Abstract

This research entitled "Myth Bunut Bolong Bolong in Manggissari Village Pekutatan Subdistrict Analysis of Structure and Meaning". Bunut Bolong myth in Manggissari Village Pekutatan District, analyzed by structural theory and semiotic theory. This study aims to describe the narrative structure found in the myth of bunut hole, and analyze the structure and meaning contained in the myth of bunut hole, Phase of data provision used method refer to assisted with technique note. It also used interview method assisted by recording technique and record technique, that is noting important things obtained from interview result. Furthermore, in the stage of data analysis used qualitative methods. In this stage also supported by analytic descriptive technique. At the presentation stage of data analysis, the method used is the informal method. Narrative structure that builds the myth of bunut hole in Manggissari Village, Pekutatan Sub-District there are five, that is incident, plot,Top of Form character, theme and background. On the myth of bunut hole there are events outside of reason happen, in the form of prohibitions or regulations that if violated will happen bad things. Meanings contained in the myth of bunut hole, namely (1) meaning tri hita karana, (2) religious meaning, and (3) the meaning of the ban.

Abstract

This study is entitled “Figurative Language in Westlife Album “Coast to Coast” and My Chemical Romance Album ‘Welcome to Black Parade”. The problems formulated in this study are the types of figurative language employed in Westlife’s and My Chemical Romance’s song lyrics and to find out how is the meaning of figurative language contrasted with its lexical meaning. There were five songs of Westlife chosen to be the source of first data, namely; Againts All Odds, I Lay My Love on You, My Love, What Makes a Man, and When You’re Looking Like That and five songs of My Chemical Romance also chosen to be the source of second data, namely; I Don’t Love You, The Sharpest Live, This How I Disappear, MAMA, and Welcome to Black Parade. The data were collected using documentation method then they were analyzed through qualitative method. After the data were analyzed and discussed, it was found that there were seven kinds of figure of speech employed in all the ten song lyrics; they were Simile, Personification, Hyperbole, Metonymy, Irony, Metaphor and Paradox. And then we find out the meaning of figurative language contrasted with its lexical meaning

Abstract

Subaya Village is the one of the Desa Bali Aga which is located in Kitamani, Bangli district. This village is still retaining the traditional culture which is given by their ancestors. “Naur Kelaci” is the strict regulation of the marriage for Desa Subaya people. It is held on every purnamaning sasih kasa. The poeple believe on sasihkasa to pay the kelaci, based on their reliance that sasihkasa is the best day in paying the kelaci. Naur Kelaci is the one of the last chain from the wedding ceremony of the people who had been married. Hence, based on the understanding, the problem of this research is stated as the following (1) How is the procces of the NaurKelaci in Desa Subaya? (2) What is the function of Naur Kelaci in the wedding ceremony in Desa Subaya?The proccess of NaurKelaci ceremony could be analyzed by the religious theory, while thefunction, is analyzed by the theory of fuctional structural, and simbolic interaction. NaurKelaci tradition andn wedding ceremony is the concept used in this reserach. This research used ethnography reserach method which is categorized as a qualitative research. In order to get the data, interviewing the participants was conducted. The result of this study shows that the ceremony of Naur Kelaci is purposed to avoid the doom in life especially in the family, and it is the way to purify themselves from the negativety, at once also for the village itself from the dirtiness.

Abstract

This study entitled “Verbal and Visual Sign of the Greenpeace Advertisement” is intended to identify the verbal and visual sign presented in Greenpeace advertisement, to find out the messages conveyed in Greenpeace advertisement, and to analyze the relations between verbal and visual signs in Greenpeace advertisement. The data in this study were taken from three Greenpeace advertisements inadso ftheworld.com. This study was using documenting method to collect the data and qualitative method to analyze the data. The data were analyzed based on the theory proposed by Barthes as cited in MacEachren (1995), in the two systems of signification which formulates that a sign is a system consisting of expression (E) which relates (relation –R-) to the content (C), the theory proposed by Leech (1972) which focuses on the standard component of press advertisement, and the theory proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1985) in the three features of context of situation. The result of analysis shows that the verbal signs appear as the texts, words, or sentences in the advertisement. On the other hand, visual signs appear as a picture on the advertisement for the message conveyed can be seen from the denotative and connotative meaning of the advertisements. Therefore, verbal and visual advertisements support one another in presenting the message of the advertisement itself.

Abstract

The study is entitled Verbal and Non-Verbal Signs of “Moana” Movie Posters. This study focused on the analysis of verbal and non-verbal signs of “Moana” movie poster and the meaning of those signs. It was aimed at identifying the verbal and non-verbal signs found in “Moana” movie posters. It was also aimed at explaining the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in those movie posters. The data of this study were taken from the websites namely www.impawards.com. The data were collected using the documentation method. Then, the collected data were qualitatively and descriptively analyzed based on the theories applied in this study, namely the theories of semiotics proposed by Saussure, theory of verbal and non-verbal signs proposed by Dyer, and supported with the theory of color terms proposed by Wierzbicka, and theory of color meaning proposed by Eisman. The result of analysis shows that “Moana” movie posters have verbal and non-verbal signs. The verbal signs are “Disney”, “Moana”, “Sing with Moana!”, “Sing-Along”, “Special Sing-Along Engagement”, “January 27th in Select Theatres Nationwide”, “Soundtrack Available Now”, “From the Creators of Zootopia and Frozen”, “November 23”, “In 3D and Real D 3D”, “The Ocean is Calling”, Dwayne Johnson as Maui”, and “Auli’i Cravalho as Moana”. Those verbal signs provide the information about the title, release date, movie quality, the information of actor and actress as voices over, the information about the soundtrack of the movie, as well as company and creator that produced the movie. Then, the non-verbal signs consist of shape, appearance, manner activity, background, and color.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out lexical and structural ambiguity which occurs in the articles and explaining the causal factors in each ambiguity. The data in this study were taken from nineteen articles in The Jakarta Post daily newspaper from edition November 14 to November 25, 2017. Recording method and note taking technique were applied in this study for collecting the data. Meanwhile, the data were analyzed using qualitative method. Ulmann’s theories that involved kinds of ambiguity and the causal factors of ambiguity, by using Macmillan Dictionary to find the definition of each word in lexical ambiguity and labeled and bracketed sentences/phrases proposed by Yule were used to analyze the data. The result of the analysis shows that there were 20 ambiguous words, phrases or/and sentences found in nineteen articles in The Jakarta Post. There were 8 cases of lexical ambiguities and 12 cases of structural ambiguities. The result of this study shows the causal factors of each ambiguity as well, there were 8 lexical ambiguities caused by polysemy and 12 structural ambiguities caused by equivocal phrasing.

Abstract

This study entitled “The Structure of Jay Gatsby’s Personality in The Great Gatsby Novel” is aimed to describe Jay Gatsby’s structure of personality and his behavioral representations. The data were taken from the novelThe Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Qualitative method was applied to analyze Jay Gatsby’s structure of personality and his behavioral representations. The theories used to analyzed are the theory of literature proposed by Kenney, theory of psychoanalysis and theory of anxiety proposed by Freud. The theory of literature showed that The Great Gatsby used mixed plot and in order to reveal the character of Jay Gatsby, mixing method was used.The psychoanalysis theory showed three structures of personality of human minds: the id, the ego, and the superego. The behavioral representations of the structure of personality showed in anxiety and defense mechanism of the ego: repression, fixation, and regression. The result of analysis showed that the desire of human beings must not be negative and must be realistic otherwise it will effect his/her behavior and how he/sheis treated in society.

Abstract

The study entitled "Mixed Language Usage Code In This Show Talkshow on Net Tv". There are three problems analyzed in this study, namely the types of code mix, mix language code language and the syntactic categories, and the factors that cause mixed code. The purpose of this study is to describe the types and mixed-code factors contained in the It Talkshow show on Net Tv. To achieve that goal used several methods and techniques. First, the process of collecting data using the method refer, which is assisted with techniques libat libat ably and technique record. Second, the process of data analysis used qualitative descriptive method and the method of agih, which is assisted by techniques of lesap. Third, the presentation of data analysis result is used informal method. The population in this study was 120 videos that aired from January to June 2016 downloaded from the youtube site. Sampling was done by quota sampling with 30 video samples. This research uses the theory developed by Fishman (1971), Jendra (2007), Chaer and Agustin (2010), and Chaer (2014). Based on the analysis that has been done in this show Talkshow on Net Tv, obtained results (1) types of mixed codes found, ie mixed into the code comes from Sundanese, Java, Batak, Betawi, and Bali. The mixed code comes from English and Arabic, and mixed mixed code comes from Sundanese and English; (2) mixed code based on the linguistic level found in the form of clause level, the phrase level is divided into the endocentric phrase and the exocentric phrase, the word level is divided into two, ie the word and the word back, and the syntactic categories found in the form of noun category, verb category, category adjectives, and pronoun categories; and (3) the factors behind the code mix are influenced by participants' speech factor, language factor, and factor of purpose of conversation.

Abstract

This paper is entitled “The Analysis Code Switching Found in The Novel “Critical Eleven”. The aims of this study are to describe the types, function and to the analyse reasons of code switching used by the novelist. The data in this study were taken from all chapters of the novel entitled “Critical Eleven”by Ika Natassa. Firstly, the code switching that occurs in novel were identified and then they were classified and analyzed based on their types, function, and reasons of code switching. The collected data were analyzed using three theories; first the theory by Poplack as the main theory used in this study; this theory was used to analyze the three types of code swtching, they are: Tag Switching, Inter-Sentental Switching, Intra-Sentential Switching. The second theory proposed by Apple and Muyken was used to anlyze the function of code switching. They divided the functions into six categories, which are: Referential Function, Directive Function, Expressive Function, Phatic Function, Metalinguistic Function, Poetic Function. The theory proposed by Grosjean was used to analyze the reason of code switching. There are ten reasons of code switching; they are: To Fill A Linguistic Need For Lexical Item, Set Phrase, Discouse Marker Or Sentence Filler,To Continue Last Language Used (Triggering}, To Qoute Someone, To Emphasize, To Spesify Speaket Addressee, To Qualify Message: Amplify Or Emphasize, To Specify Speaker Involvement, To Mark And Emphasize Group Identity (Solidarity), To Convey Confidentially, Anger, Annoyance, To Exclude Someone From Conversation, To Change Role Of Speaker: Rise Status, Add Authority, Show Expertise.But from the six functions of code switching applied, there are only five functions of code switching found in the novel; they are Referential Function, Expressive Function, Phatic Function, Metalinguistic Function And Poetic Function. And based on the reasons of code switching, there were only seven which were found in the novel”Critical Eleven”; they are To Fill A Linguistic Need For Lexical Item, To Continue The Last Language Used (Triggering), To Quote Someone, Specify Addressee, To Specify Speaker Involvement, To Mark And Emphasize Group Identify (Solidarity) And To Convey Confidentially, Anger, And Annoyance.

Abstract

The title of this paper is Conflicts in Condon’s Movie “Beauty and the Beast 2017”. It is aimed at finding out kinds of conflict faced by the main character and the sources of the main character’s conflict, and analyzing the way the main characters solve the conflict. The data of this study were taken from a movie entitled “Beauty and the Beast 2017”. This study focuses on describing external and internal conflicts. The conflict is analyzed based on the theory of conflict proposed by Kenney who divides conflicts into two types, external and internal conflicts. The description of the presentation of the characters is analyzed based on the theory proposed by Deetz & Stevenson who divides it into two, those are the source of conflict and resolution of conflict. The result of this study shows that the main character faces two conflicts; external and internal conflict. The sources of the main character’s conflict are incompatible goals, and different opinions. In managing the conflict, the main character uses avoidance strategy, competition strategy and pacification.
