Abstract

Digital storytelling merges traditional storytelling with digital media, creating short films that blend photos, text, video clips, animations, and music using computer-based tools. This narrative research study examines the experiences of students utilizing digital storytelling to enhance their English learning journey. Employing qualitative methods and narrative inquiry, the study conducted semi-structured interviews with a fourth-semester student from the English Letters Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The narrative inquiry ensured accurate and consistent data recording. The findings highlight the participant’s early exposure to English through songs and movies, which laid a foundational understanding of the language. The study reveals that digital storytelling is a multifaceted learning medium. The participant engaged with English content on platforms like the BBC website, significantly improving his language skills. Creating his own digital stories further honed his speaking, listening, vocabulary, and writing abilities. Crafting scripts for digital storytelling particularly advanced his creative storytelling skills. Moreover, the study sheds light on the participant’s challenges and successes with digital storytelling. One notable challenge was understanding native speakers’ speech, which differed from the non-native speaker's pronunciation typically taught in schools. However, the interactive nature of digital storytelling provided an engaging and effective way to enhance language skills, surpassing traditional learning methods.

Abstract

Abstract This study is based on the linguistic expressions used by (NH) addressed to (NA) which allegedly contain insult-type hate speech on Instagram. These linguistic expressions were brought into the legal domain and reported to the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations, Sub-Directorate V of Cybercrime, Regional Police of South Sulawesi and categorized as a complaint-based offense. This study employs forensic linguistic investigation with the support of cognitive linguistics, aiming to analyze the framing, perspectives, and mental spaces within the linguistic expressions of the reported party (NH) and to determine whether these expressions constitute hate speech in the form of insults. This is a descriptive qualitative study using secondary data obtained from Evidence (E) and Investigation and Interrogation Reports from investigators at the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigations (Ditreskrimsus) of the Regional Police of South Sulawesi, Makassar City. This study reveals six types of frames used by NH to insult NA, including the frame of Islam, sin, prostitute, insult, threat, and insinuation. Based on perspective analysis, three viewpoints were identified: the perspective of the reported party (NH), the complainant (NA), and the investigators (police). The reported party (NH) engaged in hate speech in the form of insults by utilizing perspectives based on identity (religious and personal identity), accusations, and comparisons. Mental space analysis was conducted on four linguistic expressions, yielding two concepts from the blending of mental spaces: the concept of a prostitute and the concept of contradiction. Based on these analyses along with the utterances of seven pieces of evidence with (14) linguistic expressions, it is concluded that the linguistic expressions used by (NH) against (NA) have been proven to violate the Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE) Law Article 27 Paragraph (3) of 2016 and the Indonesian Criminal Code on defamation, Articles 310 and 311. Keywords: frame, perspective, mental space, humiliation, forensic linguistic

The document method is used to collect data, qualitative analysis to identify the dominant types of suffixes and their context of use, while quantitative analysis to determine the frequency of suffix usage. These methods provide a comprehensive understanding of noun-forming suffixes, taking into account meaning and accurate data. This research used the theory proposed by Hamawand (2011) and the supporting theory from Lieber (2009). A total of 221 data of noun-forming suffixes were found, with 156 (70%) verbal root data, 46 (21%) adjective root data, and 19 (8%) nominal base data. The analysis shows that verbal root suffix is the most common type of noun-forming suffix found in football news. The dominance is because of the use of verbs that describe an activity or action in the match involving the team or players in the match. Although verbal root only has five suffixes, but it dominates in football news texts.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to describe the relationship between learning motivation (LM) and self-efficacy (SE) in English learning outcomes for EFL learners. LM and SE have significantly related to EFL learners’ learning outcomes. However, there is a need to thoroughly examine learning outcomes in language learning, particularly considering variations in students’ LM. This study aims to conduct a meta-analysis of correlation studies to evaluate the interaction of LM and SE on EFL students' learning outcomes. The evidence for the relationship between LM and SE in EFL students was analyzed using a meta-analysis. The study found that a random model was utilized, and the magnitude of the effect was exceptionally great (d.0576). The meta-analysis computed 11 effects, and the variable analysis moderator examined the study's source, sample size, student major, language learning target, educational level, and instrument type.

Therefore, this study tries to find what presentation skills should be prioritized in English learning. To respond to the problem, a survey was conducted by distributing a questionnaire to 149 university students from the Informatics department. The result showed that the top 5 most difficult aspects are engaging the interest of the audience, speaking clearly/pronunciation, handling the audience questions, getting the timing right, and putting thoughts/ideas into speech. In terms of the skill dimension, verbal and nonverbal communication is considered the most difficult. This finding should be taken into account when designing English learning activities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the English research article written by Korean authors as one fruitful genre of academic discourse. It highlights how the discourse elements reflect Korean academic writing culture. This study employed a qualitative method with genre-based discourse analysis. The researchers chose one qualified research article on ELT written by Korean authors from a reputable journal. The article was analyzed in two layers: generic structure and rhetorical structure. The results showed that the writing of the Korean article uses the IMRaD as the international standard of research reports. The results also suggest that Korean academic writing places a strong emphasis on empirical evidence and formal language to ensure clarity, objectivity, and professionalism. Understanding these generic and rhetorical structures is essential for both writers and readers in the academic community, as it provides insight into how knowledge is communicated and legitimized in Korean education.
