Abstract

It is known that the reading performance of disadvantaged students is lower when compared to non-disadvantaged students. It has always been discussed that being disadvantaged affects teachers' bias in scoring students' reading performance. Therefore, the existence and effect of the teacher factor in the low level of reading performance of students in disadvantaged groups is worth investigating. The reading comprehension skills of disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged fourth grade primary school students were assessed in this study. Moreover, whether the classroom teachers were biased in scoring the reading comprehension skills of the disadvantaged students were also investigated. The reading comprehension skills of 48 students, 13 of whom were disadvantaged and 35 were non-disadvantaged, were assessed by three classroom teachers (raters) using an analytical rubric. The data were analyzed using the Many-facet Rasch measurement model. It was found that the classroom teachers were biased in evaluating the reading comprehension skills of disadvantaged students. Likewise, the reading comprehension levels of the non-disadvantaged students were higher than the disadvantaged students.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the level of digital literacy of elementary school teachers, especially in the technological dimension. Based on the Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 14 of 2005 concerning Teachers and Lecturers, article 20 verse 2, teachers are required to be able to use technology. However, in reality, many teachers still have a low ability in using technology. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. The subjects in this study were teachers of grades 1 to 6 coming from six different elementary schools. The classroom teacher's digital literacy level was measured using a test technique. The results of the study showed that teachers of grade 1, grade 2, grade 3, and grade 4 had low digital literacy categories, while teachers of grade 5 had moderate digital literacy categories, and teachers of grade 6 had a very low category of digital literacy. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is no equality in the digital literacy abilities of classroom teachers in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to get the opinions of primary school 2nd and 3rd-grade students about the life studies lessons taught with distance education in the 2020-2021 academic year. For this purpose, open-ended questionnaires, document reviews, and interviews were used as data collection tools in the study, which was designed with a case study, one of the qualitative research designs. The study was continued with the students selected by criterion sampling from the 2nd and 3rd-grade students attending a public school on the European side of Istanbul. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. it has been determined that primary school students prefer to teach life studies at school rather than distance education. In addition, it was found that one of the common reasons for students who like or dislike distance education is "seeing their teachers and friends". However, the students stated that they learned the life studies lesson better at school, the lessons were more fun, and they could hear the teacher's voice better at school. It can be stated that primary school students prefer to teach the life studies course at school, and they think that the life studies course taught with distance education can be enriched by being taught in more active and different methods and places in out-of-school environments. In this study, the findings obtained from the views and drawings of the total students teaching the life studies course in the 2nd and 3rd grade level with distance education are limited. students want the distance life studies course to be taught in an active, comfortable environment and with alternative learning methods and techniques rather than classical methods.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the cognitive awareness of reading strategies of secondary school students, the relation between the cognitive awareness of reading strategies and writing anxiety, and the common effect of some variables on cognitive awareness of reading strategies. This quantitative study is an example of a relational survey model with correlational research features. Data have been collected through two different scales. 339 secondary school students have participated in this research. Mean, frequencies, standard deviation, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Simple Linear Regression, and Two Way Anova have been used for data analysis. As a result of the study, secondary school students have good cognitive awareness of reading strategies, and there is a negative relation between cognitive awareness of reading strategies and writing anxiety. Verbal academic success is a predictor of cognitive awareness of reading strategies, and the common effect of gender and writing anxiety doesn’t influence cognitive awareness of reading strategies.

Abstract

To ascertain whether lecturers had the pedagogical competency skill needed in impacting students with necessary skills they need outside school, this study developed a scale to measure Lecturers’ Pedagogical Competence (LPCS) in universities using item response theory. The pedagogical competence of university lecturers was assessed using a set of items designed and evaluated the scale's construct validity. The initial scale consisted of a 70-item four options Likert-type. The multi-stage sampling procedure was employed. Proportional sampling was used to choose four universities in South Western Nigeria. At each of the institutions selected, 20% of the staff population was selected from all faculties using stratified random sampling with a cadre as a stratum. Thus, 906 lecturers from federal universities and 294 were selected from federal state universities, respectively. In all, 1,086 of the 1200 lecturers selected completed the study's instrument. The results showed that four of the six optimal factors underlying lecturers’ pedagogical competence were reliable. Eventually, 20 can measure LPC. Furthermore, the LPCS showed validity by optimally measuring the theoretical construct underlying the scale. Evaluation of learning outcome; managing student behavior during lecture; using ICT to Enhance learning; and lecturers’ student interaction remains the most important factors in LPCS.

Abstract

During the industrial revolution, the quality of education improved, and this was reflected in competent and professional teachers. Teacher professional competence can be achieved by combining personal, scientific, technological, social, and spiritual skills.. This study aims at assessing prospective teachers' professional abilities in developing lesson plans that are integrated with the Project Based Learning and TPACK models in Microteaching course. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study research design by involving 10 prospective elementary school teachers enrolled in sixth semester. Data collection was carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation, while data analysis was carried out qualitatively, comprising data reduction, verification, and conclusions. The findings obtained revealed that the professional competence of prospective elementary school teachers was adequate but could be improved. According to the interviews, they were able to develop a scientific mindset in preparing lesson plans with subject mastery based on basic competencies and learning objectives. In fact, four participants were able to develop lesson plans using project-based learning models. In the analysis process, it was also found that these prospective elementary school teachers were able to integrate TPACK, meaning they knew how to link material with the use of technology and were able to teach it in simulation activities carried out in class. However, some of them still struggled to make project-based learning plans, especially in designing projects relevant to teaching materials. Overall, it can be concluded that the professional competence of prospective teacher students was adequate but could be improved, particularly in their capacity to design projects relevant to the material and learning objectives in elementary schools.

Abstract

In reality, Organization Citizenship Behavior in an institution is not as expected. However, the contrary occurred at the Integrated Islamic Elementary School in Bekasi Regency that teachers and staff have a spectrum of abilities and the potential to advance the institution. This research identified and analyzed (1) the role of the principal in improving teachers behavior through transformational leadership, and (2) the inhibiting and supporting factors in improving good teachers behavior and attitudes at the Integrated Islamic Elementary School in Bekasi Regency, Indonesia. The research used a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The principal, representatives, and teachers were informants to obtain the necessary data. The findings showed that the implemented Organizational Citizenship Behavior embodied sincerity, mutual help, brotherhood, and seriousness. However, it still needed improvement to achieve maximum teachers performance in carrying out the task of educating, guiding, training, and directing the students. One of the obstacles in implementing transformational leadership was that several teachers underestimated this program. This research has an implication that Organizational Citizenship Behavior in an institution can be realized if a leader implements a transformational leadership system.
