Abstract

The development in construction industry in recent times show the tendency of segregation in industrialization process. This research observes the segregation phenomenon of  innovation adoption on small scale construction project as like as segregation phenomenon of construction industry at common. Case study in this research is Musholatorium, which is an abbreviation of Mushola (prayer room) with planetarium, in Lembang Bandung. The innovation on this research was the geodesic dome structure as a Musholatorium. The method used in this research consisted of: (a) describing the project and (b) analysis. The project process consisted of (a) initiation, (b) architectural design, (c) component design, and (d) component fabrication and construction. From the analysis, it could be suggested that there are inefficiencies of knowledge distribution during the project process since the knowledge was transferred without sufficient collaboration. Only the owner involved during the whole process and could actually conclude the whole to develop the innovation. The nature of construction project, which usually be segmented, caused the inter-discipline aspect hard to be communicated between actors. In order to introduce innovation into building construction project, it is important for the actors to involve and collaborate inside the projects as a collective works.

Abstract

People who live in urban areas tend to have a higher stress level than those who live in rural areas. Level of stress can be prevented and diminished through the establishment of urban relaxation spaces within the city. Urban city planning needs to consider citizens’ preferences as potential users to obtain the maximum result. This study aims to determine the characteristics of preferred urban relaxation spaces within the city. The research was conducted through a grounded theory approach and exploratory qualitative method. Data collection was carried out based on the open-ended online survey questionnaire with a non-random sampling technique. Data was then analyzed by content analysis in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The finding shows that there are six aspects of preferred urban relaxation spaces: the sense of nature, facilities, tranquility, ambience, accessibility, and quality of space. Research is expected to explore new potentials in urban planning in accordance with the characteristics of its citizens.

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelago country with a sea larger than the mainland, so it is undeniable that in Indonesia there are many fisherman settlements. Often fishermen settlements in Indonesia are marginalized in the development of maritime and service industries and even become victims of the activities of the utilization of coastal areas by the private sector engaged in tourism, industry, and services. The fisherman settlement community is not getting a positive impact from the development, therefore this study aims so that the fisherman settlement community can get a positive impact from the development of the surrounding area. This research takes a case study in the fisherman settlements of Kingking and Karangsari in Tuban Regency, East Java. The approach used in this research is the urban assemblage approach to reveal socio-cultural knits as a cultural force that shapes the sustainability of the place. The urban assemblage approach will be supported by search methods which will then be analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The search was carried out through literature review and field surveys. This research presents the results in the form of a mapping of knits between culture, social, the economy as the cultural strength of the Kingking and Karangsari fisherman settlements with the surrounding tourist areas. The results of this study can be considered by the government and local communities in planning the development of coastal areas or fisherman settlements into tourist destinations.

Abstract

Urbanization is increasing the need for and building sites and vertical housing. Changes in residential typology cause changes in housing preferences and meanings. This study aims to reveal the dimensions of residential meanings — the study conducted in two stages with a sequential mix-method. The first stage is qualitative research using an explorative grounded theory approach. The categories and variables identified in the first stage of the research are used in the second phase of research quantitatively using the correlational research approach. The data collected were analyzed by factor analysis to reveal the dimensions of residential meaning — the dimensions of the revealed mapping distinguished by the type of occupancy, namely site, and vertical dwelling. The vertical house tends to be perceived as having more social and physiological significance, personalization, tranquility, hiding, economy, and self-actualization than site occupancy.

Abstract

The declining quality of the environment lately requires a change in human’s environmental value and behavior. This change can be achieved through environmental education in schools. Indonesia has recently promoted the Adiwiyata school program to encourage environmental education. This study aims to reveal the dimensions of value (NEP) and behavior (GEB) that occur in students at Adiwiyata school and explain the relationship between the two to evaluate the extent to which Adiwiyata's concepts can interfere with students' thought patterns and behavior. Through principal component analysis and factor analysis, six dimensions of student’s NEP were found in Adiwiyata Elementary School, respectively: "Destructive Interventions", "Conservative Interventions", "Exploitation of Nature", "Environmental Education", "Sustainable Environments", and "Environmental Insights". Besides, four dimensions of student’s GEB were found at Adiwiyata Elementary School, respectively: "Pro-Environmental Attitudes (Individual)", "Pro-Environmental Attitudes (Group)", "Waste of Natural Resources & Energy", and "Efficiency of Natural Resources & Energy". Furthermore, correlation analysis shows that these values and behavior tend to only be realized in the school environment.

Abstract

The use of atrium in hospital buildings accelerating the patient's healing process and reduce the impression of stress on hospital buildings. However, the presence of the atrium can also pose a fire hazard because it can be a means of spreading smoke quickly. This study determines the effect of atriums in hospital buildings on the level of life safety in the event of a fire. The study was conducted at two hospitals in Bandung and Jakarta, Indonesia. The level of life safety is assessed through the difference between the time needed for the evacuation, referred to as RSET, and the time taken by smoke to cause a critical condition for occupants, called ASET, where RSET must be shorter than ASET. The analysis carried out on two physical configurations: open and closed atrium, and the results of this study showed that with an open atrium, the smoke quickly covered the evacuation route before the evacuation process completed, or ASET<RSET. The fire room door must be closed, and the smoke-barrier must be installed around the atrium to prevent the spread of smoke into patient rooms, thus fulfill the ASET<RSET criteria.

Abstract

Saga Village, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara has a traditional house that becomes its identity, namely Sa’o. Unlike ordinary traditional houses, Sa’o has a customary leader in each house. Thus, the house is not just a place to live but also shows the social hierarchy. Visually, the floor plan is a square with a very steep roof angle so that the roof is visible. The philosophy follows the analogy of the human body, that is, lewu (pedestal/ foot), one (wall/ body), gara (roof/ head). On the macro scale, the Saga settlement pattern follows the contour pattern. There are about 20 houses with the same typology. The use of space in cultural activities is not yet identified. Besides, the position of the contoured landscape without shade and surrounded by forests has a vulnerability to several diseases. The link between space use and environmental health also has not yet been explained. Continuing from previous research on space cosmology, the micro aspect in this study deals with the physical identification of traditional houses. In contrast, in the macro aspect, it discusses the use of space for cultural activities and aspects of environmental health. The data collection was carried out through focus group discussions (FGD) and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The results of this study are descriptions of spaces used for cultural activities at a particular time and place as well as efforts to improve public environmental health. In conclusion, Saga people have local wisdom in terms of traditional architecture, in addition to the intangible form of inherited traditions and efforts to improve environmental health.
