Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) refers to a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects communication, behaviour and socialization of the individuals diagnosed with ASD. In children, ASD is considered as a high incidence disability since it affects one in eight children. In regard to functional communication skills of the children, effective augmentative or alternative communication process and device is highly important to facilitate positive outcomes. Both Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the iPad with its communication applications are considered emerging treatment children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The purpose of this literature review is to compare the effectiveness of low tech intervention (through the utilization of PECS) and high tech intervention (through the utisation of iPad). The study was conducted by selecting electronic articles from several databases which were published between 2008-2018. The findings show that PECS is highly effective for increasing intentional communication skills and independence in requesting and making decisions as well as beneficial for non-English speakers. Meanwhile, iPad-based intervention is beneficial to solve children's literacy problems, to reduce stressors during interventions, and to increase the children's effective intra-verbal responses. It is then suggested that teachers, parents and care givers employ the combination of both low tech and high tech interventions as combining the two will lead to better outcomes.

Abstract

The study investigated the level of attitudes towards the education of students with learning disabilities among teachers in regular education classrooms. It also examined the influence of four teachers' demographic factors on their attitudes towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular classrooms Ibadan, Nigeria. The descriptive research design was adopted for the study whilst the multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted to select the study sample. A total of 125 teachers participated in the study, 64 (51.2%) were males whilst 61 (48.8%) were females. A self-designed questionnaire tagged Teachers' Attitude towards Education of Students with Learning Disabilities in Regular Education Classrooms (TAESLDRECQ) with a reliability of 0. 81 was utilized to collect data. One research question and four hypotheses were generated and tested. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics were employed to analyze the data generated from the participants at 0.05 level of significance. Whilst the result of the research question reveals a grand mean of 2.59 which is slightly higher than the criterion mean of 2.50, the result from the test of norm showed that 9.6% (n=12) teachers had negative attitude, whilst 90.4% (n=113) teachers had positive attitude. Therefore, it was concluded that there is a positive attitude towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms. The results shows that teachers' attitudes towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms based on: gender (Crit-t = 1.96, Cal.t = 1.440, DF = 123; educational qualification (F = 1.630, p(.171)>.05); years of experience (F = 2.329, p(.102)>.05); and category of students taught which could be either junior secondary or senior secondary class (Crit-t = 1.96, Cal.t = .035, DF = 123, p(0.973) towards education of students with learning disabilities in regular education classrooms. Hence, it was concluded that teachers' attitude towards education of students with learning disabilities is the same irrespective of their gender, educational qualification, years of experience and category of student taught (either junior secondary or senior secondary class). On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that there should be more trainings and in-service professional development programmes such as orientation, workshops, seminars, conferences to allow teachers in regular education classrooms to acquire knowledge, skills and values required for the adequate education of students with learning disabilities in their classrooms.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative study aims to explore the main physical and social barriers to accessibility of religious sites, services, and activities for people with physical disabilities in Indonesia and subsequently aims to explore possibilities to enhance their religious participation. A total of 28 interviewees participated in this research i.e., 16 self-indicated as Muslims and 12 as Christians. Among the male participants (n=16) were 10 Muslims and 6 Catholics, and among the female participants (n=12) were 6 Muslims and 6 Christians. Interviews and physical audits suggest serious need for improvements in accessibility and accommodation going to and within the establishment. Although majority of disabled persons interviewed for this study regularly participate in religious activities, they also notice that their basic needs and concerns are not being treated as priorities. Discourse on disability issues should be initiated and developed to create inclusive religious atmosphere.

Abstract

Disabled student learns based on 2013 curriculum in an inclusive school. This student learns the same material with regular students. To help disabled student understands the material, the teacher should use an appropriate teaching strategy. Differentiated instruction is a teaching strategy of providing different options for students. It has 4 terms namely content, process, product, and learning environment. This study aimed at investigating the implementation of English teacher's differentiated instruction to disabled student in an inclusive school. This study was a qualitative research which employs a case study research design. The study was conducted in MM2 (Multi Media) class at SMKN 3 Singaraja as an inclusive school. The subject was an English teacher who already attended some workshops to teach disabled student. The data were gathered by observation and interview. The results showed that the English teacher differentiated the topics of the text, examples, sources, and the ways of explaining and reviewing the material in term of content. The teacher also gave pre-assessment to determine the topic for students' video. In term of process, the teacher sometimes differentiated the choices and instructions for disabled student and regular students. The teacher did not differentiate the product made by disabled student and regular students but sometimes differentiated the challenge, the topic, and the criteria. In term of learning environment, the teacher usually provided enough space, arranged the seatmate and seat for disabled student than regular students. She gave different rules or instructions depending on where the learning took place.

Abstract

Website in higher education utilized for many purposes such as providing learning resources, information, and news related to student's academic needs. For this purpose, university websites must be accessible for all users including students with disabilities. This article describes a study conducted to evaluate the accessibility of university websites for people with disabilities in Indonesia. The accessibility evaluation focused on compliance with the most recent international standards provides by The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) called WCAG 2.0. A quantitative research would be utilized in this study using website accessibility online evaluation tools namely, Achecker. This study comprises the analysis of accessibility of 20 websites from top-ranked universities in Indonesia based on webometrics ranking. The result of this study showed that 95% of the university websites examined carried problems in conformity with WCAG 2.0 Level AAA.

Abstract

It is not easy for mothers living in rural areas to raise children with special needs because various obstacles arise from both within and outside the family. This study aimed to explore various obstacles for mothers in raising children with special needs, especially in rural areas. The research design used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The sample in this study consisted of 55 mothers who were selected using purposive sampling method. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured face-to-face interviews and through focus group discussions. The data collected in this study was then analyzed using thematic analysis. There are 3 themes generated in this research including 1) family perception, 2) financials, and 3) access to health care services. Information obtained from this research can provide solutions for families to overcome or get out from the existing barriers and provide information to the government to provide health services to families with children with special needs in rural areas.

Abstract

Online game problems being a global concern because of the risk of having a negative impact in school-age children. Game online addiction is the excessive use of computers or video games due to urges that cause social or emotional problems. This research aims to identify the relationship between online game problems and learning achievement in senior high school students in Jakarta. This research is a quantitative study with a Cross-Sectional approach. The sampling method uses a technique of purposive sampling. The number of respondents in this study was 95 senior high school students at x public school, Central of Jakarta. The result of the bivariate analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between online gaming problems and learning achievement of a high school students in Jakarta (p-value = 0.242). The implication of this research shows that online gaming problems are not the only factor that can affect the learning achievement of high school children. The other factors that are likely to influence children's learning achievement include self-motivation, family social support, and the school social environment. Recommendation for parents to supervise their children in using gadgets and the school can strengthen the rules for using gadgets in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the organizational climate change process in Mandiri Contact Center (MCC) Yogyakarta which employs people with disabilities since the implementation of the Mandiri Kriya Difabel Program. A qualitative method with an instrumental case study approach is used in this study. To collect the data, the researcher uses interview, observation and documentation study technique. The results show that by implementing an inclusive human resource management, the Mandiri Kriya Difabel Program has succeeded to change an exclusive organizational climate into an inclusive disability organizational climate. This is the first study which combines Lewin's Three Step Change Model, Social Model of Disability, and Inclusive Dimensions on Organizational Climate as a framework to research a disability inclusive organizational climate change. This research provides an inclusive method to manage employees with disabilities and a new academic reference on organizational change study.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex intellectual and developmental disability clinically diagnosed when s/he is 2 or three years old. These children demand special care to meet their special needs to enable optimized potentials in their development. This qualitative study aims at understanding the stressors affecting the quality of life of the primary care-giver. Parenting for children with ASD is usually more complicated and demanding than for children without disabilities. Four case studies were selected to represent typical mothers of ASD children in different phases of development. Their ages ranged from 29-50 years old and the ages of their children were 6 to 22 years old. Research credibility is constructed through interviews with significant others and observation of social media activities. The instrument for the study is WHO-QoL-BREF which is adjusted for an interview protocol. The results indicated that mothers who were not supported by their spouse and family members often had to deal with the uncertain future alone. Those who felt accomplished in caring for their children were strengthened by the parenting experiences. Support from professionals is crucial for mothers in addition to support from significant others and peers, in maintaining their quality of life.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the efforts of teachers to improve teacher pedagogical competence in the learning of children with special needs in the inclusive city of Surakarta. The subjects of this study were a class teacher and a subject teacher in ten inclusive schools in the city of Surakarta. This study uses a qualitative case study method, with data collection using interview techniques from aspects of pedadogic competencies and documents of children with special needs as individual teaching programs then technical data analysis using descriptive analysis. The results of this study that based on teaching experience and educational background, teachers still need to increase efforts to improve pedagogical competence in the learning of children with special needs in inclusive schools
