Abstract

This study analyzes tourists' perceptions, satisfaction, and expectations of Southwest Papua's tourist attractions to provide recommendations for improving tourism quality. This study uses qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation through video and photos, to explore tourists' perceptions, satisfaction, and expectations in Southwest Papua. The results of this study are: 1) In the three domains of tourists' perceptions, destination attractions, facilities and services, as well as safety and comfort.  Some tourists generally expressed positive perceptions, appreciating the authenticity of the natural environment and the immersive cultural experiences. However, certain challenges, such as unpredictable weather, accommodations, homestays, and management issues, led to negative perceptions, particularly among tourists from Asia. 2) Emotional and social satisfaction are the highest-rated aspects experienced by nearly all 350 tourists, surpassing functional satisfaction. Their sense of happiness is attributed to effective tour organization, fluent communication by tour leaders, and well-established social interactions with local communities. 3) Tourists expect better facilities and more government involvement in infrastructure and local training to improve the tourism experience. Collaboration between the government and tourist villages will greatly contribute to enhancing the positive values for visiting tourists.

Abstract

In today’s rapidly evolving academic and technological environment, English learners are expected not only to master language skills but also to think critically and communicate effectively. However, many EFL instructional practices still focus heavily on memorization, leaving students underprepared for real-world communication demands. To address this gap, alternative teaching strategies that promote both reasoning and speaking performance are needed. This study investigates the impact of structured debate instruction on the speaking and critical thinking skills of EFL undergraduate students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Kalimantan Timur. Using a pre-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, 26 fourth-semester English education students participated in a five-meeting intervention. Their performances were assessed using rubrics adapted from the IELTS Speaking Band Descriptors and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal framework. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, paired samples t-tests. The results showed significant improvement in both speaking and critical thinking skills (p < .001). Among the rubric indicators, inference and fluency showed the highest post-test scores, while deduction and grammatical accuracy showed the lowest. These findings suggest that debate can be an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing spontaneous reasoning and communicative clarity in EFL settings, while also highlighting areas that may require additional support.

Abstract

EFL learners employ a set of learning strategies in their learning of English. Learning strategies are claimed to be “internal mental drive” which EFL learners have in mind. Learning strategies are the internal power which enables EFL learners to acquire the so called language knowledge and language skills. It has been assumed that learning strategies are influenced by cultures of EFL learners. Consequently, EFL learners may employ different learning strategies, provided that EFL learners come from different cultures. This current research aims to disclose that each of EFL learners from the East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT) employs learning strategies, as in fact that in NTT lives many cultures. Specifically, this research treated six EFL learners who are from different cultures. Two learners came from the inland area of Ende (Flores); other two students were from the inland area of Timor and two others were from the city of Kupang, the capital of Kupang Municipality. The results of the research show that these EFL learners use the same learning strategies entailing Metacognitive, cognitive and social mediation strategies. The outstanding discovery of this study is that EFL learners, in their learning, are very much influenced by the so called “instructional learning”. Learning does take place for there is  instruction from their teachers. Autonomous learning, as far as data are concerned, still does not take place. Thus culture, in this study, has no influence to EFL learners in terms of  the use of learning strategies among EFL learners with different cultural background.

Abstract

Fix-Up Strategy is an approach used in learning to help students overcome difficulties or confusion in understanding the material being studied. This strategy aims to help students improve or "fix" their understanding when they feel unsure or confused about the information provided. The study aims to investigate whether the implementation of the fix-up approach can improve the reading comprehension skills of students attending SMA Negeri 7 Palu. This research utilizes a quasi-experimental design involving two distinct groups: the experimental group, which consists of 35 students, and the control group, comprising 36 individuals. The selection of participants follows a random cluster sampling method. Two assessments, including a preliminary evaluation and a follow-up examination, were administered to gather data. Subsequently, the collected data underwent analysis using paired difference testing, specifically employing the paired sample t-test. The findings of the study suggest that employing the fix-up strategy leads to enhanced reading comprehension among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 7 Palu. The results of the paired sample t-test support this observation, indicating a significant difference in academic performance between the pre-test and post-test (two-tailed, p = 0.000 < 0.05).

Abstract

There are differing opinions in the field of cognitive sciences when it comes to the role of sex in language acquisition. Men and women exhibit differences in their speaking and writing ability as a result of their distinct social roles throughout evolution. These disparities are equally, if not more, evident in students, both during normal and abnormal growth. In addition to the well-documented advantage that girls have in early language development, it is noteworthy that the majority of developmental problems that predominantly impact communication, speech, and language skills are more prevalent in boys. This article seeks to elucidate the disparities between sex regarding ordinary communication and language development, as well as the disparities in the occurrence of neurodevelopmental disorders connected to communication. Additionally, particular attention is given to data derived from the field of neuroscience, which may offer valuable insights into the neurological mechanisms that contribute to the comprehension of this event. We contend that the structural arrangement of the female brain confers women with an innate edge in developing communication and language systems compared to men. Divergent perspectives are present on the differentiation between sex within the field of cognitive sciences. The talks are founded upon clinical, social, and political perspectives. The evolutionary and biological perspectives have often emphasized arguments related to 'nature', whereas feminist and constructivist viewpoints have often emphasized arguments related to 'nurture' when discussing cognitive sex differences. This narrative review provides a comprehensive analysis of the origins and historical evolution of these arguments, as well as a summary of the findings in the field of sexually polymorphic cognition. By adopting multidisciplinary techniques, we aim to highlight the importance of interconnecting disciplines and gaining a more comprehensive knowledge of the precise factors that contribute to sex differences and gender diversity in cognitive capacities.
