Abstract

This study aims to understand how students perception Quizlet as a tool for learning English vocabulary. This researcher conducted this research at one of the junior high schools in West Cikarang, which consisted of three class VIII students. This research uses a qualitative descriptive design. In addition, the researcher collected data using interviews and questionnaires. Researchers conducted interviews via WhatsApp telephone. Questionnaires were distributed through WhatsApp groups and using a 5-point Likert scale. This study uses thematic analysis, which includes six steps. Familiarize yourself with the data and generate the initial code, search for topics, view topics, define and name data, and make a report are the six steps. The findings show that students' perceptions of using Quizlet show positive responses and feelings. Quizlet can make students feel happy and interested during learning. However, there are challenges in using Quizlet, about feeling challenged with each other during learning and the problem of internet connection that is not always stable.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at eleventh-grade students of SMAN 4 Kendari. This study was a quantitative pre-experimental method with one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample was students at XI IPA 1 class consisting of 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test which consisted of 19 items in essay forms. The finding of this study showed that there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students' higher-order thinking skills. It was proven by the increase in students’ mean scores from pretest to posttest. The mean score for the pretest was 58.69 and standard deviation of 9.558 and the post-test was 75.36 and a standard deviation of 8.232. It can be seen that students' higher-order thinking skills were improved after being taught by using Quora application. Furthermore, this study proved that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted with the value of Sig (2 tailed) 0.000 which was lower than the alpha value α (0.05) or sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at SMAN 4 Kendari.

Abstract

This research aimed to increase learning motivation and learning outcomes in English with cause and effect material by applying the quiz team learning method. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was carried out in two cycles with four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects in this study were students of class XI Social Sciences at SMA Negeri 1 Sawerigadi, West Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province in semester 1 of the 2017/2018 academic year which involved 22 students. The research objective was learning motivation and learning outcomes in English with cause and effect by applying the quiz team learning method. The research instrument was a written test. Data analysis used was descriptive analysis technique of comparison with percentage. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in learning motivation and English learning outcomes for students' cause and effect material seen from the average score. The average score of increasing learning motivation and learning outcomes in English for cause and effect material with the application of the Quiz Team learning method is shown in the pre-cycle the average value is 61.59, in the Cycle Iit increases to 71.36 and in the Cycle II it increases with an average score. 83.86 average. In terms of minimum completeness criteria (KKM) in pre-cycle students who achieve KKM are 45.45%. In the first cycle, it increases to 63.64% and in the Cycle II it increases to 86.36% while the percentage in learning motivation in the Cycle Iis 58, 52% increases to the Cycle II to 85.80%. The conclusion that can be drawn in this study is that the application of the Quiz Team learning method has increased students learning motivation and learning outcomes, so it is feasible to be applied in SMA Negeri 1 Sawerigadi.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the significant effect of Instagram in blended learning on students’ parts of speech achievement at the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Kendari. This study used pre-experimental design. The sample was the tenth graders of SMAN 2 Kendari in academic year 2019/2020 which consisted of 33 students. To collect the data, the researcher used grammar test about parts of speech. The data were analyzed using application of SPSS 16 version software. The result of this study showed that using Instagram in blended learning had significant effect on parts of speech achievement of the students at the tenth grade of SMAN 2 Kendari. It was indicated by the result of the statistical analysis where it was found that tcount (9.345) was higher than ttable (0.05) and probability value (0.00) was lower than ttable (0.05). As the result, it can be concluded that using Instagram in blended learning is effective on students’ parts of speech achievement at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 2 Kendari.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine students' engagement on Story Completion in speaking classrooms. The researcher conducted this research in a secondary school in Karawang, which consisted of four students from tenth-grade students. This research used a descriptive case study. The data was collected through interviews and questionnaires. Researchers conducted interviews via WhatsApp call. The questionnaire was distributed through Google Form and used a four-point Likert scale. This study used thematic analysis by Braun and Clark (2006), which includes six steps. It consists of familiarizing the data, generating initial code, searching for themes, reviewing the theme, defining and naming the data, and producing the report. The findings showed that students are positively engaged in emotional, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. In emotional engagement, most of the students gave a positive reaction. The students are enjoyable during the learning. Students showed their willingness to ask questions and do tasks in behavioral engagement. Students showed a high effort to learn in speaking class in cognitive engagement. However, there are obstacles in learning regarding the lack of vocabulary, so that some students find it difficult.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the types of plagiarism found in students Skripsi at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University, and to know the common factors that make students commit plagiarism. This research used descriptive qualitative research design and employed content analysis method. The researcher used 3 soft copies Skripsi of 2018 and 2020 of the graduated students and the interview result as the data sources. The instruments of this study were a checklist types of plagiarism adopted from KP Nasional (2014) and an interview guideline. In collecting and analysing the data, the researcher used a checklist that consisted of 1 to 5 types and the researcher would be giving the codes for every element that fulfil the criteria from Kementerian (2010) by manual checking using the help of Quetext software, and also used interview guideline to gain the data needed about the factors that make students commit plagiarism in their Skripsi. The results of this research show that: there are some types of plagiarism found in students Skripsi through first types (citing terms, words, or sentence of data and information from source) with a frequency of 11 paragraphs in entire students Skripsi, and the second types (randomly quoting terms, words, sentences or information from source) with a frequency of 6 paragraphs in entire students Skripsi, and third types through (using sources of ideas, opinions, or theories from original sources) with frequency 18 paragraphs in entire student Skripsi 3. There are several factors that make students commit plagiarism including friend’s relation, personal ability, technology support, and less understanding of knowledge from students. To conclude, it is clear that plagiarism of idea is the most dominant type of plagiarism found in students Skripsi at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the cognitive levels of English test questions designed by English teachers at SMAN 5 Kendari. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation and interviews as the instrument. The data analysis used in this study was a qualitative data analysis method, in which the results of the study were described descriptively. The item questions analyzed were a summative test used in the midterm exam and final exam at the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade of 2021/2022academic year. The analysis used Bloom's taxonomy revised by Anderson & Krathwol (2001). The results of the study showed that among 109 questions, there were 28 (25%) questions categorized as remembering level, 60 (55%) categorized as the understanding level, 5 (5%) categorized as applying level, 14 (13%) categorized as analyzing level, 1 (1%) questions categorized as evaluating level, and 3 (3%) questions categorized as creating level. Moreover, the results have obtained the percentage of LOTS, MOTS, and HOTS of English test questions as follows; 80% of questions categorized as LOTS, 4% of questions categorized as MOTS, and 16% of questions categorized as HOTS. Therefore, it can be concluded that the English test at SMAN 5 Kendari was dominated by lower-order thinking level questions.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether Moodle E-learning has a significant effect on students' writing achievement at SMAN 1 Kodeoha or not. This research used pre-experimental design. The population of this study were all of the X grade of math and science students. The sample of this research were 28 students at X MIPA 1 class which consisted of 12 females and 16 males. The sample taken by using random sampling. The instrument of this research was writing test and used five writing’s components of ESL composition rubric profile by Jacobs (1981) namely content, organization, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. To collect the data, the researcher giving pre-test, the treatment by using Moodle E-Learning and also giving post-test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS 20.0 version and used paired sample t-test to test the hypothesis of this study. The result of this study showed that students’ mean score were 64.58 at pre-test and 86.66 at post-test. As the result, the mean score of post - test was higher than in pre-test. Based on the calculation of t-test, it showed that the score of t- t-test = 14.424 was higher than t-table = 2.051 and the p-value = 0.000 was lower than = 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. This can be concluded that Moodle E-learning has a significant effect on students' writing achievement at SMAN 1 Kodeoha, Kolaka Utara. Therefore, in improving students writing competence, Moodle E-learning can be used as one of effective methods on upgrading students ‘writing achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ habits in listening to English songs and their listening achievement at the English Education Department of Halu Oleo University. This research was quantitative research and the design used correlational research designs. The population was all of the 2018 academic year students with a total of 128 students, and the sample of this research was 35 students of class A. This research used a questionnaire and students’ listening achievement scores as the instrument. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics through IBM SPSS 26 program. The findings of this research show that the majority of the students have habits of listening to English songs and most of them have good achievements in listening. After correlating them, it was found that the value of the correlation coefficient is 0.417 in the significant value of 0.013. From the sig-value seems that there is a significant correlation between the variables. The correlation-value shows that the correlation is positive in the moderate category. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ habits in listening to English songs and their listening achievement, and the correlation is categorized as a positive and moderate level of correlation.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the psychological problems faced by English Department students of Halu Oleo University in doing an oral presentation. This study employed a descriptive research design. The population was all students at the English Education Department of 2016, consisting of two classes, totalling 79 students. Then, the sample was the students of class B who were programming Speaking II, totalling 42 students using the purposive sampling technique. The researcher collected the data by using a close-ended questionnaire. The closed-ended questionnaire employed inferential statistics to find out the frequencies and percentages and then reported the statistical result followed by the conclusion. The result of this study showed that psychological factors were factors affecting the students psychologically in doing an oral presentation. They were fear of mistakes (42%), anxiety (42%), and lack of motivation (50%). Two factors did not correlate students in doing an oral presentation, namely feeling shy and lacking confidence. The rest three factors positively predicted the students’ ability to do oral presentations, such as fear of mistake, anxiety, and lack of motivation. Moreover, the ways to solve the psychological problems faced by the students in doing a presentation were giving motivation to the students and stimulation to practice in doing a presentation. Therefore, it could be concluded that fear of mistakes, anxiety, and lack of motivation were the psychological factors that affected the students in doing an oral presentation, and students’ problems could be solved by the lecturers.
