Abstract

The aim of this study was to test conceptual model that showed the role of life skills to mental health. Participants of this study was teachers (N=260) from various provinces in Indonesia who are following event by Diknas in Jakarta. Life skills was measured by Life Skills Scale that consist six life skill dimensions, while mental health was measured by the Life Satisfaction Scale and Quality of Life Scale. Those measurement model each variables was tested by measurement model of Structural Equation Model/SEM that produces the fit model (χ2=23.20; p>0:05 and χ2=11.54; p>0.05). Analysis using SEM showed that model has goodness fit indices (χ2=52.13 p>0.05). The role of life skills that includes six dimensions:emotional skills, social skills, self-esteem, communication, critical thinking and problem solving are able to predict individual mental health. These results provide strong support tothe activities of mental health improvement of individuals through life skills programs.

Abstract

Abstract

The new paradigm of learning has placed the students to participate actively in the learning process. One of the consequence is that the learning process must use the variative methods, not only about the transfer of knowledge from teacher to students. This research isaimed to test the impact of Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) to the achievement of Psychology Faculty students in learning Statistics. It is assumesed that the numerical abilityhas a positive correlation to the achievement in studying statistics. So, the respondents numerical ability variabel is controlled using statistics. This research used experiment with Alternative Treatment Posttest Only With Nonequivalent Group Design. Cluster sampling was used to get two of four parallel classes ofStatistics. One class was used randomly as the class taught using TAI and the other class as the control group using conventional teaching method. The numerical ability of the twogroups was tested before getting a different treatment. The teaching with different method was conducted in five sessions. The numerical ability of respondents was tested after the treatment given to the two groups. The mid semester test score of the two groups were compared to the one way covariance analysis with the numerical ability as the covariable. The results indicates that Fscore of the the two groups 10.459, p<0.01. Residual Mean of study achievement for experiment group = 6.997 and control group = 5.464. The result indicates the significant correlation between the numericalal ability and study achievement in statistics (F regression = 43.483, p<0.01 and partial eta squared = 0.316).It can be concluded that there is a significant difference of achievement in studying statistics between the group of students who was taught with Team Assisted Individualizationand with conventional teaching method. The group of students who was taught with Team Assisted Individualization has higher mean score compared to the group taught using the conventional method.

The stressfulevents can cause negative of cognitive and emotional responses to college students. Therefore, it can cause depression on college student self. This research aims to test the effect writingabout emotional experiences therapy on reducing depression for the first year college students. Research design uses two matched groups design. Subjects (N=12) were divided intoexperimental group (n=6) or control group (n=6). The experimental group was instructed to write about emotional experiences in four writing sessions lasting ± 30 minutes. Outcomeswere measured at pretest, posttest, and follow up by Mixed ANOVA Design. Between Group ANOVA indicated the groups differed significantly on depression (F=25.88, p=.001). WithinGroup ANOVA indicated that experimental group reported significantly reduced depression at pretest, posttest, and follow up (F=33.72, p=.001). Post hoc test revealed that the repeatexperimental group reported significantly reduced depression at pretest-posttest (p=.003), posttest-follow up (p>0,33), and pretest-follow up (p<0,01). This result indicated that writingabout emotional experience therapy can reduce depression for first year college students.

“Maido” is a peculiar term within Javanese language which meaning is so unique that it has no perfect translation to Indonesian language. It has a mix meaning of denial, rejection, apathetic, or put others down. However, on the positive side, “maido” could mean as an attitude of critical thinking. This study aims to uncover the position of “maido” withinJavanese culture, whether it is one of the local wisdom which supposed to be positive or is it a “cultural accident” that need to be reconsidered. In general the purpose of this study is to understand the meaning and the origin of “maido” attitude within Javanese people. By knowing that, it is expected that the academiciancould treat it proportionally as a part of the psychology of Javanese culture. The method applied to this study is phenomenology as a qualitative approach. Respondents of the studyconsist of the experts of Javanese culture and observers of the culture. The result shows that “maido” does not have a central position in Javanese culture, and the positive meaning is fading away. Abstract

Handwriting is a point to be scored in evaluating students’ achievement. For the elementary school students still learning to write this matter should not be ignored particularly in the Bahasa Indonesia subject. Cursive writing is to be mastered when a student enters his third grade and such writing would be useful until adulthood. However, this type of writing is found difficult to many students, even to those of the higher level education. The purpose of the present research is to explore psychological abilities of children with illegible handwriting that the basic problem of such children can be identified. The subjects were 3 third-grade students whose handwriting were rated as illegible by some teachers, and 1 student whose handwriting was not rated asillegible as a comparison. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and the Bender-Gestalt test were administered. The data of WISC then were presented in profiles of some cognitive abilities. Indications of brain injury and emotional disturbance could be derived from the Bender-Gestalt test. The profile of each subject showed that there is no specific tendency of cognitive abilities, and no indication of brain injury and emotional disturbance. It is concluded that the illegibility of the subjects’ handwriting is merely the case of motor skill. The illegibility of handwriting has nothing to explain the students’ academic achievement since their academic achievements, except for one subjectwhose intelligence is below average, are satisfying.

Abstract

Child sexual abuse is a worldwide problem. Although most studies on the longterm consequences of child sexual abuse have focused on women, sexual abuse of both boys and girls is common. Peer sexual abuse in schools was an often overlooked problem that contributes to a hostile school environment: one major study found that 85% of girls and 76% of boys reported experiencing some form of sexual abuse in school. 85% of child sexual abuse is committed by relatives, close family friend or an adult that the child knows and trusts. The childhood sexual abuse variables taken into account are commonly age of onset, duration, abuse forms and relationship between the child and the perpetrator. The objective of this study was to gather information or opinion about sexual abuse concept, methods and media of the elementary students, parents, teachers and experts. A qualitative study, involving one to one interviews, was conducted with 7 experts, focus group discussion with 40 elementary students, and with 40 parents in Yogyakarta district about child sexual abuse issues. Data were analysed according to Miles and Huberman’s data reduction, data display and conclusion verification process. These findings strongly indicate that boys and girls are vulnerable to this form of childhood sexual abuse ; the similarity in the likelihood for multiple behavioral, mental and social outcomes among men and women suggest the need to identify and treat all adults affected by child sexual abuse. Themes related to the child sexual abuse were: paperwork design, good facilitator, guidelines for students, parents and teachers. Students prefer media that can help them understand concept with komik paperwork as media for early prevention. Parents, teachers and experts prefer that this prevention program can run as soon. With careful paperwork design and evaluation of prevention program, the success of program implementation can be enhanced.
