Abstract

Introduction: The Covid-19 pandemic caused educational institutions to temporarily suspend face-to-face classes. This led university lecturers to immediately shift to work from home mode in teaching students and collaborating with colleagues which made them adjust their work routine into online mode. Since this phenomenon entailed unique experiences based on the context of lecturer and students, this study aims to know the role of media and information communication technologies on the work from home experiences of a university lecturer during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: A case study of a university lecturer was conducted through a written interview. Questions that solicit information on feelings about working from home, descriptions of the tasks needed to do in a usual day of a lecturer working online, and challenges encountered in teaching during the pandemic. Codes, categories and themes were generated in the data analysis. Findings: Results reveal that home was perceived as a comfort zone for the university lecturer during the time of pandemic. The use of social media, email, and video conferencing platforms were based on three aspects: (1) the intention for communication; (2) the importance of materials involved, and (3) the assessment of fitness to work context.     Originality: This project provides understanding of lived experiences of a university lecturer during the Covid-19 pandemic and how technology plays a role in teaching and learning based on the context of their uses. The piece can be used as a scaffolding of future studies that intends to look at emerging relationships between humans and technology.

Abstract

Introduction: Datafication still plagues Indonesian journalists, especially local ones, skewing news validity and neutrality. Indonesian journalists from 13 local media were surveyed and interviewed for this study. This study relied on several studies that suggest journalists may deliver more accurate, objective, and unbiased news by expanding their datafication capacity. As digital technology advances and social media spreads misinformation, it becomes critical. Methods: Mixed-methods experimentation and triangulation. Indonesia has 13 native media representing its diversity. Using regional media, this study can illustrate data journalism literacy levels in different locations, including those with differing technology and education. We chose material based on data journalism approaches including data visualization, infographics, and data-driven reporting. This ensures study-relevant respondents. Findings: Indonesian media's poor data literacy has a big impact. Data-driven journalism in local media is poor due to data analysis incompetence. Access and chances for journalists to develop data skills are major issues. Clearly, formal training is needed. Another factor is local media's focus on reporting speed over data analysis. Lack of technology and institutional support hinders local journalist data literacy projects. Originality: Previous studies on Indonesian journalists' datafication knowledge and abilities are scarce and fragmented. Despite data journalism's growing popularity in newsrooms and academic status, comprehensive study is needed to define it.

Abstract

Introduction: The use of social media as a channel for political communication is becoming increasingly common in modern society. Some users seek virality to influence public opinion. Among them, some employ manipulative tactics to achieve virality, which can undermine deliberative democracy. Unfortunately, the impact of manipulative virality on deliberative democracy has not received sufficient attention. This study aims to describe how manipulative virality poses a threat to deliberative democracy. The researchers focus on five social media platforms--X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, because Indonesians widely use these for political communication. Methods: The researchers use a qualitative, exploratory approach, focusing on relevant documents using interpretive analysis and observation to study of X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. Findings: Research identifies four methods of manipulative virality that undermine deliberative democracy: using fake accounts, deploying bots, paying buzzers, and spreading hoaxes. These practices threaten and subvert deliberative democracy by creating false appearances of support, potentially distorting public opinion, misleading policymakers, and damaging society. Manipulative virality often benefits wealthy groups, as they can afford to pay buzzers and deploy bots, unlike poorer groups. Originality: This study explores the role of social media in public discourse to promote deliberative democracy. It offers novelty by presenting an in-depth analysis that digital media has the potential to undermine deliberative democracy due to the use of bots, fake accounts, and paid influencers. The findings emphasize the importance of preserving authentic public dialogue while addressing unethical practices that manipulate social media for personal or political gain.

Abstract

Introduction: There has been a notable rise in the popularity of K-pop endorsers within the landscape of Philippine advertising, influencing Filipino consumers' purchase intentions. Therefore, this study aims to examine the mediating effect of attitude toward a brand on the relationship between brand credibility, endorser credibility, and consumers' purchase intentions. Methods: The participants of the study were Filipino internet service subscribers, and they were selected using purposive sampling technique. The approach used in this study was quantitative research and causal-predictive approach while the partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to estimate the relationships of the proposed model. Findings: The results showed that an endorser's credibility significantly influences consumers’ purchase intention and attitude towards a brand. On the other hand, the relationship between brand credibility and purchase intention is not supported. However, there is a significant relationship between brand credibility and attitude towards a brand. The relationship between attitudes towards a brand and purchase intention is also supported. The mediation analysis revealed the importance of attitude towards a brand which tremendously mediates the relationship between brand credibility and endorser’s credibility leading to purchase intention. Originality: This study highlights the novel role of consumers' attitude as a mediator between endorser and brand credibility, shaping purchase intentions in the Philippine telecom industry through K-pop idol endorsements.

Abstract

Introduction: This article examined how internet regulations in Indonesia, specifically the Electronic Information and Transactions (EIT) Law, impacted freedom of expression in the digital space from 2008 to 2021. Methods: Qualitative research was conducted, employing a case study approach, utilizing literature studies and analyzing articles related to the EIT Law and freedom of expression violations. Findings: The study identified 371 instances where the EIT Law was used to prosecute individuals, often those exposing criminal activity online, highlighting a concerning trend of criminalizing victims. Articles 27, 28, and 29 were particularly problematic due to their ambiguity, creating opportunities to suppress online discourse. This analysis revealed a concerning pattern of the EIT Law being used to restrict digital freedom of expression and public participation, aligning with Althusser's (1970) concept of a repressive state apparatus. The research identified the government, entrepreneurs, and the police as the primary actors utilizing the EIT Law, often to the detriment of civil society members, reflecting the concept of hegemony. This study recommends further research into the EIT Law's impact on digital freedom of expression, focusing on the legislative process, the experiences of those affected by the law, and comparative analyses with other countries. Investigating the evolving landscape of digital rights about state control and corporate. Originality: This manuscript addressed a significant gap in existing literature by providing an in-depth analysis of the practical implications of Indonesia's Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE) Law on digital freedom of expression.

Abstract

Introduction: This article addressed the research problem: 'how the information and communication technology usage related to the poverty rate in Indonesia in 2020-2021, compared between provinces and rural-urban segmentation.’ This study contributed evidences for the development of digital literacy policies to answer previous research debates on the extent to which information and communication technology is a useful tool for reducing poverty, which is one of the Sustainable Development Goals. Methods: Using a quantitative approach, this study used the data from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. Data is analyzed using product moment correlation to determine the relationship between information and communication technology penetration and the poverty rate, the results then are displayed using quadrant mapping. Findings: This study found variations in relations between provinces and rural-urban segmentations. High internet penetration and media use are not always accompanied by a low poverty index. In conclusion, the expansion of internet needs to be complemented by massive and systematic digital literacy education in order to effectively accelerate poverty reduction. Originality: This study meets the need for novelty as the issue discussed is related to poverty and information and communication technology penetration using spatial analysis. The novelty can be seen from the result of bibliometric analysis.

Abstract

Introduction: The study investigates the indirect influence of satisfaction on the relationship between brand prestige and behavioral intentions. Methods: A total of 407 respondents participated in the study and they were customers of the leading café in the Philippines. Predictive-causal research design and structural equation modelling via partial least squares (PLS) were employed to measure the direct and indirect hypothesized relationships of the present study. Findings: The results revealed that brand prestige and customer satisfaction significantly and positively influence behavioral intentions. Furthermore, brand prestige was found to be significantly and directly related to customer satisfaction. The mediation analysis indicated that customer satisfaction indirectly affects the link between brand prestige and behavioral intentions. The intervening effect of customer satisfaction on the relationship between brand prestige and behavioral intentions proves that satisfaction is still a vital factor when it comes to favorable outcomes. The significant and positive influence of brand prestige on behavioral intentions is mediated by satisfaction of coffee shop or café customers. Therefore, when customers are satisfied, behavioral intentions among clientele, in particular, in the context coffee shops or café are reinforced. Originality: This study provides novel insights into how customer satisfaction mediates the relationship between brand prestige and behavioral intentions, offering valuable implications for enhancing customer-centric branding strategies in the café industry.

Abstract

Introduction: The culture of dating has changed a lot, and young people today are more interested in finding romantic partners through online dating sites. This study aims to describe interpersonal relationships that are formed through an online dating application called Tinder. Methods: This study used a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Three users of the online dating application Tinder, namely two men and one woman, were selected purposively as research informants. Data collection was carried out virtually using interview techniques and observation of informant conversations on the dating application. Meanwhile, in-depth interview data were only obtained from research informants who actively used the application. To reduce research bias, the researcher conducted further data exploration by extending the research time and recording and collecting verbal and nonverbal data virtually. The data obtained were analyzed using NVivo12 software. Findings: These findings suggest that communication security in daring relationships is a concern for Tinder users. Furthermore, the study found that self-disclosure does not always guarantee privacy security in online interpersonal relationships. This study proves that the theory of self-disclosure contradicts the assumption of self-disclosure and privacy. Originality: The novelty of this study is that it brings together the concept of communication security with social media studies. Many studies place the concept of self-disclosure in relation to interpersonal communication and are studied using a quantitative approach. Meanwhile, this study places self-disclosure within the framework of communication security studies with mixed methods.
