Abstract

Speaking is one of the speaking skills possessed by students. Speaking skills have been trained from an early age, but the results of speaking learning are still far applied. Many students still experience difficulties in learning to speak. such as shame, fear and anxiety and lack of confidence inhibiting learning factors in speaking to students lacking motivation, poor student learning habits, mastery of students' vocabulary is still low, as for student learning strategies are one aspect that determines the success of students in speaking, students can have student learning strategies by memorizing vocabulary, believing themselves and improving vocabulary pronunciation. This research was conducted to identify the difficulty of speaking in English faced by students and find out the strategies they used to overcome these difficulties. This researcher used a qualitative descriptive method involving as many as 17 students in grade 9 at 3 Medan Christian Middle School, research results this shows that students have difficulty speaking in English namely lack of grammatical understanding, lack of vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation of words fearing the response of others feeling nervous in making mistakes, lack of self-confidence and shame in the strategy that students do is asking help to others trying to compose sentences in different ways by using gestures, taking the rules in positive thinking, can be concluded that students have a sense of difficulty in speaking English.

Abstract

Folklore is a traditional story and plays an important role in teaching character of children because it is full of moral values. Folklore become a guide lines and also become a role model to behave well because in folklore there is an implied meaning containing advices and moral messages. The purpose of this study is to find out the moral values of folklore Tongkat Tunggal Panaluan and the importance of those values to build good character of children. This study is qualitative research design and data was collected from reading the folktale text repeatedly and then analyzed the data with content analysis.  The instruments of this research are  interview and documentation. The result of this study showed that there are four dominant values contain in folklore Tongkat Tunggal Panaluan include religious value, honesty value, responsibility value and social value that divided into two, helping each other and caring each other. From the research, the  researchers found that folklore of Tongkat Tunggal Panaluan had many moral massage which could teach  children’s character

Abstract

This study aims to examine the values of humanism contained in  Legend of Lau Kawar and how the process of applying the character values contained in Lau Kawar in the learning process. The values of humanism are the meanings contained in humanism in forming humans with integrity, having awareness, freedom, and responsibility as human nature. This study seeks to answer research questions; What are the character values found in Lau Kawar and how is the implementation of the character values found in Lau Kawar in the learning process. The object of this research is UPT SMP Negeri 21 Medan and the participants in this study were two informants from Lau Kawar village. This research shows that the vision and mission of the 2013 curriculum to shape students' character is not in accordance with reality. This research method uses qualitative methods with direct data collection. The current study concludes that there are several values of humanism in the Legend of Lau Kawar that can be implemented in the learning process to form good student characters, therefore the use of humanism values in the Legend of Lau Kawar must be taken into account by teachers and the school to shape characterstudents in accordance with the objectives of the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out what characters value can be used as a tool to build students' character and how to form the moral message in the film Ayah Mengapa Aku Berbeda. To reveal these objectives thoroughly and in depth, this study used descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques and the researchers showed the film Ayah MengapaAkuBerbeda which is done with data collection techniques by means of interviews, direct observation to schools and to several junior high school students.From the results of the analysis, it is known that the series of events that occurred was the suffering of a deaf girl who lived her life with passion, patience, hard work and her shortcomings were not an obstacle to achieving her goals and being pious person to her parents. The film Ayah Mengapa Aku Berbeda has many characters that can be constructive and can also be applied to students' lives. And from these results, it can be concluded that the research in the film contains several characters namely religious, tolerance, independence, hard work, curiosity, communicative, disciplined, likes to read, honest, creative, appreciates achievement, social care, is responsible for words, and not dependent on others.

Abstract

The researcher raised the fact that the Pakpak Bharat culture was not widely known as a research problem. This study tries to provide a solution to the problem through written analysis of Pakpak culture which is reflected in the Lae Une folklore. This research utilizes the descriptive qualitative method. Research data was obtained from informants who are natives. The researcher used interviews as a research instrument and then the data collected was analyzed using the content analysis method. The result of the research is the complete text of the Lae Une folklore and its cultural analysis. Researchers found the potential of culture in teaching in various related and unrelated fields in language, thus confirming the theoretical basis presented at the beginning of the study.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate Students’ Motivation and Perception in Reading English Texts. This study was conducted to find out (1) what intrinsic factors influence students' motivation to read English texts, (2)what extrinsic factors influence students' motivation to read English texts, (3)what differences exist in reading motivation among students of different demographic backgrounds and (4) how does motivation to read English texts vary across different age groups, gender, and socio-economic status. This study used descriptive qualitative as the research design. It was conducted to the students of SMK Telkom 2 Medan. After analyzing the data, it was found that students’ motivation and perception in reading English texts are influenced by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, educational environment, and personal attitudes towards reading. By understanding these factors, educators can implement strategies to enhance motivation and foster positive perceptions, ultimately improving students' reading skills and their overall learning experience

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh media buku cerita bergambar terhadap keterampilan membaca nyaring siswa kelas III SD Swasta Pangeran Antasari Helvetia Tahun Pelajaran 2023/2024. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian eksperimen dengan desain true experimental design. Pada desain penelitian ini terdapat dua kelompok yang digunakan untuk penelitian, satu kelompok untuk kelas eksperimen dan satu kelompok lagi untuk kelompok kelas. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas III A sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas III B sebagai kelas kontrol. Metode pengumpulan data yaitu menggunakan angket untuk mengetahui keterampilan membaca nyaring siswa. Data yang diperoleh kemudian dianalisis menggunakan Uji Independent Sample T Test memperoleh t = 6,058, df = 58, dan sig (2-tailed) = 0,000, nilai signifikansi (2-tailed) 0,000 < 0,05 maka ini menunjukkan hipotesis atau Ha diterima. uji F pada penelitian ini didapatkan nilai F hitung sebesar 36,698 dengan angka signifikansi (P value) sebesar 0,000 dengan tingkat signifikansi 95% (ɑ = 0,05). karena Fhitung > Ftabel, 36,698> 4,00 maka dapat ditentukan bahwa H0 akan ditolak dan Hɑ diterima, dapat dipahami bahwa ada pengaruh media buku cerita bergambar terhadap keterampilan membaca nyaring siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia siswa kelas III SD Swasta Pangeran Antasari tahun pelajaran 2023/2024.

Abstract

Pengembangan soft skills merupakan elemen penting dalam meningkatkan daya saing mahasiswa di dunia kerja. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memperkuat soft skills mahasiswa, khususnya dalam aspek manajemen waktu, komunikasi, dan kerja tim, melalui pelatihan berbasis manajemen dan pembelajaran kolaboratif. Program ini melibatkan 50 mahasiswa dari berbagai program studi di perguruan tinggi, yang mengikuti workshop selama tiga hari. Metode pelatihan mencakup simulasi, diskusi kelompok, dan studi kasus, dengan evaluasi dilakukan melalui pre-test, post-test, serta wawancara kualitatif. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada kemampuan manajemen waktu, komunikasi, dan kerja tim, dengan rata-rata skor post-test meningkat sebesar 30%. Temuan ini sejalan dengan teori Goleman (1998) mengenai kecerdasan emosional dan model Tuckman (1965) tentang dinamika kerja tim. Pelatihan ini terbukti efektif dalam mendukung pengembangan soft skills mahasiswa dan dapat diintegrasikan ke dalam kurikulum untuk dampak yang lebih berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Penguasaan bahasa Inggris menjadi salah satu kompetensi esensial bagi mahasiswa di era globalisasi, khususnya di bidang kesehatan, di mana kemampuan ini mendukung akses terhadap literatur internasional dan interaksi lintas budaya. Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris dan keterampilan pengembangan diri mahasiswa STIKES Columbia Asia Medan melalui pelatihan berbasis praktik dan kontekstual. Metode pelatihan meliputi pre-test, pelatihan intensif, dan post-test, yang dirancang untuk mengintegrasikan keterampilan bahasa Inggris dengan pengembangan soft skills, seperti komunikasi interpersonal, kerja tim, dan manajemen waktu. Pelatihan berlangsung selama empat hari dengan pendekatan interaktif, termasuk simulasi skenario profesional, latihan menulis akademik, dan diskusi kelompok. Hasil pelatihan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada kemampuan bahasa Inggris, kepercayaan diri, dan keterampilan soft skills mahasiswa, dengan rata-rata peningkatan skor post-test sebesar 30%. Program ini membuktikan efektivitas pendekatan berbasis praktik dalam menjawab kebutuhan spesifik mahasiswa kesehatan, sekaligus memberikan kontribusi nyata terhadap pengembangan kompetensi mereka untuk bersaing di dunia kerja global. Program ini diharapkan menjadi model untuk pelatihan serupa di institusi lain, sekaligus mendukung misi STIKES Columbia Asia Medan dalam menghasilkan lulusan yang kompeten secara akademik dan profesional.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze teachers' experiences in teaching reading comprehension in English classes at UPT SMP Negeri 10 Medan. This research employs a qualitative approach using interviews, observations, and a Likert-scale-based questionnaire to explore various aspects of reading comprehension instruction. The main focus of this study includes the strategies used by teachers, the effectiveness of learning media, student engagement in interactive activities, and the challenges faced in understanding reading texts. The findings indicate that teachers employ various strategies such as skimming and scanning, group discussions, and role-playing to enhance students' reading comprehension. The use of learning media such as videos, images, and mind mapping has been proven to help students better understand texts. Group discussions are also an effective method for improving reading skills, particularly in fostering a deeper understanding of texts. However, this study also reveals several challenges, including limited vocabulary, low reading interest, and difficulties in comprehending complex text structures. The implications of this study highlight the importance of utilizing diverse and innovative teaching methods to cater to students' needs. Additionally, vocabulary enrichment and the selection of reading materials relevant to students' lives can enhance their motivation and comprehension of English texts.
