Abstract

ABSTRACTTechnological improvement has changed our educational systems from face-to-face learning to virtual learning, namely online learning. WhatsApp (WA) is an application that can be a medium to support students' English learning in a more accessible, flexible, and helpful way. The objectives of this study are to know the students' perceptions and academic flow of using the WA application in English learning, to understand the differences in their perceptions and academic flow based on their gender, age, and semester, and to know the correlation between both their perception and academic flow. The data was collected by quantitative research in survey research design. 172 State Islamic College students who studied English courses were selected randomly as the sample of this study. The data were gained through the questionnaire distributed online. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Multivariate Analysis, and Correlation of SPPS. The findings revealed that the students positively perceive using WhatsApp applications in their English learning. Meanwhile, it is also an application that can directly impact their perceptions and academic flow. However, the correlation analysis found that students' perceptions do not have a significant relationship with the academic flow (r = .117, p > .05). ABSTRAKKemajuan teknologi telah mengubah sistem pendidikan kita dari pembelajaran tatap muka ke pembelajaran virtual, yaitu pembelajaran daring. Abstract

This study examines the views of students studying English in one of the English Language Education Study Programmes on the oral peer feedback they gave and received in an online English-speaking class. The online speaking class was observed to know the implementation of oral peer feedback. Thirty-eight students who were enrolled in the course completed a questionnaire, and afterward, four of these students participated in a semi-structured interview. The results obtained from the questionnaire indicated that students derived satisfaction from both giving and receiving oral feedback. Students also preferred to give and receive positive feedback. The students found that providing and receiving oral feedback benefited their learning process. In contrast, it was found that students indicated a stronger preference for providing affective feedback than cognitive and constructive feedback. The interview responses shed light on the reasons underlying these perceptions. The study also offers pedagogical insights related to implementing oral peer feedback in online speaking classes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aims to identify ELT lecturers' readiness to implement online learning. This research involved 30 ELT lecturers from three different time zones in Indonesia: the western, middle, and eastern parts of Indonesia. The study employed an explanatory mixed method in which the quantitative stage was conducted prior to the qualitative stage. Drawing on data from questionnaires and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), the study found that regardless of the learning mode, lecturers' instruction remains similar except for the assessment process. However, this research also found that geographical location, learning materials, internet connection, and affordability contribute to lecturers' preference in selecting learning modes. This research implies that lecturers are ready to embrace the most of online learning; however, the utmost benefit from online learning can only be attained if the supporting systems are available for both lecturers and students. Abstract

This research explored the implementation of multiliteracy pedagogy during online teaching in higher education. A qualitative method was used with interviews, observation, and document analysis. Five EFL teachers who taught reading and writing courses were the participants. Findings showed that the teachers utilized strategies in the class during online learning, like integrating students' prior knowledge with the new material, using students' and teachers' center methods, creating strategies to build students' critical thinking, and giving students projects. However, in scaffolding dimensions, some teachers argued that face-to-face learning was the more appropriate way to maximize scaffolding. Adapting the framework of the New London Group (1996), Kalantzis and Cope (2005), and Cope and Kalantzis (2015), the result indicated that five EFL teachers implemented multiliteracy pedagogy by using different strategies: creating an enjoyable environment in situated practice, utilizing many multimodalities in overt instruction, building students' critical thinking in critical framing, and existing knowledge and skills into students' project in transformed practice, and others. Based on the results, several suggestions will be valuable to future researchers: integrating multiliteracy pedagogy into other courses and investigating multiliteracy pedagogy in online and face-to-face learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the impact of the pandemic on student performance in Learning English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) through a comparative analysis of the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach. The sudden shift to remote and hybrid learning during the pandemic required a transformation in education, prompting an investigation into its effects on students' English language proficiency. The research was conducted with a diverse sample of students across multiple disciplines. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, including academic records, language proficiency tests, and observations. Results revealed significant differences in student performance between the two periods, highlighting the pandemic's impact on English learning outcomes. The study also explored various factors influencing these disparities, such as access to technology, learning environments, and adaptability to remote instruction. There is a gap in research on the long-term impact of the pandemic on EGAP performance across disciplines. The novelty of this study is its use of CAR to understand the ongoing effects and adaptive strategies in EGAP education. This research sheds light on the challenges students faced during and after the pandemic, the effectiveness of remote learning methods, and provides insights for educational policymakers and practitioners.

Abstract

ABSTRACTResearch on the use of digital technology in English-speaking practice has been widely acknowledged in the literature, including empirical studies on the use of vlogging as a mediated instruction in teaching speaking skills. This study aimed to investigate Indonesian EFL students' experiences when conducting a food vlog learning project in English-speaking practices. Fifty students in the Education Department at the State University of Makassar, Indonesia, took part in this study. In their English classes, they worked on the food vlog as a project-based learning (PBL) activity. Random sampling was used to choose five people from each of the five groups of ten people, and they agreed to take part in a semi-structured interview. A thematic analysis was used to look at the qualitative data from the interview. The results indicate that the food vlog group, as part of PBL, helped and enhanced the students' self-efficacy, vocabulary mastery, learning autonomy, technology skills, and confidence in speaking English in EFL classes. These findings suggest that PBL has practical application within the context of the food vlog project. Consequently, utilizing a food vlog as a learning activity can be an effective support in practicing their English-speaking skills beyond the confines of the classroom.ABSTRAKPenelitian tentang penggunaan teknologi digital dalam praktik berbahasa Inggris telah diakui secara luas dalam literatur, termasuk studi empiris tentang penggunaan vlogging sebagai instruksi mediasi dalam pengajaran keterampilan berbicara. How to Cite: Yusuf, Y., Aras, L., Faisal, M., & Ali, A. Abstract

ABSTRACT     This study aimed to develop an English for Tourism (EFT) digital module oriented to the local wisdom values of Magelang. This study was part of a research and development study employing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. Beginning with a need analysis phase using a questionnaire, the researchers found students' needs of 10 (ten) relevant language functions that will help them communicate effectively in the tourism industry. These topics were developed into a flipbook by inserting Magelang's wisdom values. To test its feasibility, the researchers conducted an expert judgment procedure by inviting two experts in the field of EFT and media development. The results showed that the Flipbook was feasible to be used with a mean score of more than three for each criterion of a quality module determined by the Education, Curriculum, and Assessment Standards Agency of Indonesia. In addition, following the expert's suggestions, the researchers added a section developed to enrich the student's vocabulary. This study presents the significance of developing learning materials that integrate local values to build students' noble character.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan modul digital English for Tourism (EFT) yang berorientasi pada nilai-nilai kearifan lokal Magelang. Abstract

Previously, educators created a multiage classroom to address the growing age gap within a class and the unresolved issue of teacher shortage. However, some schools in specific countries currently use this system, which provides significant benefits and positive developments to their fall-behind students or classes. This study conducted peer tutoring to address speaking issues in the classroom and bridge the gap in students' basic English knowledge. Besides, it is eager to improve students' speaking skills in a multiage EFL classroom and enrich literature in non-formal education. This study used McNiff and Whitehead's (2006) theory cycle for classroom action research: observation, reflection, action, evaluation, and modification. Data were collected through tests and interviews, and then the questionnaire was added and analysed using the NVivo 12 Pro application. The finding revealed that peer tutoring improved the multiage students' speaking proficiency in their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In a non-academic setting, peer tutoring effectively boosted the students' self-confidence and collaboration and demonstrated grade-level skills or accelerated learning in the class.
