Abstract

The production of corn as the second most important cereal crops after rice is dominated by smallholders, particularly in West Kalimantan. However, smallholders in farmer cooperatives are unsustainable because of the lack of decision-making power at the grassroots level; limited access to land, capital, technologies, information and financial services; low market competitiveness; weak management; and limited policy and socio-cultural norms. This research aims to construct the behavior model for performance change of cooperative farmers in Rasau Jaya, Kubu Raya district, West Kalimantan. It involved 75 smallholders recruited using purposive sampling technique. In-depth interviews using the structural equation modeling/SEM based on the new institutional approach and the theory of planned behavior were used in the study. The findings proved that intentions and past behaviors have positive and negative influence on farmers' cooperative behavior, but contradicted with control. Therefore, there are several efforts for changing the behavior in corn farmers’cooperatives, i.e. the perceived behavioral control can stimulate the motivation to be long-lived performing based on the resources and opportunities; pro-environmental behavior needs to engage a supportive injunctive norm and a supportive descriptive norm; a subjective norm for motivation to exhibitthe positive experiential attitude; and the confidence to perform and control their performance.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the risk of paddy rice farming and the impact of the use of farm inputs to the risk of rice production in Bali Province. The research was conducted in three districts of rice production centers, Tabanan, Buleleng and Gianyar during two cropping seasons in 2012. The data collected through interviews with 122 randomly selected farmers. Risk production of low land rice was analyzed by the coefficient of variation, while the factors that affect the risk of rice production were analyzed with multiple linear regression analysis with multiplicative heteroskedastic method. The result showed that the risk production of rice on  wet season and the land does not belong to his own status is higher than dry season and his own status. Production factors that significantly affect the risk of rice production are land, organic fertilizers and pesticides.

Abstract

Garlic (Allium Sativum L.) is a vegetable that has a lot of profit because its high economic value. Garlic consumption from year to year increases with population growth, but this increase has not matched with an increase in production due to many constraints such as pest attack. Training for garlic farmer aims to improve farmers' knowledge in the application of garlic environmentally friendly cultivation technology. Training of farmers was conducted on 14 April 2015 using the lecture method. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the training model using the lecture method to garlic farmers in Karanganyar. The samples used were 20 farmers from the garlic farmers in Karanganyar. Purposive sampling was used as sampling technique. The study was conducted by giving pretest and postest to determine the increase farmers' knowledge, then the data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical analysis (Wilcoxon Match Pairs Test). The results showed that the value of the Z count on the Wilcoxon test was -3.106 an absolute value. Furthermore, the error level of 5%, Z table = 1.64 so that the Z count is greater than Z table. This shows that training the farmers by using lecture method in Karanganyar was effective to improve the knowledge of the farmers.

Abstract

Glagahwero is one of the largest mushroom producers in Jember, though still lack of production. This research aims to determine factors of production, optimization of production factors, and profit by using optimal production factor. This research was conducted in Glagahwero Village with 32 samples of mushroom farmer. The samples were selected using total sampling method. Data were analyzed using cobb douglas production function to know the factors that significantly influence the production and value of the optimum input use of mushroom farming, and profit analysis to know the comparison of profit value by using the optimum production factor. The results showed that the area of kumbung, seedlings, straw and labor significantly influenced the production of mushroom in Glagahwero but the use of those factors were not optimal (ratio of NPMxi / Pxi 1), it is necessary to add the amount of production factor use to reach optimal value. The value of profit by using the optimal production factor will be greater than using the actual production factor. The results of this study then become basis in conducting mushroom farming in Glagahwero Village optimally by taking into account the amount of input that use.

Abstract

The Indonesian beef consumption increases sharply during Ramadan and made a difference between supply and demand. The research aimed to study the demand pattern of burger patties and determine a suitable forecasting method compared between quantitative and intervention forecasting methods. The actual demand was intervened by experts based on reasons such as supply shortage, holidays, promotion, and government projects. The daily sales of burger patties were collected for a year. Then, the data were divided into training and testing data. Later, time-series forecasting was performed by software. Then, the best forecasting method for daily data was selected between Individual forecasting and Top-Down forecasting. Similarly, for weekly data, the best forecasting method was compared between aggregate forecasting and Bottom-Up forecasting. Then, repeat the process for the intervened sales data. The result revealed that the mean absolute percentage error was improved after intervention by about 3.64%-58.83%. The combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches improved forecast accuracy. In addition, the aggregate level or weekly sales forecast had higher forecast accuracy than the disaggregated level. The Bottom-Up forecast performs better than the aggregate forecast. Hence, we recommended the company plans based on weekly data and implement Every Low Price to reduce the demand fluctuation.

Abstract

Farmland was regarded as the most important asset used to enhance agricultural productivity in developing countries to improve the livelihoods of restitution farm beneficiaries. Most, unfortunately, recent reports show decreased agricultural productivity in most developing countries. In South Africa, the Land restitution program was introduced to restore land to people dispossessed by apartheid government after 1913. However, production in the restitution farms has declined. This study aimed to address the non-performance of the restitution farms in Waterberg District and evaluate their production performance. A questionnaire was administered to gather quantitative data on the farms’ production and the benefits accrued from the farms. Data was captured using Geographic Information System (GIS), and then a remote sensing analysis method was used to map restitution farms to illustrate farms performance. Statistical Package for the Social Scientists (SPSS) version 25 was used to compute statistics on-farm production. About 83% of beneficiaries have not benefitted from the 32 farms, while 61.6% did not have markets, and 64% reported a lack of farms income. Generally, lack of farm production impeded beneficiaries from receiving benefits and employment. The study recommended that private organizations and sector departments work together to assist beneficiaries with capacity building, marketing of farm produce, and funds to improve production.

Abstract

In this study, we aims to determine the factors that affect the consumers’ food consumption behaviour and further to examine the impact of consumers’ food consumption behaviour toward food waste in urban area. This study collected 400 questionnaires from the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The findings showed that there are three latent factors from the factor analysis which related to the negative food consumption behaviour, which were consumers’ negative attitude on food demand, perceived behavioural control on food waste, and subjective norm.  Multiple regression analysis showed that the negative food consumption attitude and perceived behavioural control on food waste have significant impact on the negative food consumption behaviour. Furthermore, the chi-square test showed that the percentage of food waste related to the difference level of negative consumption behaviour on food. Besides that, the Pearson Chi-square also showed that over demand for food and did not consume the food before expired date are highly significant associated with the number of food waste created by a household. In conclusion, consumers’ proper planning on food consumption, cooking, and food deliver order playing a significant role to reduce food waste in Malaysia.

Abstract

An increasing population in recent decades has led to the need for increasing the availability of food, so it is necessary to increase the production of paddy as quickly as possible. The aim of this research was to know the supply response of paddy in East Java to various price factors and non-price factors. In this research, the supply response was estimated by the paddy harvest areas in East Java using Cobb-Douglas model and Nerlove partial adjustment, and econometric analysis including stationarity test, cointegration test, and Error Correction Model (ECM). The data used in this research consisted of paddy harvest areas, grain price, corn price, irrigated land area and rainfall amount from 1991 to 2015. The speed of short-term adjustment to the long-term supply of rice was 2.79% and was corrected in the next period. In the short run, all variables did not have a high responsiveness to paddy supply, but in the long run, the irrigation area was very responsive to paddy supply in East Java with a value of elasticity of 1.79. Supply of paddy can be increased by increasing the real price of unhulled rice, the irrigated land, and harvested area of the previous period.
