Abstract

This study investigates the integration of Eco-English Language Teaching (Eco-ELT) within the English study program curriculum through the ADDIE instructional design model. The primary objective is to develop and evaluate English teaching materials that enhance both language proficiency and environmental awareness among students. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study follows the ADDIE model's five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Data were collected via observations, interviews, and document analysis to assess the effectiveness of the Eco-ELT materials. Findings reveal that incorporating Eco-ELT significantly improves students' engagement, English language skills, and environmental consciousness. The study also highlights challenges, such as the need for comprehensive teacher training and resource constraints. The research underscores Eco-ELT as a promising approach for integrating environmental education into language teaching, with implications for English teaching material development and further exploration of sustainable educational practices.

The study entitled An Analysis of Translation Techniques Found In “Wish” Movie. The study aims to observe the types of translation techniques that are used and which types are dominant in this movie. The data were obtained by descriptive qualitative method and the data was analyzed based on the theory by Molina & Albir (2002). The researcher found adaptation (8,5%), amplification (0,5%), borrowing (2,6%), calque (1,3%), Compensation (0,1%), Established equivalent (0,7%), Generalization (0,8%), Linguistic compression (2,4%), Literal translation (74,4%), Modulation (1,7%), particularization (0,1%), reduction (6,1%), substitution (0,5%), transposition (0,1%), and variation (0,4%). Therefore, the dominant translation technique used in the movie "Wish" is literal translation. Literal translation is more likely to be used in subtitling because it keeps the original dialog faithful. Literal translation allows the audience to understand what was said in the source language.

Abstract

Story Mapping is a visual technique that helps students understand and organize information in descriptive text, improves reading comprehension, writing skills, and student engagement, but faces challenges such as variations in student abilities, time constraints, technological constraints, the crucial role of teachers, and the need for feedback and effective evaluation. The aim of this research is to determine students' perceptions of the use of story mapping in reading comprehension of descriptive text. The research used a qualitative approach to explore the perceptions of seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Krembung Sidoarjo regarding the use of story maps in improving reading comprehension. The results of the research include: (1) Students' perceptions of the use of Story Mapping in reading comprehension of descriptive text are generally positive, because it helps visualize and organize information, although some students face challenges in its implementation; (2) The advantages of using Story Mapping for students' reading comprehension in the classroom include facilitating visual comprehension, increasing information retention, making it easier to organize information, helping in-depth analysis, and encouraging active student involvement; and (3) Difficulties in using Story Mapping for students' reading comprehension in the classroom including limited vocabulary, complexity of digital design, challenges in interpreting visualizations, incompatibility with individual learning styles, and difficulties in organizing information systematically.

Abstract

This study examines the use of grammatical cohesion elements in oral narratives on podcasts, focusing on their contribution to the cohesiveness of oral discourse. This study focuses on its contribution to the cohesion of spoken discourse. It aims to identify and analyze the distribution of cohesion elements-reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis-in the UR Cristiano. The analysis of the data shows that reference is the most frequently used cohesion element, accounting for 59% of the total occurrences, indicating its dominant role in connecting parts of the narrative and clarifying the flow of the conversation. Conjunctions followed with a significant percentage of 21%, assisting in the logical progression of ideas. Substitution and ellipsis appear with lower frequency, at 5% and 15% respectively, but still contribute by reducing repetition and enriching text variety. The findings highlight the multiple functions of grammatical cohesion elements in constructing cohesive oral narratives. This research provides insight into the structural strategies used in podcast discourse and confirms the importance of cohesion in easing listeners' understanding. Abstract

This study examines translation shifts in public signs at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, applying Catford's category shifts (1965). It emphasizes the importance of maintaining both semantic meaning and stylistic elements during the translation process between the source language (SL) and the target language (TL). The research identifies four distinct types of category shifts: structure, unit, class, and intra-system. Data were gathered through observations of 52 public signs. The findings reveal that structure shifts are the most prevalent, accounting for 52% of the identified shifts, followed by unit shifts at 28%, class shifts at 16%, and intra-system shifts at 4%. These results highlight the necessity for structural adaptations to ensure effective translation in public signage. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of employing diverse translation techniques to facilitate clear communication in an international airport environment.

Abstract

This article explores Fyodor Dostoevsky’s White Nights through the lens of Marianne Hirsch’s concept of post-memory, revealing how inherited trauma and societal alienation shape the novella’s protagonist. Set in 19th-century St. Petersburg, a city emblematic of Russia’s conflicting forces of modernization and tradition, White Nights presents a narrator isolated both by his introspective nature and by broader social conditions. Through a post-memory perspective, this analysis investigates the protagonist’s emotional detachment, romantic idealization, and eventual disillusionment, linking them to generational trauma and the archetype of the Russian “superfluous man.” The protagonist’s unrequited love for Nastenka is not merely a romantic fixation but a symptom of his inherited emotional burdens, reflecting how individuals inherit unresolved traumas and memories from previous generations, which shape their identities and interactions. The article further examines Dostoevsky’s critical portrayal of the Romantic “dreamer,” contrasting idealism with the grim realities of the city’s alienated inhabitants. Ultimately, this reading of White Nights highlights the novella’s enduring relevance, as Dostoevsky probes the complexities of memory, trauma, and the individual’s place within society, resonating with modern themes of inherited psychological and social dislocation.
