9GAG application. Ten teaching and learning sessions were held and were followed by post-test to measure participants’ learning achievements as to speaking ability and willingness to speak. A SPSS software was used to calculate samples t-test to make comparisons between the pre-test and post-test of group’s test scores. The results indicated that using 9GAG humorous memes resulting in laughter is impactful in creating a relaxed atmosphere for EFL learners during learning sessions. Students' attention, retention, creativity, and critical thinking are also maintained and increased. It is concluded that humorous materials in language classes are effectively applicable in increasing learners’ speaking ability and willingness to communicate.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji apakah penggunaan meme humor 9GAG sebagai materi ELT efektif dalam mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara dan kemauan siswa EFL untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris. Sekelompok pelajar EFL menengah Indonesia dipilih sebagai responden untuk penelitian ini dan serangkaian tes awal dilakukan untuk menunjukkan kemampuan berbicara awal mereka dan kemauan untuk berkomunikasi sebelum penggabungan meme lucu 9GAG. Kelompok tersebut kemudian belajar dan mempraktekkan keterampilan berbicara menggunakan topik rutin mereka tetapi dilengkapi dengan materi humor yang diadopsi dari aplikasi 9GAG. Sepuluh sesi belajar mengajar diadakan dan dilanjutkan dengan post test untuk mengukur prestasi belajar peserta dalam hal kemampuan berbicara dan kemauan berbicara. Software SPSS digunakan untuk menghitung sample t-test untuk membuat perbandingan antara nilai tes awal dan tes akhir kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan meme humor 9GAG yang menghasilkan Salah satu keunggulan utama indohoki77 adalah antarmuka pengguna yang ramah dan mudah digunakan. Para pemain dapat dengan mudah mengakses berbagai permainan dan fitur yang ditawarkan. Desain situs yang modern dan responsif memastikan bahwa para pemain dapat menikmati permainan dengan lancar tanpa gangguan teknis. tawa berdampak dalam menciptakan suasana santai bagi peserta didik EFL selama sesi pembelajaran. Perhatian, retensi, kreativitas, dan pemikiran kritis siswa juga dijaga dan ditingkatkan. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa materi humor di kelas bahasa dapat diterapkan secara efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dan kemauan siswa untuk berkomunikasi.

Abstract

The controversy of whether the English language should be taught inductively or deductively, implicitly or explicitly, consciously or subconsciously does not seem to arrive at its compromises yet. In the meantime, the methodology for English language teaching in the Indonesian EFL context has been ascribed to the inductive teaching paradigm. However, practical demands seem to have forced the teachers to develop their own teaching strategies. It is a serious problem for English teachers, especially during their early-career teaching. The current study aims to investigate problems in the implementation of inductive approaches along with some key strategies to cope with the problems. The data were obtained through a semi-structured interview involving two EFL teachers. The data was sourced from the participants' stated experiences and documents of their recorded classroom practice. The results yielded numerous contextual problems using an inductive approach, including students' capability, grammar complexity, achievement, and time insufficiency. The study also revealed key strategies teachers take, including re-adjusting their instruction procedures when an inductive approach is applied. The study implies that teachers and educational practitioners should be aware of redesigning existing learning methodologies that can be more contextualized and meet the learners' needs.

Abstract

ABSTRACTA paraphrasing strategy instruction model has been developed through a research and development method. The developed model is called the 3RI (Read, Rewrite, Revise, Integrate) paraphrasing strategy instruction model. This is a part of the research and development, which is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the developed model. For evaluation, the field testing was carried out in the English study program at the University of Mataram. Seventy-five students who were taking academic writing courses were involved in this study. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed model, the students self-assessed before and after having been treated using the 3RI paraphrasing strategy instruction model. After the treatment, the students were asked to fill in the questionnaire, which covered statements about the students' responses toward the instruction with the developed model. The results indicated a significant difference between the student's scores in the self-assessment before and after the treatment. Further, the students generally responded positively to the treatment with the developed model. The 3RI paraphrasing strategy instruction model can be one of the ways to help students avoid plagiarism and develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. ABSTRAKSebuah model instruksi strategi perparafiran telah dikembangkan melalui metode penelitian dan pengembangan. Model yang dikembangkan disebut sebagai model instruksi strategi perparafiran 3RI (Read, Rewrite, Revise, Integrate). Ini merupakan bagian dari penelitian dan pengembangan yang bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas model yang dikembangkan. Untuk evaluasi, uji lapangan dilakukan di program studi bahasa Inggris di Universitas Mataram. Tujuh puluh lima mahasiswa yang mengikuti mata kuliah penulisan akademis terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas model yang dikembangkan, mahasiswa melakukan penilaian diri sebelum dan setelah menerima perlakuan menggunakan model instruksi strategi perparafiran 3RI. Setelah perlakuan, mahasiswa diminta untuk mengisi kuesioner yang mencakup pernyataan tentang tanggapan mahasiswa terhadap instruksi dengan model yang dikembangkan. Hasilnya menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan antara skor penilaian diri mahasiswa sebelum dan setelah perlakuan. Selanjutnya, mahasiswa umumnya memberikan tanggapan positif terhadap perlakuan dengan model yang dikembangkan. Abstract

Current educational theories and studies emphasize the need to use innovative and collaborative approaches to improve student’s learning experience, especially in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). This study explores the obstacles and strategies for using these teaching approaches in the Indonesian ELT context. The research used mixed methods with a convergent parallel design. The questionnaires were used to gather data from 42 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers, while semi-structured interviews were done with 6 teachers to explore their perspectives and experiences. The research was conducted in one district in West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The significant findings emphasize the critical impact of innovative and collaborative learning on improving students’ learning outcomes. The results also found obstacles that impede innovative and collaborative actual use, such as inadequate resources, teacher reluctance, and lack of appropriate teacher professional development. This research has potential implications beyond Indonesia and provides significant insights and suggestions for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders in comparable EFL situations globally to promote creative and collaborative learning environments.

Abstract

The acquisition of vocabulary significantly impacts language learning since it serves as the foundation for developing linguistic abilities. As a result, instructors must provide students with a contextual framework and various media resources to help them build an extensive understanding of language usage. Using information and communication technology (ICT) in the classroom can maximise student learning by maximising their potential (Adisti, 2018). The Busuu language learning application is one of the online learning resources available. The researchers goal in this study is to examine at how the Busuu language learning application affects vocabulary acquisition among students in a vocational school in Aceh, Indonesia. A quantitative research approach was used, utilizing a survey questionnaire and experimental teaching. Purposive sampling was employed to select 30 students from the Business and Marketing class to participate in the research. The findings indicate that students, performance in acquiring new English vocabulary improved significantly following the intervention. The pre-test results, averaging 6.86, and the post-test, averaging 9.9, show a 3.03 improvement. The Busuu application also received favourable feedback from research participants, who found it to be enjoyable and educational.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main purpose of this study was to examine the perception of students regarding teacher self-efficacy and its influence on their motivation in the context of learning. The researchers used mixed-method research as the research methodology. To gather the data, the researchers used some instruments, namely a questionnaire and an interview. The questionnaire was distributed to 30 undergraduate students at a university located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The instrument used was adopted from the Teacher's Self-Efficacy Scale Questionnaire developed by Tschannen-Moran & Hoy (2001). The data underwent both descriptive and statistical analysis using SPSS. The findings indicated that the students had a moderate degree of perceptions of teacher self-efficacy. In addition, the students' perceptions of teacher self-efficacy also influenced their motivation in learning. In other words, when students believe their lecturers have high self-efficacy in teaching, they are more motivated because they trust that the lecturers are capable of delivering the materials effectively and in an engaging manner. Therefore, it is important for lecturers to focus on building and cultivating their self-efficacy to positively influence students' learning outcomes. ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui persepsi siswwa terhadap efikasi diri guru dan dampaknya terhadap motivasi belajar mereka. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian mixed-method sebagai metolodi penelitian. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan beberapa instrument berupa kuesioner dan interview. Peneliti menyebarkan kuesioner tersebut kepada 30 mahasiswa S1 di suatu universitas di Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Instrumen yang digunakan diadaptasi dari Kuesioner Skala Efikasi Diri Guru yang dikembangkan oleh Tschannen-Moran & Hoy (2001). Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan statistik. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa siswa mempunyai tingkat persepsi efikasi diri guru yang sedang. Selain itu, persepsi siswa terhadap efikasi diri guru juga mempengaruhi motivasi mereka dalam belajar. Dengan kata lain, ketika mahasiswa yakin bahwa dosennya memiliki efikasi diri yang tinggi dalam mengajar, maka mahasiswa akan lebih termotivasi karena yakin bahwa dosen tersebut mampu menyampaikan materi secara efektif dan menarik. Oleh karena itu, penting bagi dosen untuk fokus membangun dan menumbuhkan efikasi diri agar dapat memberikan dampak positif terhadap hasil belajar mahasiswa.How to Cite: Kusumaningtyas, B.W.D., Mbato, C.L. & Ena, O.T.
