Abstract

This paper is a part of a larger scale of interlanguage pragmatic study on Indonesian EFL learners in expressing request strategies. The research participants were forty students of Junior High School in Central Java, Indonesia. Data for this study were elicited from the respondents by written Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT), which consisted of nine situations in different social situations. The findings of the study showed the EFL learners employed both direct and indirect strategies of requests. Nevertheless, they mostly utilized conventionally indirect (hearer-oriented condition) strategies in the form of ability/willingness/ permission. Regarding direct request, they employed obligatory, performative and imperative requests. It was also found that the more familiar the interlocutors the more direct they will make requests. Keywords: request strategies, interlanguage pragmatics, indirectness, directnessAbstrak

A computer-based corpus software, AntConc v 3.4.3w andchi square test were employed to gain the hit numbers and the significant value ofthe possible different number appeared. This result would answer the question ofwhat the theme of the book is. The procedure of corpus analysis, which raw textis directly analyzed, was used along with collocation and concordance analysis. After the data was gained from collocation and concordance analysis, discourseanalysis was applied to obtain the profound findings of how the authors asserttheir opinion of quantum in the study of the cosmology. Abstract

Politeness becomes important in speech when what is about to be said has the potential to threaten the Hearer’s face. Often in communication it is necessary to say something that would threaten the other person’s face. In other words, Face Threatening Acts (FTA) are committed when the speech behavior is going to po- tentially fail to meet the Hearer’s positive or negative face needs. Doing FTA is a normal speech behavior and is not seen as a problem in itself. The problem arises when the FTA fails to be executed appropriately in order to mitigate potential problems that could result from doing the FTA. Prostitutes are considered as marginalized people, and then women as sub group tend to speak more politely. There are many subordinate groups which have their own set of communication rules, apart from the universal rules. There are different levels of required polite- ness and different ways of being polite, but all people have the need to be appreci- ated and protected, which Brown and Levinson call face needs. This study found interesting features in the way the subjects manipulate and manage their interac- tions in order to get their intended message across employed six positive and seven negative politeness strategies. Key words: FTA, Indirectness, Positive and Negative politeness.

Abstract

folktales and short stories will encourage children to love language, grow their interest in culture as well as strengthen their character building. In the other side, teachers often find it difficult to find ways to teach children about all those three matters. This paper will present how children literature play its significant role in exposing children towards character building, especially on leadership and brotherhood value. It will discuss a well known children short story tittled “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst. A story, full packed by the expression of love from an older brother to his younger brother, and his way of leading his younger brother as well. It is proven from the analysis that the story can be designed as teaching material for children so that they are exposed towards leadership and brother value. On the expectation that they will grow to be a wise and thoughtful person with a decent personality and intelegence.   Key words: children literature, leadership, brotherhood

Abstract

Folktales as a cultural expression can contain all aspects of human life including violence. As Indonesia comprises so many diverse cultures, the contextof violence, its degree and its nature, are also various. This study examines the forms of violence in Indonesian folktales, focusing on how physical and verbal violence are depicted in Indonesian folktales retold in children’s books that were published in ten years of post-reformasi period. Content analysis is used to scrutinize the forms of violence. The finding shows that physical and verbal violence in Indonesian folktales retold as children’s storybooks is prevalent. I argue that the diverse forms and nature of violence presented in children’s story books illuminate the connection between social and individual expressions of violence. This study provides a way to look at the structural and ideological function ofviolence in contemporary traditional folk literature.
