Abstract

Indonesian banking sector has recently been suffering from bad debt and liquidity problems. Crisis since 1997 has impoverished bank’s performance and reduced shareholder wealth. The deterioration of bank’s performance with respect to bank’s purpose to be an intermediation agent also affects the wealth of stakeholders, especially depositors. Agency problem has severe effects on bank’s performance. Openness policy especially in bank ownership structure also has an effect on competition between banks. Globalization forces early openness on banking industry, therefore foreign ownership in banking industry becomes usual in Indonesia. Central bank has an obligation to support citizen with variety of banking services, without sacrificing security. Although Indonesia has several prospective domesticowned banks, however crisis weakened national banking industry. Therefore, type of ownership should have difference effect on agency problems controlling mechanism. This research examines agency theory arguments in banking industry by analyzing the effect on firm specific variables, which are managerial stock ownership, leverage, dividend yield, and type of ownership. Agency costs proxy by earnings volatility, manager’s portfolio diversification losses, bank size, and standard deviation of bank equity returns. Types of ownership are domestic-owned banks, and foreign-owned banks. It is one of the first researches that examine the determination of financial policy variables based on agency theory perspective in banking industry. This research examines the largest 51 banks during the period of 1999-2004 using quarterly financial report. The result showed bank size and a measure of manager’s portfolio diversification opportunity set affect the bank’s level of managerial stock ownership, leverage, and dividends. The result also confirms the difference effect of type of banks ownership to controlling mechanism of agency problems.

Abstract

This paper examines the relationship of behavior trading investor using data detailed transaction history-corporate edition demand and order history in Indonesia Stock Exchange during period of March, April and May 2005. Peculiarly, behavior placing of investor order at trading volume. The result of this paper indicates that trading volume order pattern to have pattern U shape. The pattern happened that investors have strong desires to places order at the opening and close of compared to in trading periods. While the largest orders are of market at the opening indicates that investor is more conservatively when opening, where many orders when opening has not happened transaction to match. In placing order both of investor does similar strategy. By definition, informed investors’ orders more large than uninformed investors. If comparison of order examined hence both investors behavior relatively changes over time. But, statistically shows there is not ratio significant. This implies behavior trading of informed investors and uninformed investors stable relative over time. The result from regression analysis indicates that informed investors to correlate at trading volume in all time intervals, but not all uninformed investors correlates in every time interval. This imply investor order inform is more can explain trading volume pattern compared to uninformed investor order in Indonesia Stock Exchange. Finally, result of regression also finds that order status match has greater role determines trading volume pattern intraday especially informed buy match and informed sale match. While amend, open and withdraw unable to have role to determine intraday trading volume pattern.

Abstract

Economic developments in Lumajang still based on agriculture sector. One of the major agricultural commodities in Lumajang with patented flagship product is the “Pisang Mas Kirana”. Characteristics of “Pisang Mas Kirana” is no different than other agricultural commodities, which is easily broken and consumed in a fresh state, so it needs special treatment in post-harvest handling and the right strategy for the marketing of “Pisang Mas Kirana” to be effective and efficient. One marketing strategy that is widely used is to analyze the marketing mix “Pisang Mas Kirana”. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of each indicator with the marketing mix variables that influence and contribute to the creation of the brand image of “Pisang Mas Kirana”, with the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method to estimate the model parameters. The analysis technique used in this study is a confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that the perception of respondents  study to the marketing mix and brand image “Pisang Mas Kirana” were good. Most powerful indicator as a measuring product variable was the color, while the weakest was the packaging. Most powerful indicator as a measure of price variables were price variations, while the weakest was the price of “Pisang Mas Kirana”. Most powerful indicator variable as a measure of the distribution channel was location, while the weakest was transportation. Most powerful indicator as a measure of promotion variable was the media of the promotion, while the weakest was clear information. Most powerful indicator variable as a measure of brand image was the image of the consumer, while the weakest were the image makers.

Abstract

This research is consist of the concepts of how do the consumer involvement, consumer innovativeness, brand parity and brand loyalty could affecting the price sensitivity. Questionaires were used as the research instruments to the 150 of people who wearing shoes with brand “ABC” in Jakarta with using purposive sampling method and cross sectional data. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) analysis system was applied with AMOS software to hypothesized the empirical data. The result shows that there is a significant effect of the consumer involvement to the consumer innovativeness positively that can affecting to the price sensitivity negatively. Brand parity hypothesized proven that it has affected price sensitivity positively and so brand loyalty affecting the price sensitivity negatively. For further research, it’s recommended to extend more objects of study than shoes and add more other variables which are not include in this research.

Abstract

This research aims to determine a priority setting in the development of Indonesian coffee bean industry that can sustain the industry using Goal Programming technique. Based on the number policies, 18 goal programming models formulating some priority setting possibilities had been developed. The validation on the value of decision variables in the model showed that there are six valid models. The result suggested that (1) the development policy has to be prioritized to ensure the supply of plantation inputs, (2) the policy of conversion of Robusta areas to Arabica has to consider the economical and biological aspects, (3) the develop-ment policy has to be directed to export and domestic consumption promotion since the industry is considered as an export maximizing and able to satisfy the domestic consumption, and (4) the development policy has to consider the possibility of target conflicts so that a priority setting will not burden the industry economically.

Abstract

The main issue of this study is how family structure influences on consumer behavior. In this study both family structure intact, disrupted family structure and family structure associated with the attitude of materialism and compulsive buying with family stressors and family resources as mediating variables and socioeconomic status as a moderating variable. The purpose of this study is (1) to determine differences in attitude of materialism and compulsive buying among teenagers who come from intact family with a disrupted family, (2) to measure the influence of family resources and family stressors on the attitude of materialism and compulsive buying in adolescents and (3) for measure the effect of family structure on family resources and family stressors when moderated by socioeconomic status variables. Samples of this study are adolescents aged 11-16 years who live in the city of Yogyakarta. Number of samples consisted of 97 teenagers who come from the intact family structure and 38 teenagers who come from disrupted family structure. The results showed that there were differences in the attitude of materialism and compulsive buying among teenagers who come from intact family with a disrupted family. Teenagers who come from disrupted family and compulsive tend to be more materialistic than adolescents from intact family. The study also found that family resources and family stressors shown to affect the materialism and compulsive buying in adolescents. Effect of family structure on family resources, moderated by socioeconomic status. While the influence of family structure on family stressors. Not moderated by socioeconomic status.

Abstract

The study examine the earnings management practice in aquirer companies before and after mergers and acquisitions. It also show the difference financial performance. The purpose of this study was to prove the existence of the practice earnings management by the acquirer in the period prior to the mergers and acquisitions. this study also aimed to see whether there differences in the financial performance of the acquirer after the merger policy and acquisition of the manufacturing companies listed on the Stock Exchange over a period reporting year 2006-2008. The sample in this study are 13 manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in reporting mergers and acquisitions 2006-2008. The conclusion of this study is there is no strong evidence through discretionary accrual indicating that earnings management measures made by the acquirer in the period prior to the merger and acquisitions and also no significant differences in financial performance afterimplementation of mergers and acquisitions on the acquirer.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate and prioritize the various forms of strategic programs at the Bandung City Government in strengthening the economy and increasing purchasing power of the people in the city of Bandung based on public policy analysis. This study is comprehensive covering macro aspects, namely the potential and economic profile as well as the Human Development Index (HDI) and micro aspects, namely the external and internal environmental analysis relating to economic policy on purchasing power. Furthermore, evaluation and economic policy priorities in an effort to increase the purchasing power of the city of Bandung. There are few steps or effort in evaluating various forms of local government strategic program Bandung in economics in order to increase the purchasing power of the city of Bandung, namely: 1) Observing the potential and the problems by SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats). 2) Evaluation and prioritization of programs of economic analysis AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and connect it to the macroeconomic indicators Bandung. In conducting the evaluation and priority, strategic programs are done also based on the study of literature and discussions with experts. The number of respondents in this study is 15 (fifteen) and sampling was done by purposive convenience sampling. Based Matrix EFAS (External Strategic Factors Analysis Summary) shows that the Bandung City Government is in a strong position to exploit the opportunities that exist to minimize the threats that will arise with regard to the external factors that affect the purchasing power of the city of Bandung. The Government of Bandung can utilize the opportunities, which are significant factors, in order to increase the purchasing power of the people. These are plans such as: the Central Government Policies Regarding Rice for the Poor (RASKIN), Health Insurance for the Poor (insurance for the poor), and the School Operational Assistance (BOS), National Program Community Empowerment (PNPM), the People's Business Credit (KUR) with Interest Subsidy to Help Low Income Communities . Furthermore, from the results of Matrix IFAS (Internal Strategic Factor Analysis Summary) shows that the Bandung City Government is in a relatively strong position to use and harness the forces that exist to minimize the shortcomings encountered in efforts to improve the people's purchasing power. Internal factors that significantly influence the increase in purchasing power of the city of Bandung are the strong commitment of the Government of Bandung to increase purchasing power. Meanwhile, the biggest disadvantage factor and should be watched and minimized by the Bandung City Government in improving the purchasing power of the city of Bandung is a "Weak Monitoring and Evaluation Capability Strengthening Program Buy". The estimation results of AHP (analytical hierarchy process) to local agencies regarding the analysis of preference evaluation of Government programs of Bandung in economics in improving and strengthening the purchasing power suggests that external factors are the priority aspects. Meanwhile, based on analysis of the preferences of businesses, communities and government agencies to the actors who play an important role in strengthening the purchasing power of the city of Bandung show that the relevant local government agencies play an important role in influencing people's purchasing power state through a set of policies and programs it has taken.

Abstract

At this time, the firms faced tight competition. The firms expected to manage the resources possessed to be able to win the competition. One method used to develop the brand with the expansion of related or unrelated to the parent brand. This strategy is done by utilizing the parent brand advertising campaign media. In the advertising, usually raises the figure endorser such as a celebrityor not to display the endorser with a familiar brand or unfamiliar brand. By looking at the ads with display support different endorser and brands make different consumer response to the perception of risk purchase that ultimately led to purchase intention the product extension.This study was conducted to investigate the effect of endorser support and brand familiarity to perception of purchase risk and its impact on purchase intention of brand extension products. This study tried to see the main effect of the  variables and its interactions with the effect that using a factorial experimental design 2 (endorser support) x 2 (brand familiarity) with between subject methods. Data were obtained from 120 respondents who are students of S1 Management Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Airlangga.The analysis showed that there were no significant difference from the endorser support and there are significant differences from the brand familiarity on perception of purchase risk and there is no interaction effect between the endorser support and brand familiarity for reduces the perception of risk perceived by consumers. Perception of risk purchase also significantly influence consumer purchase intentions on the product brand extension.

Abstract

Academics said that earnings management and conservatism literatures are two different topics. Conservative accounting is different from earnings management in earnings determination. However, other academics claim that it is difficult to differentiate earnings management from conservatism in accounting. Both concepts have the same idea that manager can use their judgement to influence financial reporting, that is discretionary accrual. The purpose of this article is bridging this two stream by looking interaction between earnings management and conservatism in accounting.
