Abstract

Potato is an important commodity for livelihood in many parts of Ethiopia. Potato producers in Ethiopia face sophisticated marketing challenges, including inadequate access to market and low amount of marketed surpluses due to subsistence-oriented production of potato. The study aimed to identify factors that determine the market participation and its extents. About 136 potato producers were selected randomly from peasant association found in Dedo Districts of Ethiopia. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected from primary sources. Descriptive and econometric methods of data analysis were used to analyze data from the survey. A double hurdle model was applied to investigate factors affecting market participation and its extents. Results of descriptive statistics revealed that out of the total sample producer, 87.5 % of sample household has participated in the potato market. Age, sex, education, land size allocated for potato, and non-farm income were significantly influencing potato market participation. Age, sex, education (years of schooling), non-farm income, active labor and land allocated for potato influenced smallholder farmers level of market participation.

Abstract

Indonesia has failed to achieve meat self-sufficiency; meanwhile, East Java is among the centers of beef cattle with a relatively high contribution in terms of GDP and employment. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the market structure of the beef cattle commodity chain by considering the concentration ratio, Gini Index, as well as barriers to exit and entry. The study was conducted in Malang Regency and Sapudi Island, with 164 respondents, which consisted of calf suppliers, farmers, traders, and slaughterhouses. Furthermore, the analytical tools used include descriptive, concentration ratio, Gini Coefficient, and analysis of barriers to entry and exit. Based on the results, the market structures in the beef cattle commodity chain in terms of its input market was perfect competition, while the intermediate and output market was oligopoly. These results were confirmed by the concentration ratios of calf suppliers and farmers, which were lower than the ratios of traders and slaughterhouses. Although the market structures were different, their Gini Coefficients are almost similar because a value of 0.2 showed an equitable distribution. Additionally, the barriers to entry into the market were high investment with a large number of import and market problems. Meanwhile, the barriers to exit the market were a large number of potential demands, high investment, and a source of income.

Abstract

The increasing of global rubber consumption is an opportunity as well as a challenge for Indonesian rubber produsers to increase the quantity and the quality of production. Faced the competition between countries, the quality of rubber products should be enhanced adapted to consumer demand. This study aims to determine whether the quality of the rubber produced in PTPN IX (Persero) Garden Batujamus/Kerjoarum still within the control or not. This study uses time series data, in the form of rubber production data during March 2012 - February 201, that were analyzed descriptively using Control p Chart Analysis. Control p Chart describe the proportion of production damage that can be tolerated as a tool for statistical Control p Chart Application as Quality Control Tools for Rubber Production in PTPN IX Batujamus/Kerjoarum process control. This study shows that the quality of the rubber produced by PTPN IX (Persero) Garden Batujamus/ Kerjoarum is out of the control. The Control p Chart proves that there are still many points that are outside the production control line. The production domination of the third RSS type (RSS 3) cause this problem, so that the profit and the efficiency of the company can be increased if the RSS 3 product can be controlled and be changed with the production of RSS 1.

Abstract

The main production areas of chilli in Yogyakarta Province are in the wetland onthe slopes of Mount Merapi and in the sandy coastal area. This research was intended to compare the use of production inputs, technical efficiency and performance of chilli farming in both areas. The research was conducted in Pakem sub-district and Panjatan sub-district. The number of respondents in this research were 30 farmers in every sub-district. Descriptive analysis, frontier analysis and revenue-cost ratio were used in this research. The results indicated that the use of production inputs, production, technical efficiency, and performance of chilli farming in the sandy coastal area was higher than that in the wetland. The technical efficiency in the wetland on the slopes of Mount Merapi was determined by the quantity of counselling while in the sandy coastal area was determined by the quantity of counselling and farmers’ experience. The auction market in both areas proved able to increase the price of chilli. It is highly recommended that the extension officers need to be active in assisting farmers in both areas, especially related with chilli cultivation and processing technology.

Abstract

There are several problems of potato seed in the production center of Kerinci. The purpose of the study was to develop strategies for developing potato seed farming at the production center of Kerinci. The primary data gained from the Focussed Group Discussion (FGD) to formulate internal and external factors in the development of potato seed farming. FGD’s participants were expert respondents stakeholders in potato farming in Kerinci. The analysis technique uses SWOT analysis and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The results showed that there were four internal factors of strength such as of agroecological conditions, the existence of Potato Seedling Hall, the presence of breeders, and the development of processing industries. While three internal weaknesses were non-strategic locations, the dependent on seeds from outside the area, and limited seed supervisors. External factors of opportunity were preferred superior varieties, opportunities to be seed suppliers, and investment, as well as three threat external factors such as faked labeled seed, continuity of supply is not guaranteed, and the government is not paying enough attention to potato agribusiness. From these factors, eight alternative strategies were formulated. The results of AHP followed by sensitivity analysis indicate that the alternative policy that must be taken is strengthening the breeder to produce certified seeds and produce massively certified seeds at affordable prices.
