Abstract

Vernacular buildings in Indonesia, especially vernacular buildings of East Java, are increasingly diminishing. Many efforts have been made to maintain the existence of vernacular buildings, one of which is ex-situ conservation by re-using it adaptively as a tourist destination as found in Kampoeng Djawi Wonosalam. Translocation of vernacular buildings to new locations and new function causes changes in vernacular buildings, particularly in its structure. Changes occur as an adaption to new locations and new activities that will be accommodated. The objective of this paper is to describe the structural changes in vernacular buildings as the result of translocation. Qualitative descriptive method is used to find the structural changes, so the results obtained are actual facts. Changes that occur then analyzed with the concept of adaptive exoskeleton building. According to the results of observations and analysis, changes that occur in vernacular building translocation are caused by resilience, safety, and visual factors, as well as fulfillment of new activities.

Abstract

Physical and non-physical changes that occur in the new building of the ex-Tjolomadoe Sugar Factory is one of the concrete evidences of conservation that implementing adaptive reuse approach in saving this 157-year-old factory construction. Once, this building actively serves as a sugar factory for many decades and then was abandoned for 20 years. Until in 2017, it was revitalized by changing its function from the factory to a cultural center and commercial area, then changed its name to “De Tjolomadoe”. This study aims to assess the authenticity of De Tjolomadoe by using the Nara Grid instrument. The research itself runs by combining qualitative and quantitative method with observations, strengthened by interviews and capturing opinions through questionnaire on various groups of people ranging from the layman to the experts. The result then has analyzed into the Nara grid table. It show that the authenticity of the building is still maintained. There are some changes especially in the interior to accomodate new functions, but does not eliminate the spatial form. The building structure also has strengthened and the addition of architectural elements and interior ornaments to make it more attractive to visitors.

Abstract

The lifestyle of urban people who prefer shopping in shopping centers rather than traditional markets makes the construction of shopping centers in big cities even bigger. The difference in mall level and the shape of public space offered by the mall are related to visitor behavior. Visitor activities can vary depending on the way they describe the public spaces offered in the mall. This study uses two malls located on Yogyakarta's Adisucipto Road, namely Galeria Mall and Ambarrukmo Plaza. The selection is due to its location on the main road of Yogyakarta. This research aims to study the relationship between the public spaces design and the behavior of visitors at the mall. The method used is descriptive qualitative by recording all activities and designs of public spaces in the mall and analyzing their interrelationships. The results show that Ambarrukmo Plaza and Galeria Mall use a sociopetal space with regulatory spaces that tend to unite individuals to create social interaction. This service is a psychological effect on visitors so that they do not feel alienated in the mall.

Abstract

The existence of injustice and inequality in access to the development results of the city. Slum areas have become one of the problems that exist in urban life. This automatically occurs as a result of a normal process called urbanization and development. Where many residents end up occupying non-residential areas due to their limited access. Seeing from the perspective of the access theory, how people live in the area is a form of their right to be able to utilize natural resources. One of these uses is used as a place to live. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, by taking several samples as a source of interviews. The arrangement of the slum area is now moving to another dimension, which is no longer forced evictions, but how to organize and change the residential area to be habitable. There are several indicators used in seeing a residential area that is said to be unfit for habitation. Upgrading slum areas have been able to change areas that were previously unfit to be better and able to meet indicators of the feasibility of residential areas in general. This step is also how the community continues to strive to gain access to the area. Kampung Jodipan and Kampung Tridi have changed their appearance, and have improved the quality of their living environment, with tidier, cleaner, and more affordable access to public services. Apart from the results of this research, there are still some problems, one of which is the uncertainty of land rights, so that they will not know the future of the area they live in now. The guarantee of land ownership is important to fight for equal rights to state services, state recognition, and the right to live in the area.

Abstract

The existence of landmarks on campus can help students to access campus facilities in supporting formal teaching and learning activities. However, homogeneous planning of landmarks can divert student orientation in accessibility, particularly for freshman. This was partly complained by students such as students of the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. Therefore, it is prominent to identify the process of recognizing landmarks as well as their attributes and meanings that can strengthen the process of forming cognitive maps. The current study aims to determine the cognitive map differences of freshmen freshmen in ITB who have had prior spatial experience (architecture students) (N=18) and students who have not before (N=20). This qualitative research was conducted by distributing questionnaires to compare student cognitive maps. The results showed that architecture students identify fewer landmarks than non-architecture students. However, architecture students have an appropriate cognitive map, so they are likely not to get lost on campus. Meanwhile, the attributes of the landmarks identified are additional accessories; shape; detail/ornamentation; design style; height; composition; location; material/texture; proportion; singularity; scale; and colour. The meanings of landmarks identified are history, memory, structure, sensation, and emotional feeling. This result is expected to be used as references for designing other ITB campus landmarks.

Abstract

In Indonesia, a bamboo slanted ceiling is one of the most commonly used types of ceiling. It occurs for numerous reasons, including technical and cultural aspects. However, practically, it has low durability and is difficult to maintain as it is used in place which is prone to rainwater seepage and installed in the form of large woven sheet material. Therefore, in this research, three alternative models of construction for a bamboo slanted ceiling were proposed: (1) one layer of dense bamboo slats, (2) two layers of dense bamboo slats; and (3) two overlapping layers of sparsely weaved bamboo slats. Each model was developed on a real scale prototype and tested in terms of its material’s temperature and humidity level. The construction strategies used for these models were focused on the arrangement and orientation of pieces of ‘Bambu Kuning’ within the roof structure. The measurement result shows that the third model had the lowest temperature with >5°C different compared to the other models during the hottest hour of the day (from 9 AM to 3 PM). Then, in terms of the humidity measurement, data shows that the second model had the lowest humidity measurement with 1.93% different compared to the first model and 1.22% different compared to the third model. Furthermore, other potential benefits of the proposed models are also presented.

Abstract

Characteristics and history contained in buildings and environments in the city will create an image of the area which was then called as historic area. Kesawan area in Medan City is one of the historical areas and the identity of the city. The current problems are economic interests, modernization, uneven urban development, and improperly enforced laws that threaten the existence of historic areas and buildings. This study aims to reveal the image and expectations of the Kesawan Area from the viewpoint of the people of Medan City, which can be used as a foothold in formulating policies in maintaining its preservation as a historic area. The methods used in this study are mixed methods, namely qualitative and quantitative. The data collection method is done using an online questionnaire with a non-random sample - snowball sampling. Qualitative data analyzed contents. Quantitative data were analyzed by factor analysis and multivariate correlation analysis. From the analysis of images and expectations revealed four perspectives on the Kesawan Area. First, a conservation perspective that hopes that Chinatown's identity in the Kesawan Area is maintained. The two tourism perspectives that have a dominant image of the Kesawan Area tourist attraction and the Kesawan Area hope remain the Medan City icon. The three revitalization perspectives that have the image of the Kesawan Area are difficult to park, crowded during the day, but have a visual appeal, and hope that the Kesawan Region becomes a living area.
