Celt: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching & Literature is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published biannually in the months of July and December with p-ISSN (printed): 1412-3320 & e-ISSN (electronic/online): 2502-4914 It presents articles around the area of culture, English language teaching and learning, linguistics, and literature. Contents include analysis, studies, applications of theories, research reports, and materials development. It is firstly published in December 2001. Ever since 2005 its manuscripts could be read online through www.journalcelt.com. By the year 2016, it launched its OJS (Open Journal System) through https://journal.unika.ac.id/ index.php/celt and from 2017 it is recorded in Crossref’s https://doi.org/10.24167 and in https://doaj.org/toc/2502-4914. Abstract

It has been a formula in films, comics, animations, and games to narrate a protagonist who turns into an antagonist to offer an alternate narrative to enjoy. This good-to-evil and weak-to-strong transformation is followed by changes in the names of the characters. We argue that the name changes are marked by what we called as umbralatives, an augmentative marker to indicate that a character has undergone a nuance shift from light to dark and an increase in power. This study attempts to address this phenomenon by proving the existence of umbralatives, their typology, and functions. Applying Zwicky and Pullum’s expressive morphology, Dressler and Barbaresi’s morphopragmatics, and Reinhart’s gestalt perception of narrative texts, we attempt to prove the existence of umbralatives. Implementing Spradleyan analysis on a corpus of characters from seventy one titles of animations, comics, films, and games, it was revealed that umbralatives are classified into colorative, stative, referentive, inventive, and elliptive. These five umbralatives function as a narrative marker in animations, comics, and films and a ludic marker in games. This study discloses a new field of study on morphology with special emphasis over the combination of morphopragmatics and onomastics – umbralatives. The results of the study might also disclose further investigations over good-to-evil narratives which we call umbral narratives.

Abstract

This article examines the correlation between the voices of documentary films and the storytelling methods of four Indonesian biographical documentaries as the objects of analysis. They are Mendengar Si Bisu Bernyanyi: Biografi Pramoedya Ananta Toer (Srikaton, 1995), Ki Hadjar Dewantara: Mata Air Kebangsaan (Anshoriy, 2017), Bapak Komik Indonesia: Biografi R.A. Kosasih (Ahdan, 2019), Melawan Lupa: Polisi Jujur itu Bernama Hoegeng (Taharani, 2020). The documentary voice suggests the perspective, argument, or position of the filmmakers expressed in their works. As to the scope of storytelling includes elements of documentary narrative style, modes and power of documentary storytelling, modes of documentary presentation, and montage editing. With these two aspects – the voices and the storytelling methods – the audience has better access to gain insights from the documentaries. The analysis is carried out by making use of the filmic close reading and note-taking method through cinematic observation and interpretation. The finding suggests that the voices of the films are ideationally and aesthetically articulated through their storytelling methods. The documentary voices and their storytelling methods play a crucial part in helping the films build their credibility in line with the evidence employed.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between student-teacher interaction, students' academic motivation, and the teacher's motivation in the eighth-grade English classroom.   Quantitative and qualitative data on student-teacher interaction and academic motivation in English learning were collected using a questionnaire, observation, and interview.   137 eighth-grade students at Semarang's Karangturi junior high school in the academic year 2022-2023 were the subjects of this study.  Using an observation sheet from Ottevanger (2001), it was determined to see to what extent the teacher uses student-teacher interaction to increase students' and teachers' academic motivation. A final interview is conducted with the English teacher to determine her perception of student-teacher interaction. The results demonstrate a correlation between student-teacher interaction and students’ academic motivation in English classes. The instructor utilizes these interactions by posing questions and issuing directives. Moreover, the instructor concurred that student-teacher interactions are highly beneficial for both students and instructors.

Abstract

English language teaching (ELT) serves as a tool to teach students how to communicate in workplace. Character education taught in ELT can influence some of the ways students live in society, in terms of ethics, philosophy and principles. Moral education, as a part of character education, can be included in language learning and in character development in three important ways: integrated into school practice with an emphasis on literacy, socialized by moral content, and applied to course materials. This research provides description on developing human resources quality through character education. There are 38 respondents in this research, 36 students and 2 lecturers. They are chosen to obtain more objective data. The implementation of character education in teaching process happens from the planning to evaluating process. In planning, it shows that most students already know character education and its importance in higher education. In enacting process, most students implement moral values in their daily life. It makes their soft skill quality increase, both in personal and professional qualities. Last process is evaluating. In this process, some students think that the lecturers always help them internalize character education by implicitly including it in the problem sheet and the scoring rubrics.

Abstract

Symbolism is a powerful tool employed by authors to convey ideas and thoughts through the use of symbols and signs, imbuing everyday objects with deeper meanings in their works of literature. In addition, symbolism can have political implications, as it can represent political institutions, hierarchies, movements, beliefs, or ideologies, through objects, people, words, performances, or gestures. Through a content analysis approach, this research examines the symbolism used in  The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses and how everyday objects are utilized to depict power relations. The symbols analyzed in this research are glasses, fertilizer, and tobacco. Glasses were found to represent Brille’s vulnerability/intellect. Fertilizer symbolizes Warder Hannetjie’s weakness, and tobacco symbolizes authority. By analyzing the symbols portrayed in literary works, especially writings that have a political connotation to them, it goes to show that sometimes the objects portrayed in literature are not just depicted for creative intentions, but also for critical depth.

Abstract

Sustainable development requires the community’s active involvement, as well as other development inside the village. One of the most crucial dimensions of development in recent years is the environmental issues, especially waste problems, where there is  a lot of unhandled waste in rural areas. Fortunately, now there are villages that have succeeded in managing their waste in a sustainable manner with the support of village women's participation. The aim of this study was to determine the participation of village women in sustainable waste management. The research method uses descriptive qualitative data collection through in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), observation, and documentation. The results showed that the participation of village women in the flow of sustainable waste management has various forms of participation, which contained in each stage activities of management, sorting, transporting, processing, and utilizing the results of waste processing. Factors that encouraged the participation of village women in village waste management development were the community’s own willingness, ability to perform, and the opportunity to be actively involved. The village women proved that they were the largest producers of household waste, but at the same time were the ones that helped solve the waste problem. Through their services to their community, they have also increased the family's economic income through their involvement in waste management.

Abstract

Popular culture refers to a culture enjoyed by the mass because it is closely related to people’s lives. One such pop culture product is film. In this paper, the the main data for discussion is a Malaysian animated series, Upin Ipin and the Indonesian animated series, Adit Sopo Jarwo The first episode of Upin Ipin and the two episodes of Adit Sopo Jarwo are used to see how the series used popular culture strategies to maintain their popularity, and how through analyzing the plot, similar moral values are found. The method used to analyze is s Roland Barthes’ semiotics. The result of the research showed  that both animated series were the products of pop culture because the series fulfilled the characteristics of satisfying viewers, easy  to obtain, showed an eagerness to please viewers, and  reflected the culture of the Malaysian and Indonesian society. Two similar moral values which were obedience and gratefulness were found in those animated series. The obedience was shown through young characters who were not scared to confront  older people, but also show how to respect  elders . Gratefulness in the series in the animated series were found through seeing the characters see the positive sides of life

Abstract

Gudeg, a traditional culinary dish from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, is prepared by cooking young jackfruit with coconut milk and spices. It is commonly served with rice, eggs, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek, which is a spicy blended chili cooked with savory edible soft cowhide. Gudeg is interesting to discuss as it holds a rich history and is a cultural legacy that has been passed down through generations in Indonesia. Over time, gudeg producers have introduced an innovation of providing a visually attractive label on canned packages.  This gives reason for research on gudeg using a cultural, food safety, and visual design perspective. The research found that culturally gudeg was the staple for the Mataram Kingdom army to survive the battle against enemies who wanted to colonialize the area. Next, the food safety test revealed that canned Gudeg Bagong had a microbial count of 1.3 x 10-1 CFU/ml, while canned Gudeg Andrawina Loka had a count of 2.4 x 10-2 CFU/ml. The findings demonstrated that the microbiological analysis met the standards set by Ministry of Health Regulation No. 416/MENKES/PER/IX/1990 and Indonesian Food and Drug Authority Regulation No. HK.00.06.1.S2.4011. Lastly, through visual design research, it was found among others that local and foreign tourists prefer to see the actual photo display of gudeg set with its jackfruit, egg, chicken, and sambal goreng krecek contents.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the text of national law and the text of customary law on inheritance. This research is a forensic linguistic study to find the correlation of meaning between national legal texts and customary law texts and their implementation in society. The approach in this study is a qualitative research approach with text analysis. The method used is observation, recording, and interviews with community leaders in Kutuh village. The observation method with note-taking technique was carried out to find the correlation of meaning in national legal texts with customary law texts. The conversant method with face-to-face technique was carried out to find out the implementation of the legal text that governs indigenous peoples in the Kutuh village. The problems were analysed using the theory of forensic linguistics and supported by the theory of meaning. The result of this research is a positive correlation between national legal texts and customary law texts based on the meaning of the words in the text regulations on community inheritance rights. In addition, a positive correlation was also found in the implementation of customary law texts in the community.

Abstract

Postwar American society developed severe views on how men and women should behave, with family structure being the best way to grow the nation. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, print ads depicted women as housewives, feminine, self-conscious, and eager to please their spouses. Print ads deceived women by persuading them that appearance and seductive attractiveness in real life were what counted. Women's bodies became objects, which might desensitize them and normalize sexism. The American male-dominated culture shapes and reflects print ads' portrayals of women. American print ads have shaped society by leveraging real-world symbols to convince consumers that the products they see are part of their lives. This research is methodically analyzed using the feminist theory of Betty Friedan (1963) and the gender theory of Erving Goffman (1979) to examine how women are portrayed and how sexism is depicted in 30 selected American men’s apparel print ads from the 1950s–1970s. The results found that American print ads developed a sense of pride in women’s efforts to maintain the house or prioritize the requirements of their partner. Women have been portrayed as everything from incompetent to sexual objects. They expected to find fulfillment in a society of masculine dominance.
