Abstract

The aim of this research is to know if there are effects of teaching method and vocabulary mastery on student’s speaking skill at private senior high schools in Teluk Betung, Bandar Lampung. The sample of this research is 60 students. This research is experimental research with two factors, teaching method using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and Conventional Method and Vocabulary Mastery. The data about vocabulary mastery and speaking skills are taken through tests which their validity and reliability have been tested. The researcher used SPSS Program 20 to analyze the data. The results are: experimental class (A1) has to mean score 68, it is more than a control class (A2) that has to mean score 59,97. Testing of three hypotheses used ANOVA (analysis on variants), it has got a sig. score 0,000 in communicative language teaching and vocabulary mastery got sig 0,002. It means the first hypothesis, there is a significant effect of CLT on students’ speaking skill is accepted. The second hypothesis, there is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on students’ speaking skill is also accepted. While the third hypothesis, there are the effects of teaching method using CLT and vocabulary mastery on students’ speaking skill is rejected.

Abstract

 This article examines the use of politeness principle in cartoon movie entitled “Stand By Me Doraemon”. It aims at giving a description on the use of politeness principle in this movie so that this is the source of data as well. The data are collected by note taking technique and then analyzed descriptively. After analyzing the data, the researcher finds the use of politeness principle in the movie script. They are utterances of the use of politeness principle covering the kinds of maxim in politeness principle. The utterances covey the use of tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. Then, it focused also in politeness scale such as formality scale, hesitancy scale, and equality scale. The finding result showed that there are 25 politeness principle found in cartoon movie “Stand By Me Doraemon”. 1 tact maxim, 3 generosity maxim, 6 approbation maxim, 1 modesty maxim, 2 agreement maxim, 3 sympathy maxim, 2 formality scale, 4 hesitancy scale, and 3 equality scale. Approbation maxim is the maxim of the most numerous in the movie. This is because the characters in this film seek to avoid conflict and create an environment that is comfortable in communication.

Abstract

This research is intended to find out the total number of meanings and the translation rank shift. This study is a qualitative research. This research is also descriptive research and fact finding. The research object of this study is concrete noun translation and the data are taken from books, electronic devices and internet. The writer uses noting technique to collect the data. To analyze the data, the writer conducts three steps in this research; they are presenting the data, analyzing the data and finding the result of the research.  The result of this study shows that there are three groups of translation meanings; nouns which have one meaning, two meanings and more than two meanings. The translation rank shift is classified into two kinds, the upward rank shift and the downward rank shift. The most frequent type of rank shift is upward rank shift.

Abstract

Abstract:Listening is one of the fundamental language skills.Based on the pre survey research, many students at Senior High School were not interested in listening course.This research tried to develop podcast of English song (PES) as the media in order to help the teacher in the teaching of listening and make the students interested in listening course. The type of the reseacher is developmental research.The steps of this research are self evaluation, expert review and one-to-one, small group, and field test. The subjects of this research are the students of SMAN 03 Metro and SMK Muhammadiyah 03 Metro. The researcher collected the data by giving some questionnaires to the expert review and students to find out whether the media is applicable and suitable or not. The result showed that: first, most of the studentsfelt fun and enjoyable in the learning process of listening course. Second, PES media was applicable, the students were active, very enthusiastic, excited with PES media. Key Words: English song, Listening media, Podcast.

Abstract

This study discusses the effects of inductive and deductive approaches in teaching writing to students' understanding and learning achievements at the 2011 Academic Year Muhammaadiyah University of Metro. This approach is like the teacher centered learning model, a student-centered learning model (Students Centered Approach). To illustrate the effects of this approach, researchers conducted research with the Lesson Study approach in which the inductive and deductive approaches were applied sequentially and separately. There are 44 UM Metro semester III students who are taken as the research subjects. They experienced the teaching and learning process in two cycles: the first cycle with an inductive approach and the second cycle with a deductive approach. The purpose of this research is to describe and explore how deep the effects of the inductive and deductive approaches are. The results showed that the deductive approach proved to be more effective and had a positive effect on the comprehension of students' understanding in the writing subject 2 with a ratio of 23.8% positive for the inductive approach and 58.2% positive for the deductive approach. It implies that the deductive approach mainly occupy the mindset of the Indonesian EFL students.

Abstract

This research entitled “The Personality of the Main Character as Reflected in Paulo Coelho’s The Devil and Miss Prym” is intended to find out the personality of the main character and factors that influence the personality of the main character. This research uses descriptive qualitative method since the researcher does not apply any quantitative analysis or statistical procedures. The researcher uses the novel entitled The Devil and Miss Prym as the data source of the research. The methods used in collecting the data are observation and documentation. In observation method, the researcher reads the chosen object critically, and then identifies the psychological conflicts. After reading and identifying, the researcher collects and writes all data supporting the research. While in the documentation method, the researcher uses some related books and other documents collected from internet to support this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive qualitative method. He uses the descriptive qualitative method to collect the data and analyzes it by using Sigmund Freud’s personality theory. The result shows that the personality of the main character is influenced by internal and external factors. The internal factor consists of heredity features relating to physic, psychological features relating to physical state, and the heredity features of the character. The external factor consists of some part of life like family, environment, and job.

Abstract

There is a notion that teachers are one of important factors which motivate students to learn English. The present study aims to investigate students’ motivation in learning English with Native English Speaking Teachers (NEST) and Non-native English Speaking Teachers (NNEST) and whether the students are more motivated to learn English with NEST or NNEST. Furthermore, this study examines students’ preferences regarding NEST and NNEST. To obtain the findings, mixed method research was conducted. A set of questionnaires were distributed to thirty students in a private junior high school in Bekasi, Indonesia whereas semi-structured interviews were conducted to two students of same school. The findings show that teacher is an influential factor that motivates students to learn English. Although the respondents are more motivated to learn English from NEST, they do not have certain preferences regarding NEST and NNEST as both teachers help the respondents to learn English in different ways. The findings reveal that NEST are considered better in vocabulary teaching while NNEST teach grammar better.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative research with two variables. The classroom action research is conducted at phisics study program of Muhammadiyah University of Metro. The subject of this research is first semester students of physics study program. The number of the students is 22. The objective of this research was to know how cue cards technique improve the students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The researcher choose one class because they have problem in writing ability. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected from test (pre test and post test), observation. The result of this research can be seen from the average score of pre test (before treatment) was 61,86, in cycle 1 was 70,90 and in post test cycle 2 was 78. That was involved in upgrading maximally. It implied that cue cards technique can improve the students writing ability in descriptive text. In other words, the class had fulfilled criteria success of standard students competency from the school.It was supported by the observation of the students. From the result of the discussion, the researcher concludes that in this research there is an improvement student writing ability in descriptive text using cue cards technique at the students of physics academic year 2015/2016.Key Words : Descriptive Text, Writing Ability, Cue Cards Technique

Abstract

A language is an important tool in communication. To produce a smooth relationship between countries that have different languages, the English language functions as Lingua Franca. To understand the information in English, a good understanding is needed. Being able to translate English texts is one of the basic forms of understanding itself. Unfortunately, numerous English language learners; from junior high schools to university levels, are still experiencing problems in this translation. This study aims to uncover the strategies of students in translating English texts into Indonesian by using the Thinking Aloud Protocol method. The subjects of this study were students in semester V (five) who had gone through Structure I to Structure IV subjects. This research was conducted in the scope of the University of Muhammadiyah Palu. From this research, the most widely used translation strategy is done by students as well as the prototype of the translation process to produce good translations

Abstract

The title of this study is, “An Analysis of Figurative Languages Used in Paulo Coelho’s novel Entitled “The Alchemist”. The objectives of the study are to describe the types of the figurative language found in the book and to identify the contextual meaning of the figurative language. The method used in collecting the data related to the subject of this research is documentation method because the researcher collected the data from novel. This study was conducted by collecting any relevant data and information about the topic or problem of the study from novels and internet that are available for the analysis. The data collection used the following steps: reading the novel, and then selecting the data that used the types of figurative language. While the steps to analyze the data are identifying the types of figurative language according to Leech, identifying the contextual meaning of the figurative language, and the last is interpreting the data.The result shows that there are 70 sentences that have figurative language. From all the sentences, there are 30 items or 42.9% of simile, 27 items or 38.6% of personification, 12 items or 17.1% of metaphor, and 1 item or 1.4% of hyperbole. It can be indicated that the dominant type of figurative language in the novel is simile. The author uses simile to explain circumstances, to describe the characters, to express emotion of the characters, and to make his writing more vivid and entertaining. It can be concluded that figurative language has important roles in this novel. That‘s why the author used so many sentences that have figurative language in this novel. Using figurative language makes the novel more interesting to read, and helps the readers to imagine the story, the character based on the illustration that the author has already given in the story.
