Abstract

Students' speaking performance can be affected by the factors that come from performance conditions (time pressure, planning), standard of performance and amount of support), affective factors (such as motivation, confidence, and anxiety), listening ability, topical knowledge, and feedback during speaking activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze, describe and determine factors affecting students' quality in speaking performance of the third semester of Halu Oleo University. This study employed a quantitative design. The data was collected by using a close-ended questionnaire. All the items questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The population was students of the third semester of Halu Oleo University in the academic year 2016/2017. The samples were 62 students of the English Department, which were taken by purposive sampling. The result of this research were factors affecting students' difficulties in speaking performance of the third-grade students of Halu Oleo University showed that from five factors namely affective factors, linguistic factors, performance condition, listening ability factors, and feedback during the speaking activities. The result found that, the dominant category or the high percentage on factors affecting students' difficulties in speaking performance was listening ability factors. Where listening ability factors included grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It concluded that the students feel difficulty in speaking performance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the values of humanism contained in  Legend of Lau Kawar and how the process of applying the character values contained in Lau Kawar in the learning process. The values of humanism are the meanings contained in humanism in forming humans with integrity, having awareness, freedom, and responsibility as human nature. This study seeks to answer research questions; What are the character values found in Lau Kawar and how is the implementation of the character values found in Lau Kawar in the learning process. The object of this research is UPT SMP Negeri 21 Medan and the participants in this study were two informants from Lau Kawar village. This research shows that the vision and mission of the 2013 curriculum to shape students' character is not in accordance with reality. This research method uses qualitative methods with direct data collection. The current study concludes that there are several values of humanism in the Legend of Lau Kawar that can be implemented in the learning process to form good student characters, therefore the use of humanism values in the Legend of Lau Kawar must be taken into account by teachers and the school to shape characterstudents in accordance with the objectives of the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating the effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on student competence in writing descriptive text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. This research used a pre-experimental with One-Group Pretest-Posttest design (class VIII). The total sample was 30 students which were selected by using the probability sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test that focused on two aspects of writing namely vocabulary and language use. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test to know students writing competence before and after treatment of Microsoft office PowerPoint had been applied. The researcher used Microsoft excel 2010 and SPSS 16.0 to analyze the result of this research. The finding showed that there was an effect of Microsoft office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. The result of the descriptive analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 51.76 and the mean score of post-test was 79.70. The inferential statistics showed that there was a significant effect of Microsoft Office PowerPoint on students' writing competence. Hence, teaching and learning writing use Microsoft office PowerPoint can be one of the effective methods for upgrading students‟ writing competence

Abstract

This present study aimed to examine the effect of Quizizz application on students’ learning interest and reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Raha. This study was quantitative and the design was quasi-experimental. The technique of sampling was purposive sampling in XI MIA3 as experimental class and XI MIA4 as control class. The class of XI MIA3 consists of 30 students and XI MIA4 consists of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used the questionnaire to obtain data about students’ learning interest, and the test was used to obtain the data of students’ reading comprehension. The result of the questionnaire showed that there is no positive effect of Quizizz application on students' learning interest. Based on the result analyzed of independent sample t-test. The result showed that the value of sig (2- tailed) 0.073 was higher than sig 0.05. It means the that Quizizz application does not have a positive effect on students’ learning interest. While the finding of learning outcomes showed that there was a positive effect of Quizizz application on students’ reading comprehension. It was proved by the result of the independent sample t-test analyzed on SPSS 25, the value of sig (2-tailed) 001was lower than sig 0.05. It could be concluded that the use of the Quizizz application has a positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. From those findings, it could be concluded that the use of Quizizz application on students’ learning interest did not have a positive effect while on students’ reading comprehension had a positive effect.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to improve the learning outcomes of the English language learning material on the expression of asking and giving opinion by applying the interview learning model. This research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) which is carried out in two cycles with four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects in this study were students of class XI IPA 1.1 SMA Negeri 1 Lawa in semester 1 of the 2020/2021 academic year. The research instrument is a written test. Data analysis used descriptive analysis technique of comparison with percentage. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in students' motivation and learning outcomes in the expression of asking and giving opinion in English as seen from the average score. The average score of increasing motivation and learning outcomes in English for the expression of asking and giving opinion through the use of the interview learning model is shown at the average value of the initial state of learning achievement in the pre-cycle the average value is 59.81, in the Cycle I it increases to 69 .63 and in the Cycle II increased with an average value of 82.41. In terms of minimum completeness criteria (KKM) in the initial observation (pre-cycle) students who achieved the KKM were 40.74%, in the Cycle I it increased to 55.56% and in the Cycle II it increased to 85.19%. The conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that there is an increase in English learning outcomes in the expression of asking and giving opinion material with the use of the interview learning model which has increased significantly, so it is feasible to be applied in SMA Negeri 1 Lawa.

Abstract

This research was accomplished to investigated the quality of previous English teacher-made test and showed which aspect was reconstruct of the English teacher-made test on the second grade at SMP Negeri 2 Konawe Selatan. The design of this research was qualitative by applaying MER (Model of Educational Reconstruction) approach, which contained (1) Content structure analysis, (2) Empirical study, (3) Reconstruction process. The data analysis used qualitative analysis to see the apperances of  each item test that consisted of 50 items multiple choice. There were criteria of face validity, they were; (1) appropriatness of grammar, (2) the clarity and unambiguity of items, (3) the correct spelling of words, (4) the corret structuring the sentences, (5) the correct punctuation and lowercase/uppercase letters, and  (6) the used of constractions. In other word, the qualitative analysis needed to get to know which aspect has reconstruct.The result of qualitative analysis in face validity level revealed that quality of the test in term of face validity there were 24 items question (48%) categorized  have face validity and  there were 26 items question (52%) categorized mismacth with the criteria of face validity. Thereby, 26 items question did not match with the criteria of face validity. Thus, the items question need to reconstrct to make the improvement of  quality to each items question to match with the criteria of face validity.

Abstract

This research attempts to investigate the improving students’ vocabulary mastery by using English songs at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 2 Gunung Agung Tulang Bawang Barat. The method of this research was conducted by using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. The population of the research was 28 students. In this research, the writer took one class for the sample. The writer used observation and tests for the data collecting technique. The writer found that using English songs successfully improved students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from the result of vocabulary activity and mastery. It was increased, from cycle I to cycle II by using English songs. In cycle II, the writer used the same technique but added a few different changes related to the problem in cycle I. The writer found that the average score in cycle I was 54.71, and students who passed the minimum criteria mastery was 46.42% and it increased in cycle II, the average score in cycle II was 73.78, and students who passed the minimum criteria mastery was 75%. Therefore, it can be concluded that this technique was successfully applied in improving students’ vocabulary activity and mastery at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Gunung Agung Tulang Bawang Barat.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the similarities and the differences of Robert Frosts’ poems “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” and “The Sound of Trees” in terms of imagery and figurative language. The design of the study used a qualitative design with a descriptive semantic approach. Data analysis used descriptive and content analysis techniques. This study found that the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowing” contains two types of imagery namely visual and auditory and three types of figurative language namely metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. There are three types of imagery namely visual imagery, auditory imagery, and organic imagery, and four types of figurative languages namely   metaphor, simile, personification, and irony in the poem “The Sound of Trees”. Furthermore, the two poems have similarities and differences in terms of imagery and figurative language. Both of them have visual imagery and auditory imagery as well as metaphor and personification. Besides having similarities and differences in terms of imagery and figurative language, the two poems also have similarities and differences in terms of imagery characteristics. What the two poems have in common is that they both have the speaker I as a man, natural theme, and setting of the place, which is at home, even though the marker word for the imagery is different. Meanwhile, the difference lies in the listener, and the setting of the situation namely the listener of the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” which is the little horse and woods with a snow and the darkest evening setting. Meanwhile, the listener of the poem “The Sound of Trees” is the trees with a white cloud situation setting.

Abstract

This study researched the correlation between the students’ national English examination and their integrated intensive course (IIC) scores at English Department of Halu Oleo University academic year of 2016/2017. The national examination test determined the English score of students in senior high schools based on 3 language skills; reading, listening and writing, while IIC test determined the 4 language skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening as well as vocabulary and grammar. The difference of test score may raised score variations in which students who got good scores in national examination might got even worse score in IIC. Moreover, different types of tests, where some senior high schools that carry out national examination through paper based and some other through computer based test also may impact the result of the test. The researcher used product moment correlation to analysis the correlation both of the score. The result of hypothesis shows that there is a significant correlation between the students’ national English examination and their integrated intensive course (IIC) scores at English Department of Halu Oleo University academic year of 2016/2017. It was indicated by the result of analysis of r-product moment score (rxy = 0.309) which was higher than r-table = 0.199.

Abstract

This study is conducted to examine whether there is any significant effect of Free writing technique on students' writing skills at X MIPA 1 in SMAN 6 Kendari or not. This research was conducted in pre-experimental research design. The population of this research was all the first grade science program students (X MIPA) of SMAN 6 Kendari. The total of population was 207 students which consisted of 6 classes. The sample of this research was X MIPA 1 which consists of 35 students. The data of this research were collected by giving the students pre-test and post-test in the form of written test that related to the topic of Recount Text. Then, the data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0 version and used descriptive analysis and inferential statistics. For testing the hypothesis of this study, the researcher used paired sample t-test which was calculated by SPSS 17.0. The result shows that there is significant effect of free writing technique on students' writing skills. It can be seen from students’ developments in their writing on recount text. In the pre-test, students found it hard to write a recount text, while in the post-test after treatment, most students can write a recount text. In other words, H1 is accepted. It means that there is a significant effect of free writing technique on students' writing skills. Furthermore, the result of the finding above also shows that free writing technique can improve several things such as students' motivation and self-confidence.
