Abstract

A translation analysis of Russian material culture-specific items (CSIs) found in Chekhov's collection of short stories into Indonesian AbstractThis research aimed to describe material culture-specific items (CSIs) found in the Russian collection of short stories and its Indonesian translation, translation strategies and techniques used to translate the material CSIs. Abstract

This research aims to disclose the influence of the Korean wave toward the Indonesian beauty standards reflected in the skincare advertisements. A descriptive qualitative method with the approach of critical discourse analysis is employed to obtain the research objective. The media are Viva moisturizer advertisement appeared in the early 2000s, Wardah White Treatment Essence advertisement published in 2019, and Laneige BB Cushion Korean advertisement as a part of intertextuality. The 19 year-publication gaps is deliberately presented to show how the shift of beauty myth takes place. The data taken were in words, phrases, and sentences, which were then analyzed using Fairclough's three-dimensional approach. The results showed that Viva attracted consumers' attention using similes, simple present tense, keywords repetition, and positive adjectives. On the other side, Wardah used hyperbole, possessive pronoun, and scientific terminology to convince the consumers of their product's superiority, in line with Laneige's advertisement. Regarding the discursive features, these three advertisements were similar in that they used logos, flattery, puffery, and positive image representation. Lastly, the analysis of social practice indicated that the influence of the Korean wave was clearly seen on Wardah's commercial, which portrayed beauty as Laneige did. They tried shaping consumers' beliefs that beauty means having a white, flawless, and glowing face. Thus, the beauty myth had changed from the previous era. This resembles Bourdieu's notion of field, capital, and Doxa.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out significant differences on the writing achievement between students taught through Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and those who are not. This research is quasi-experimental research. The subjects consisted of two groups of students as the experimental groups and one group as the control group. The data were obtained by essay writing tests. The data analysis used descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. The hypothesis was tested using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) at the significance level of 0.05. The result of the ANCOVA in the posttest score shows that the significance value is 0.001, which is less than the significance level of 0.05 (F = 7.493, p < 0.05). This means that there is a significant difference in the writing ability among grade eight students of SMP N 2 Kalasan taught by using the Project-Based Learning, from those taught using the Problem-Based Learning and those who are not.

Abstract

Native or non-native English-speaking academics are compelled to write scientific articles in internationally reputable indexed journals today. With high demand of academic English, more and more articles are rejected by the editorial board for various reasons, mainly in the cohesion and coherence of their writing. This research seeks to map the types and patterns of cohesive device used to support the coherence of scientific articles. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study compared the use of cohesion devices (CD) by both groups' writing (native & non-native) to further bridge the difficulties faced by non-native writers in shaping their academic writing cohesively and coherently. This study may also serve as a needs analysis that allows for the creation of models, materials, and teaching approaches to scientific article writing for learners of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

Most students view the movie as entertainment so they cannot enhance their English learning. In fact, the movie can be one of the effective visual literacy media to learn English. Thus, this research is aimed to investigate students' perception of the visual of the movie as visual-literacy media to support English language learning. The respondents were chosen through the purposive sampling technique. These respondents who have an interest in movies and have their basis in English language skill were chosen by the researcher. This research then was carried out at Universitas Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta. This research is conducted in a qualitative method in an informal setting. The result of this research is that the visual movie mostly in the process may boost student's affection rather than their cognitive so it does not quite support the actual language learning process. Moreover, this research is concluded that the use of movie may prefer entertainment daily. In terms of education, it may be different as the educator should highlight some instructions or topics first before the movie that is used for learning media is played. Furthermore, it is subjective to see student's perceptions even public toward the movie itself, whether it is only for entertainment or it could be appropriate for education as one of the visual literacy media.
