Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by uncontrolled blood sugar levels and is diagnosed using fasting blood glucose (FBG) measurements. Risk factors for T2DM include central obesity, measured by the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and poor sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between WHR and sleep quality with FBG levels in T2DM patients, by employing an observational study with a cross-sectional design A total of 51 respondents aged 45–75 years were selected using purposive sampling. Waist and hip circumference were measured with a metline; sleep quality was assessed using a Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and FBG levels were obtained from secondary data in the form of medical records at the Karangmalang Community Health Center. Spearman was used for the bivariate test, while the multiple linear regression was used for the multivariate test. The test results showed a significant relationship between WHR and FBG levels (p=0.001, r=0.460), and between sleep quality with FBG levels (p<0.001, r=0.553). Multivariate results obtained p=0.026 for sleep quality and p=0.093 for WHR, suggesting sleep quality is more strongly associated with FBG levels. Sleep quality was the dominant factor associated with FBG levels in T2DM patients. The results of this study can be used as a guideline for individuals with T2DM to maintain normal blood glucose levels and good sleep quality for better blood glucose control.

Abstract

Anemia remains a public health problem in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 23.7%. The government has implemented a prevention program by providing Iron–Folic Acid (IFA) supplements to adolescent girls and women of reproductive age, with coverage in DKI Jakarta reaching 63.5%. This study aimed to analyze the relationships among anemia knowledge, anemia perception, and teacher support with adherence to IFA consumption among adolescent girls. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 55 students aged 16–18 years from SMA Muhammadiyah 15 Jakarta who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires that assessed knowledge, perceptions, teacher support, and adherence to IFA. Adherence was measured using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Chi-square analysis showed that anemia perception was significantly associated with IFA adherence (p = 0.003; OR = 9.394), whereas anemia knowledge (p = 0.272) and teacher support (p = 1.000) were not. These findings indicate that anemia perception plays a key role in determining adherence to IFA, whereas knowledge and teacher support do not. Programs that enhance adolescents’ perception of anemia risk and consequences are needed to improve adherence. School-based education should be more engaging and relevant, and although teacher support was not significant, schools still play an important role in providing a supportive environment for implementing the IFA consumption program.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of E-Bukuku, a flipbook-based digital pocketbook on balanced nutrition, in improving nutrition knowledge among elementary school children. The study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design conducted at Purin Muhammadiyah Kendal Elementary School. A total of 162 students aged 7–9 years were selected using purposive sampling. The intervention was delivered through a structured nutrition education session. Students were guided by the researcher or classroom teacher to interactively explore the E-Bukuku flipbook through page navigation, illustrations, question-and-answer sessions, brief discussions, and practical examples to reinforce balanced nutrition messages. After the session, students were given time to independently review the material before completing the posttest using the same questionnaire as the pretest. Nutrition knowledge was measured using a structured questionnaire integrated with the E-Bukuku content. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, as the paired pretest and posttest data did not meet the normality assumption. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in nutrition knowledge following the intervention, with mean scores increasing from 55.30 ± 8.12 at pretest to 82.75 ± 6.45 at posttest (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the use of E-Bukuku significantly improved balanced nutrition knowledge among elementary school children. E-Bukuku can be considered an innovative digital-based nutrition education medium. This study provides preliminary evidence supporting the effectiveness of flipbook-based digital nutrition education and offers insights for future large-scale interventions.

Abstract

One of the most prevalent health problems in Indonesia is anemia, particularly among adolescent girls, where concerns about excessive weight gain may reduce adherence to iron supplementation. Spirulina is a potential alternative supplement rich in iron and nutrients that support hematopoiesis and may address these concerns. This study aimed to analyze the effect of spirulina supplementation on body weight in anemic adolescent female Wistar rats. This experimental study used 25 female Wistar rats divided into five groups: normal control (NC) received a standard BR diet, positive control (PC) received a low-iron diet to induce anemia, and three treatment groups received spirulina at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg body weight (T1–T3) for 21 days. Body weight was measured before anemia induction, after anemia induction, and following supplementation. The results showed a significant overall difference in body weight gain among the groups (p < 0.001), which was mainly driven by differences between the normal control and positive control groups. However, post hoc analysis indicated no significant differences in body weight gain between the positive control group and treatment groups 1, 2, and 3 (p > 0.05). Body weight in the treatment groups increased by 22.8–27 g, indicating recovery toward baseline values. Although these differences were not statistically significant, spirulina supplementation may contribute to anemia recovery, as reflected by improvements in body weight. In conclusion, spirulina shows potential as a nutritional supplementation strategy that does not induce excessive weight gain while supporting iron-related nutritional needs.

Abstract

Hypertension is a leading cause of mortality worldwide. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is a recommended nutritional intervention to help control blood pressure through sodium restriction and increased intake of potassium, fiber, fruits, and vegetables. This case report aimed to describe the implementation of a DASH diet intervention combined with nutrition education in a hypertensive patient. A 59-year-old female client with a history of hypertension and obesity (BMI 35.6 kg/m²) presented with a baseline blood pressure of 151/92 mmHg and an unbalanced dietary pattern. Nutritional assessment identified excessive energy and sodium intake, as well as inadequate fruit consumption. The intervention consisted of a hypocaloric DASH diet with a 500-kcal energy deficit and high-fiber menu modification, implemented over a short intervention period of five days, accompanied by nutrition education using leaflet media. Following the intervention, blood pressure decreased from 151/92 mmHg to 123/83 mmHg, while body weight slightly decreased from 84.4 kg to 84.1 kg. In addition, the nutrition knowledge score improved from 60 to 90. Although the intervention duration was short, these changes indicate a positive short-term response to the DASH diet and nutrition education. In conclusion, a short-term DASH diet intervention combined with nutrition education may provide preliminary benefits in improving blood pressure, dietary behavior, and nutrition knowledge in hypertensive patients. However, longer-term interventions are required to confirm sustained clinical effects.

Abstract

Malnutrition in early childhood can hinder children’s development and their potential in their upcoming productive ages. The prevalence of wasting among children under five in Indonesia was 7.4% in 2025. This study developed a complementary feeding product in the form of milk pudding with the addition of mung beans, soybeans, and red beans. The study aimed to analyze the protein content, protein digestibility, and acceptability of the legume-based milk pudding. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used, consisting of treatment groups with the addition of mung beans, soybeans, and red beans (F1, F2, F3) and a control group (FK). Each treatment group was replicated twice, resulting in a total of eight experimental units. The results showed that pudding F2, with the addition of 120 g mung beans, 60 g soybeans, and 120 g red beans, had the highest total protein content (2.80%) and a protein digestibility value of 61.86%. There was a significant difference among groups in total protein content (P = 0.002), but no significant difference in protein digestibility (P = 0.834). The highest acceptance value was found in pudding F3, with color, aroma, texture, and taste scores ranging from 3.13 to 3.80. There were no differences among groups in aroma, taste, and texture (P > 0.05), whereas color showed significant differences among treatment groups (P = 0.001). Milk pudding with mung beans, soybeans, and red beans can serve as an alternative local snack food, contributing approximately 12.25% to the daily protein requirements of toddlers.
