Abstract

Environment (external factors) and user attributes (internal factors) affect the user's response to the environment. This study aims to uncover how the quality of the environment in high school as an external factor and student motivation as an internal factor affects the academic performance of the students. The research was conducted with qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were collected by survey using an online questionnaire. From the regression analysis, it was found that the dimensions of external factors of "classroom order", "social interaction and supervision" and "air quality" further increased the effectiveness of student learning rather than internal dimensions of "resilience and capacity building". Meanwhile, the decrease in air quality, noise, and environmental pollution can cause student learning disruption. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the learning environment plays an important role in shaping the effectiveness of student learning.

Abstract

Kalijodo has a long history in terms of gambling, prostitution, human trafficking and other illicit activities. Although it is a green belt area, the location had always being filled with semipermanent buildings. The area was changed its meaning in 2016 when the late Governor of Ahok with the help of the police and army, eradicated these housing and transformed this place as the community center (RPTRA-Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak). Together with Yori Antar, Basuki changed Kalijodo into a new center for Jakarta with its mural and skatepark. Former illicit users have been pushed out from the site. Some built a temporary shelter under the highway bridge while others went to their villages. After the fall of Basuki due to the blasphemy crime, the image of RPTRA Kalijodo was contested. Within a day, the area was filled with illegal parking and prostitution returned in different forms taking place under the highway bridge. Layers of meaning and use of Kalijodo transforms rapidly and in results changes the image of the city. Through observation, interviews and archival research, this paper analyses the contestation of the city image by investigating the relationship between the top-down approach and the everyday life uses of space.

Abstract

The presence of subcultures in urban society is as a result of the heterogeneity of culture. One of subculture that presence in Bandung city is a motorcycle club which can be found in almost every corner of the Bandung city, especially in public spaces. This study was conducted to identify the phenomenon of the process of motorcycle club subculture occupy space in public open space under flyover in Bandung city. Data was collected by observation and interview members of the subculture as a subject of the research. The result showed that the main motive for using public open space under flyover is the desire for self-existence that cannot be accommodated in public space that already exists. Utilization of the space under flyover by the motorcycle club gives new meaning to the space that originally did not have a function in urban spatial. However they also do legitimacy of power over space by said that “the space is theirs”. Therefore architects and planners should consider subculture as a part of the society that have the same right to access public open space and do their activities in Bandung City.

Abstract

Various competitiveness reports on tourism have ranked Japan as one of the most visited countries in Asia. Along with South Korea and Singapore, Japan offers many unique traits to the tourists. Since the establishment of “Kihinkai” (lit. Welcome Society), Japan’s first organization to engage with foreign tourists, the country has succeeded in developing various sector of tourism such as heritage sites, nature-based tourism, religious sites, and urban tourism. Tokyo Metropolis, as the capital of Japan, is one of the best examples in urban tourism sector. Hotel occupancy in Tokyo has risen around 80% in the last decade, showing high growth of tourism in the city. The aforementioned growth is supported by many factors, with one of them being the enhancement of tourist attractions. The paper examines Tokyo’s nine most famous tourist attractions specifically at their spatial aspects. The complexity of place, accessibility and the presence of surrounding amenities, as well as the ambience or atmosphere offered by the attractions are the components analyzed to form a set of characteristics that define the character of Tokyo’s tourist attractions. The compiled data can be a precedent study or preliminary guideline for other big cities in Japan or Asia to develop their potential of urban tourism.

Abstract

The Braga area is one of the cultural heritage tourist destinations in Bandung with the attraction of its colonial architecture. The emergence of new buildings in the region is presented without giving attention to the surrounding colonial buildings. The visitor’s perspective on the Braga area is an important basis in regional growth and development. This study aims to find the perspective of visitors based on the correlation between their attraction and expectations of the Braga region. The method used in this study was mixed methods (qualitative-quantitative), and data collection was carried out using a survey through a freely distributed online questionnaire (snowball non-random sampling). The collected data is then analyzed qualitatively using content analysis and quantitatively using principal component analysis, factor analysis, and multivariate correlation analysis. The results of the study revealed the existence of two perspectives, namely appreciative and recreational. The appreciative perspective sees Braga as having an attractive heritage of historical buildings and hopes that Braga will become a conservation area. While the recreational perspective regards Braga as an entertainment area that is unique and hopes for the commodification of the Braga area.

Abstract

The provision of urban green areas, especially urban parks, has been decreasing as higher demand for public facilities in the city. Urban parks, however, provide many benefits for surrounding residents that require effort to sustain them. The current study wants to identify how grouping (typology) of urban parks was based on visitor’s attitudes toward urban parks (sense of place). The data were collected online from the questionnaire, and the data of 211 respondents were collected. The data were then processed quantitatively by open coding, axial coding, and selective coding analyses. The result shows that there were two groups of urban parks based on visitor’s attitudes; they are restorative parks and forest parks. The restorative park can provide restoration benefits for daily visitors, while forest parks can provide not only restoration effects but also visitor’s hobby activities. Based on the duration of the visit to those parks, the level of visitor’s sense of place in the forest park is higher than in the restorative park. The role of the architect and urban planner is needed to design urban parks that can develop visitor’s sense of place, such as providing a place for attraction, physical activity, walking, photography, relaxation, and enjoy the atmosphere.

Abstract

Kampung is one type of living space in a city with distinctive characteristics. Yogyakarta is one of the cities in Indonesia which still has a village as part of its inhabitant' living space, one of them is a riverbank kampung. The existence of a riverbank creates a unique physical setting in the kampung, which indirectly affects the creation of inhabitant interaction space. The uniqueness and limitations of the space become interesting to be observed further as a basis for understanding local wisdom in planning future village spaces. This study uses an exploratory method, which was carried out by field observations to collect data with case studies in Kampung Gampingan on Winongo riverbank. This study aimed to determine the variations in the physical settings of space used by residents to interact in the riverbank kampung. The results of this study found several characteristics of physical settings of kampung that affect citizens in conducting interactions, as the combination of the enclosure and spatial elements for a variety of community activities. These results are expected to be used as a reference in conducting the arrangement of Kampung Gampingan as one of the slums in the city of Yogyakarta in the future that is accommodating to the characteristics of the setting of interaction spaces of its citizens.

Abstract

A glass facade is commonly used by modern building nowadays, even in the tropical area with its characteristic. Thus, buildings often face a problem with thermal comfort. Passive design strategy supposed to be considered by the architect in order to avoid inconvenience with the heat. This strategy utilized the architectural element as the tools to reach the comfort level. The aim of this study was to optimize the thermal behavior of the building itself by the modification of solar shading types and materials. EnergyPlus was used as a simulation tool in this study. The results show that solar gain exterior window can be reduced by 52,73% by using concrete louvre and wood louvre.
