Abstract

With its distinctive form and content, African dance stands apart, carving out a unique identity that sets it apart from other continents. Its inherent rhythm possesses a magnetic quality capable of compelling people to move, transcending language barriers—an attribute that has propelled African musicians, particularly those from Nigeria, to a dominating position on the global music stage. This paper delves into traditional African dance, explicitly focusing on the rhythmic opulence found in the dance of rattles, costumes, and water pots within Seki. This captivating dance drama pays homage to the vibrant culture of the Niger Delta in Nigeria, Africa. Authored by Yibo Koko, the Seki dance drama undergoes a transformative journey, skilfully repackaging the traditional village square theatre into a digitalized theatrical experience accessible both as a live performance and in the dynamic space of new media. The paper employs a robust methodology and theoretical framework, drawing on dance theories, historical surveys, and analytical reviews of Seki performances to unravel the nuanced layers of this artistic expression. In scrutinizing Seki, this paper not only sheds light on the captivating exploration of rhythmic elements, including rattles, costumes, and water pots, but also underscores the broader impact of Seki's performance. The dance drama is a compelling canvas that radiates colours and a flawless rhythm, capturing global attention and playing a pivotal role in restoring the splendour of African ancestry. Through this repackaged theatre experience, Seki becomes a vehicle for exporting African culture, offering a renewed perspective that transcends borders and celebrates the rich heritage embedded in the dance's vibrant tapestry.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the usage of implicatures in soundtracks for plot developments in Disney’s 2021 movie Encanto. An implicature, at its core, functions as a means to provide context or a deeper level of understanding that is otherwise invisible unless the listener understands the topic at hand. Such is why the usage of implicatures can be seen as literary devices, either in song lyrics or movie scripts. By comprising evidence from diaries on this topic and research conducted on this study, this paper outlines implicatures present in songs being used as a means of plot development for the movie in which the song originates. This study found that by using the concept of Gricean Maxim's flouting, a theory proposed in the study of implicatures, lyrics of soundtracks containing implicatures can be used as a means of establishing a status quo, foreshadowing future events that may later happen in the movie as either a comedic effect or alluding to real life situations for poetic effect, and also by presenting it in a more word-structurally format.

Abstract

Lamalera is a traditional fishing village. The Lamalera indigenous people are traditional fishermen, who catch whales in the traditional sea area of the Sawu Sea. In 2014, the Sawu Sea was designated as a conservation area and National Marine Park by the central government through the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the regional government of East Nusa Tenggara. Since then, the Lamalera indigenous people have been worried that the tradition of whaling will be banned and access to marine spaces will be restricted due to strict enforcement of conservation laws in the future. Thus, this research reports the aims of (1) exploring the Lamalera community’s local wisdom through the form of socio-ecological capabilities and practices of the traditional fishing community and (2) positioning the local wisdom as a cultural foundation for marine environmental governance. This research uses qualitative methods with cultural phenomenological, environmental justice, and environmental governance analysis. The results found were that the Lamalera community had social-ecological capabilities, namely lefo, tena-laja, and ola nuâng-lefa nué. Based on these findings, this research also encourages partnerships between the central government, regional governments, and the Lamalera indigenous community in supporting sustainable conservation and equitable management of the Sawu Marine National Park.

Abstract

Learning influenced by multitasking and the development of rapid search technology, social networking, artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and big data are considered to be the influences of the major shift from education 4.0 to education 5.0. Therefore, it becomes important for teachers and students to understand the theoretical gaps that exist in Pedagogy, Andragogy, and Heutagogy in order to spearhead a broader discussion about how the teaching-learning process occurs in and will happen in the post new normal. This paper is an attempt to compare and suggest ways to integrate Pedagogy, Andragogy, and Heutagogy in New Indian English Classrooms where connectivity is key to its success.

Abstract

This study discusses an advertising video of “MS Glow for Men” starring Babe Cabita and Marshel, which is intended as an encouragement for people to promote self-acceptance and break the myth of beauty of light skin and a perfect body. This study aims to answer the questions of how advertising was created, distributed, consumed, or perceived by the public and seek the explanation of how the body image represented in MS Glow for Men advertising. The researchers answer the question by applying Stuart Hall’s framework of the circuit of culture that covers five aspects: regulation, production, identity, consumption, and representation. The study shows that the advertising contains a message that the standardization of beauty should cover all types of body image and physical appearance by representing the idea that anyone can become an ambassador of the beauty brand just like Babe Capita and Marshal. The visual text shows that the advertisement influences the audience in building a perception of the ‘beauty’ through the visual image of the advertisement which presents a more realistic notion of beauty.

Abstract

Ne’ Balungkur represents the inherited living value of traditional paddy farming lived by Dayak Kanayatn. Concerning the ecofeminism ideology, this study aims to reveal the existence of women and nature in traditional paddy farming in Ne’ Balungkur folklore in relation to the cultural-value system. Enriching the ecofeminism perspective in this study, the community prominent figure of the Dayak Kanayatn community was interviewed to give triangular validity to the data interpretation. Exhibiting comprehensive ecofeminism analysis to show the representation of woman empowerment through Dayak Kanayatn's code of conduct in planting to harvesting paddy is the main contribution of this study. Ne’ Balungkur demonstrates how women of the Dayak Kanayatn tribe are respected for their roles in traditional paddy farming and cultivation. This woman’s role in Ne’ Balungkur folklore challenges the customary male supremacy in Indonesian agriculture. This study is also able to identify the pattern of the cultural-value system. The pattern of the domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis shows that the current religious system, which blends ritual, custom, and religion into a single thought, has always been entwined with culture and education. Numerous opportunities for incorporating local folklore especially from West Borneo into official educational contexts are suggested by this study

Abstract

Language changes over time due to social and cultural factors. These changes are evident through language varieties such as standard and non-standard languages, dialects, accents, and registers. This research focuses on one type of language variation, namely slang. Slang words show that language is constantly changing. For example, there are many new slang words that emerge and old ones that are no longer used or replaced. This research aims to identify the slang words that appear in the comments section of the TikTok during June to December 2022 and analyze the word formation process of each slang found. The authors used the qualitative descriptive method in order to present the data thoroughly. This study found that there were 39 slang words that appeared repeatedly and there were six most common word formation processes found in TikTok comments, namely blending, clipping, borrowing, acronym, affixation, and multiple processes. The most frequent processes are blending and clipping. The least frequent word formation processes are affixation and borrowing.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the participation level of stakeholders, identify the dominant stakeholders, and investigate the factors inhibiting stakeholders’ participation in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of creative economic development in Cirebon City. “Creative City” is politically and legally stipulated as the city vision in the regional mid-term development plan 2018-2023 of Cirebon City. As the creative economy is centered around the production, exchanges, and consumption of goods and services from human creativity, Cirebon City is, therefore, a significant case study to investigate how the local government implements participatory processes in developing a creative city.Using qualitative methods, data were collected through a semi-guided interview of 190 respondents from five stakeholders: academics, businesses, communities, government institutions, and media organizations. It was followed by a focus group discussion of 12 key respondents selected purposively from the five stakeholders. With primary and secondary data sources, qualitative data was analyzed through the process of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.This study concluded that stakeholders' participation in all stages of creative economic development in Cirebon was still minimal. The businesses in culinary subsectors as the most dominant stakeholders in the participation processes. The lack of socialization from the municipal government and the limited collaboration amongst the stakeholders were identified as the inhibiting factors of inclusive participation in creative city development. The government needs to accelerate creative economic development through multisectoral policies, including improvement of business knowledge and skills of the local business actors, goods and services’ quality upgrading and assurance, certification and legal assistance, as well as promotion and market expansion
