Abstract

This research is an attempt to study gairaigo in Japanese. The study is focused on the formation, meaning, and cultural implication of gairaigo. The data for this study are Japanese loan words borrowed from English taken from NHK Easy Japanese News from May 2021 to October 2021. The research used qualitative and quantitative approaches.  The data are collected by using the non-participant observation method.  The analysis of data is done by using the intralingual equivalent method. The result of the study shows from 32 gairaigo collected from NHK Easy Japanese News, 98% of them are adapted to the Japanese linguistic system in the form of sound insertion and substitution. The formation of gairaigo is done by adjusting linguistic forms of English into Japanese. The formation of gairaigo causes the change in meaning which also implies Japanese culture.  The formation of gairaigo while maintaining the linguistic features of the Japanese language is a sign of the language loyalty of Japanese speakers to their language.

Abstract

This paper uses critical discourse analysis (CDA), particularly Theo Van Leeuwen's socio-semantic inventory, to discover the discursive representations of the social actors in the U.S. State Department's coverage of Amazigh struggle for their linguistic and cultural rights in its annual reports on human rights practices in Morocco, between 1999 and 2020. The data comprises 21 texts with 5796 words. These are the content of the National/ Racial/ Ethnic Minorities section within the pertinent reports, available on the State Department's online database. The investigated section follows the section of Persons with Disabilities. The findings show that the Amazigh issue has not been reported with careful attention; inaccurate information has, for instance, been detected. The inclusion representational categories are predominantly used; differentiation and categorization are given special weight, compared to the strategies of genericization, individualization, objectivation, and assimilation. Assigning distinctive prominence to two groups aims to emphasize the persistent conflict in Morocco between the disempowered Amazigh activists and the empowered Moroccan authorities. The exclusion representational categories, on the other hand, specifically backgrounding and nominalization, are also heavily employed to mystify agency in critical situations, mainly when the related social actors are the authorities. The study concludes that the representation of the social actors is influenced by the ideological stances and agenda of the U.S. State Department.

Abstract

Language education has remarkably undergone a major shift since the advent of the communicative approach in the 1970s. As English has long become the world’s lingua franca, the approach to its teaching and learning has also witnessed an outstanding breakthrough. This is illustrated by the growing figures of non-native English language speakers that far exceed the native ones, and that entails a special status for English. Therefore, different proposals have been made as to how English should best be approached in teaching given its various characteristics as an international language for communication. One of these approaches is English as a medium of instruction (EMI). In this regard, and in their attempt to attain internationalization and develop the quality of higher education, many institutions in non-English speaking countries (e.g., Japan, China, Malaysia, Germany, etc.) have opted for the world’s first language as a means of instruction in various academic subjects, namely the science-related ones. This paper, then, is set to conceptualize and highlight the process of using English as a language of teaching and learning at the tertiary level, and explores its potential benefits and challenges for students and professors in the Moroccan higher educational context.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a model of interactive learning media by focusing on online activities with synchronous and asynchronous models to improve the quality of English learning. The study provides some discussion about preparing an interactive online learning by deploying various types of activities which group into synchronous and asynchronous activities. The data collected from English skill class which include Elementary Reading and Writing and Elementary Listening and Speaking. The result of the study shows effective model for developing interactive medias for teaching English skill. It is very important to design learning activities aligned with the learning outcomes and learning objectives. To create an effective online learning environment, teachers should consider about the interactivity of the learning activities and the mode of content delivery. Both synchronous and asynchronous activities have benefits and drawback. Hence to get a maximum benefit of online learning, teachers need to combine synchronous and asynchronous activities and design which activities should be delivered in each mode.

Abstract

The exercise of power in leadership may involve conflicts, especially in precarious situations. Politeness strategies come into practice to cushion the aftermath of face-threatening acts that presumably trigger tension. This study aims to shed light on female leaders' linguistic strategies in managing problematic discourses involving older male subordinates in the Indonesian university context. The naturalistic data was obtained from recorded meetings. The study results depict that the female leader employs both direct and indirect strategies in handling problematic issues, especially when the female leader has to face up to senior subordinates. She adopts direct strategies to convey important messages that have to be obeyed by the employees. On the other hand, she adheres to the cultural norms that oblige younger people to show respect to older people by using indirect strategies. The politeness strategies employed in her utterances show how culture shapes communication approaches. In general, a female leader has to have a range of sophisticated linguistic competence in a high-rank managerial position.

Abstract

The effectiveness of e-learning has some uniqueness and challenges in terms of obstacles faced, and its learning model. This research employs the observation method by observing both spoken and written data, survey, and interview. Data was obtained from 80 higher institutions students and 50 lecturers of four state-owned institutions, and four private institutions. The results show that the effective learning conducted through e-learning has met the expected standard. Through the learning process, the students were provided by motivational training, and educated with character building based on their religious belief. Moreover, the lecturers carried out their teaching process through WhatsApps Group, zoom meeting and/ or google meet applications, and provided the students with instructions and guidance. The instructions and guidances were particularly concerned on how to conduct the online classes with the camera on, comprehending the Semester’s Lesson Plan (SLP) for the whole semester, providing feedback on the materials, examples, video assignments, and weekly tasks given. Besides that the instructions and guidances were also specified for the students to seize the opportunities to present their tasks virtually. Likewise, the supports from the institutions are also needed concerning the committee for quality assurance in the implementation of E-learning, draft, attendance list, journal, contract of the course, motivational to the lectures in implementing E-learning, and video conference room (Vicon) as well.
