Abstract

Oral communication has emerged as a crucial skill in language acquisition, particularly in learning English. For students learning English as a foreign language, speaking English poses a significant challenge that requires considerable effort to articulate coherent statements. The research focused on identifying psychological factors that impact students' speaking performance, with a particular emphasis on determining which variable has the most significant effect. Data was gathered through observation, questionnaires, and unstructured interviews. The study revealed that despite students' motivation and positive attitude towards English speaking in the classroom, anxiety and lack of self-confidence remain key obstacles that prevent them from speaking confidently. These psychological barriers stem from a fear of erring and being subjected to derision by one's peers. Further, it was found that anxiety was the most psychological factor affecting students’ speaking performance. To address these issues, many students believe that boosting their confidence in speaking English is crucial. This underscores the significance of educators being mindful of the difficulties their students face in speaking English during lessons.

Abstract

The focus of teaching English at schools, especially for beginners is to build vocabulary knowledge in addition to language skills and components. To achieve the goal, KIM Strategy can be implemented, which becomes the topic of this paper. Hence, this paper aims to review the related literature on the implementation and implication of KIM Strategy for vocabulary teaching. This is a library research, in which two types of data were presented. They were  primary and secondary data. The primary data was obtained from the original work of Kristen Vibas (1970), the proponent of the KIM Strategy, entitled KIM: A highly effective strategy to build vocabulary across any content area. Whilst, the secondary data were collected from journal articles published in the past 10 years, 2014-2024. The results revealed that the KIM Strategy is effective in improving students’ vocabulary knowledge due to its teaching principles that support various principles of inquiry learning, self-directed learning, and social learning. The KIM Strategy is also a strategy for enhancing logical, convergent, and divergent thinking skills.

Abstract

Language is a powerful tool for expressing identity, navigating relationships, and addressing cultural complexities, particularly in literary works that explore intricate social dynamics. This study investigates the interplay between language, cultural context, and communication within Amy Tan’s The Bonesetter’s Daughter, emphasizing how speech acts reflect and navigate complex social relationships. Through a socio-pragmatic framework, the research examines dialogues and interactions in the novel to identify illocutionary speech acts and their socio-cultural implications. Utilizing text and content analysis methods, data were collected using the AntConc tool to identify keywords associated with various speech acts, followed by a detailed analysis of the characters' utterances. The findings reveal 499 instances of illocutionary speech acts, categorized into assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative types as outlined by Searle’s theory. These acts illustrate the characters' efforts to navigate cultural conflicts, identity struggles, and generational tensions, particularly within the mother-daughter dynamic between Ruth and LuLing. The study underscores the role of language in mediating relationships, resolving conflicts, and expressing cultural identity. By providing insights into how speech acts operate within specific social and cultural contexts, this research contributes to the fields of sociolinguistics and literary studies. It highlights the practical application of socio-pragmatic analysis in understanding the relationship between language, culture, and identity in literature.

Abstract

Learning to read is not merely a classroom requirement; it is a skill that empowers individuals, enabling them to navigate the complexities of the world and fostering a lifelong love for learning. The objectives of this research are formulated to investigate the English teacher of perception about cooperative learning. The study employed a case study research approach. A case study is a method used to gain a comprehensive comprehension of a subject or event in an authentic environment. The result study shows that The effectiveness of a teaching method is contingent upon various factors, including the specific context, learning objectives, and the preferences of both teachers and students. While cooperative learning has demonstrated efficacy in numerous scenarios, it is recognized that alternative methods may also be suitable depending on the unique needs and characteristics of the class. This highlights the value of educators being open to exploring and adapting different instructional strategies to best meet the requirements of their students.

Abstract

In the international onboard training, the cadets must be able to have good and effective English communication. It is due to the operational communication on the ship that must be delivered in English. However, several cadets possessed some communication problems when delivering English communication during the operation of the ship. This study aimed to investigate (1) the English competence of Indonesian seafaring cadets, (2) the communication challenges they faced during international onboard training, and (3) the proposed solutions to these challenges. The research employed a mixed-methods approach at Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Makassar (PIP Makassar), involving 29 cadets who recently completed international onboard training. The data were gathered through documentation, open-ended questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. English competence was assessed using descriptive statistical analysis, while communication problems and solutions were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). Findings showed that cadets encountered physical (unclear radio conversations), linguistic (use of substandard English), psychological (lack of confidence), and cultural barriers (different communication styles), despite generally good English competence. Proposed solutions include habituating radio conversations, improving confidence, and adapting globally to various linguistic and cultural communication styles.
