Abstract

The present study investigates love affair in Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. This was library research of which primary data source was Hedda Gabler play supported by other resources such as the author’s biography. The data were analyzed based on the individual psychology with a descriptive technique. The result showed that love affair was conducted by the major character, Hedda.

Abstract

This article has successfully aroused the violence of human’s right (HAM) by communists in the era of ironical HAM afterwards. Such a violence happens in the form of political force in the course of stricking, imprisoning, torturing, and kill- ing. Of those motives above, the forces can actually be traced back to its roots, marxis ideology. According to Galtung, it is an ideology as the cause of such vio- lence. He exemplifies with the case that most people have done killing for the sake of ideology. This novel presents an episode significant for the Indonesian historical background, G30S/PKI. The Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) force aimed to internalize its ideology in a country, has a great deal of its victims in the nation. Their violence is far from humanity principles. This case is illustrated by an author by presenting symbolic Moslem characters as the victims of PKI violence. Key words: violence, symbolic characters, protagonis, dan konstelasi sejarah.

Abstract

Interlanguage errors always exist in foreign language learning. They become thesource for studying the system of the learners’ interlanguage (IL). Han (2004) reviews hundreds of IL studies and concludes that there are two competing views can be identified. One view suggests that error treatment (ET) has unconvinced value in classroom second language acquisition or SLA (Krashen 1982). Adults do not require constant correction in useful ways; thus, the role of the teacher is to provide comprehensible inputs for the learners to move to the next stage of IL. ET has little value in SLA because IL is fossilized (Mukkatash 1987; Thep-Ackrapong 1990). This view corresponds with Patkowsky (1980), and Johnson and Newport (1989) who believe fossilization is due to CP. The opposite view comes from White (1991), Spada and Lightbown (1993), and Muranoi (2000) who believe that that ET is very important in foreign language (FL) learning. Learners can take a lot of benefits from ET as they can develop their IL system to a higher level of accuracy. This view corresponds with Scovel (1988), White and Genesee (1996), and Bialystok (1997) who deny the existence of CP in SLA; CP may applicable for the acquisition of phonology but not for syntax. Thus, grammar is learnable at any age. This study investigates the effects of a short-term error treatment (ET) on IL errors, with specific attention to the learners’ ungrammatical items. The problem states “what are the effects of a ET on the learners’ ungrammatical items?” Are their ungrammatical items fossilized (in a sense that they are static in nature) or dynamic after the learners have been exposed to the ET? The data were the learners’ free compositions collected four times: prior and after the ET and twomonths afterwards. They were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result indicates that the ET changed the state of the learners’ ungrammatical items. They became so dynamic. At a certain period, some appeared; then due to the ET, some were destabilized, some were fluctuating, and others were still stabilized. New errors appeared as they started learning to use new grammatical items. The conclusion drawn from this study is that ET can change the state of the learners’ IL errors; ET contributes to the destabilization process. Errors may persist momentarily but they can be destabilized. The ET still works on the learners who are at their post puberty. Thus, there is a great possibility for the learners to acquire complete TL grammar since their ungrammatical items are dynamic.Keywords: error treatment, interlanguage, fossilization, stabilization, destabilization.

Abstract

The poems composed by Zawawi Imron commonly involve the symbols of nature and Madurase culture such as the sun, moon, clouds, wind, fishing boat, fish, Siwalantrees, bull races and so forth. In the history of modern Indonesian literature, Imron is listed as a prolific poet of the 1960s. This paper explores the meaningful message contained in the poem of Tembang Spiritualwritten by Zawawi Imron. This literature study uses descriptive qualitative research method with semiotic and inter-textual approach. The object of the research is religiosity in the poem of Tembang Spiritual. The qualitative data of this study are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences which are collected by literature review and documentation. Heuristic and hermeneutic or retroactive are applied to analyze the data. The results show that people who keep the promises of their spirit to be obedience to God will receive eternal glorious place on the side of God, as stated in surah Al-a’raf 7, verse 172, surah Al-ma’arij 70, verse 32 and 35, and surah As-sajdah 32, verse 9. Surah Al-a’raf 7, verse 172 is transformed by Imron into the poem of Tembang Spiritual. The relegious elements transformed into the new text have a certain function, i.e. to remind human beings to thank God so that their lives will not suffer.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian (1) Mendeskripsikan struktur analogi tutur dan . (2) Mendeskripsikan proses analogi tutur masyarakat desa Kalipancur kecamatan Bojong kabupaten Pekalongan. Jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yaitu mendeskripsikan analogi (struktur dan proses) tutur masyarakat di bidang psikolinguistik. Penyediaan data menggunakan metode cakap (wawancara) dan simak.Metode cakap dengan teknik dasar berupa teknik pancing. Peneliti bercakap langsung dengan subjek penelitian. Teknik menguji keabsahan data menggunakan trianggulasi sumberpemeriksaan keabsahan data dilakukan dengan mengecek ulang data yang didapat. Analisis data menggunakan metode padan. Teknik dasar yang digunakan yaitu teknik Pilah Unsur Penentu (PUP) alat penentunya adalah kenyataan yang ditunjuk oleh bahasa.Hasil penelitian menemukan struktur dan poses analogis tutur masyarakat desa Kalipancur kecamatan Bojong kabupaten Pekalongan berbentuk frase berstruktur FN terdiri N + N, N + FN, FN + N, dan satuan lingual penanda analogi bersifat eksplisit. N teranalogi misal: suami, masyarakat, dan keluarga. Wujud satuan lingual analogis sebagai analog. Misal: atap rumah, menanam padi, dan surga. Proses analogi tutur masyarakat terjadi karena pengungkapan perasaan dan pemikiran O1 kepada O2.Kata Kunci: analogi dan tutur masyarakat

Abstract

The normal pronunciation of diphthong lies in putting the prominence or length to the nucleus vowel and gliding to the second one. However, this is not as the mostly phenomena of Javanese Learners of English (JLE)’s way of pronouncing diphthong. JLE tends to make shifts in pronouncing the quality of diphthong, one of which is a gliding decrease or omission. The data are collected by techniques of recording and demonstration. The data analysis uses techniques of comparing and contrasting be- tween JLE’s pronunciation and Received Pronunciation (RP). To amount of frequency in comparing JLE’s and RP, the percentage of the highest occurrence can be indi- cated. The result shows that JLE’s pronunciation of diphtong tends to reduce the fortis of nucleus before gliding or there is no gliding in the second vowel. Key words: sound shift, JLE, SPE, gliding, fortis, and pronunciation quality.

Abstract

Dalam tahun-tahun belakangan ini, banyak pendapat dalam berbagai forummenyatakan bahwa kompetensi menulis siswa-siswa kita mengalami penurunan.Mereka tidak mampu menerapkan proses pembelajaran dalam komunikasi tertulis.Secara umum, kemampuan ini diakibatkan oleh warisan sejarah nasional yangterkait dengan konsep pendidikan kolonialisme, tradisi komunikasi lisan,kebigungan dalam mengungkapkan ide atau gagasan, ketidakmampuan guru dalammengajar, panduan mata pelajaran dasar, dan model-model yang digunakan paraguru dalam menyampaikan pelajaran. Fenomena yang selalu menjadi pembahasanutama dalam proses pembelajaran menulis perlu diatasi sehingga kondisi yangtidak diinginkan dapat dipecahkan. Begitu pula, perlu menemukan penyebabnyasehingga dapat dilakukan diagnosis sebagai proses terapi. Riset ini merupakansalah satu upaya untuk memecahan permasalahan-permasalahan di atas.Kata Kunci: kompetensi menulis, komunikasi tertulis, proces terapi

Abstract

Sastra, terutama novel, tidak jauh dari bicara soal kehidupan bermasyarakat. Kehidupan bermasyarakat memiliki kaitan yang kuat terhadap kepribadian yang berhubungan dengan psikologi seseorang. Marni adalah salah satu tokoh utama dalam novel Entrok karya Okky Madasari. Kisah kehidupan Marni dalam novel tersebut sangatlah pelik sehingga sangat menarik untuk diteliti. Salah satu yang menarik untuk diteliti dari tokoh utama novel Entrok ini adalah kepribadian dari tokoh Marni.  Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa paragraf yang terdapat dalam novel Entrok Karya Okky Madasari dan sumber data novel dan buku acuan yang berkenaan dengan penelitian. Teknik sampling yang digunakan adalah purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan 2 teknik yaitu teknik baca, dan teknik catat. Teknik validitas data dalam penelitian ini dengan triangulasi data. Teknik analisis data dala penelitian ini adalah dengan analisis isi.   Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui aspek kepribadian tokoh Marni dalam novel Entrok karya Okky Madasari berdasarkan teori kepribadian psikologi Sigund Freud. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah tokoh Marni tersebut memiliki aspek kepribadian yang mengacu pada teori Sigmund Freud yaitu id, ego, superego. Kata Kunci: Psikologi sastra, kepribadian, Sigmund Freud, novel, Entrok.

Abstract

English teachers very often question whether they have to only rely on the cultureof the target language. Such confusion appears from their mind when they are involved in setting up the process of ELTL. Many English teachers assume that theculture of the target language should be the centre of ELTL as learning languagecannot be separated from culture. As a result, English teachers overwhelmingly provide students with texts or dialogs derived from the English speaking countries which reflect native speakers’ lives and behaviours. This somehow makes students difficult to understand the English materials as students have limited prior knowledge in lieu with the culture of the target language. Very often, the selected materials contradict to students’ beliefs leading to students’ unwillingness to study English. With regard to the above problem, this paper deals with promoting local culture in the process of English teaching and learning. It aims at encouraging English teachers to integrate the local culture into ELTL. Embedding students’ local culture in ELTL is believed to facilitate students to gain the success for learning English. Added to this, having deep understanding of the local culture establishes the awareness of students’ own local culture to be promoted in global communication.Keywords: local culture, english language learning, global communication
