Abstract

This research explores the use of figurative language in William Shakespeare's sonnets through an analysis. In this study, there is a comprehensive analysis of six selected sonnets, namely: Sonnet 127, Sonnet 130, Sonnet 131, Sonnet 132, Sonnet 133, and Sonnet 139. The purpose of this study is to explore how figurative language is used in William Shakespeare's sonnets by using Perrine's theory and to reveal the techniques used by Shakespeare to enrich his poems. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, identifying and categorizing 53 examples of figurative language in the selected sonnets. The technique of data collection is by reading the sonnets thoroughly, noting in detail the figurative language present and connecting with the theory. Ten of Perrine's twelve theories were found, namely simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, symbol, hyperbole, irony, paradox, and apostrophe. The findings of this study show the dominant use of metaphor and personification, complemented using synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, and other devices. The way Shakespeare uses figurative language makes his poems seem more vivid and evokes deep emotions, especially for the readers. Shakespeare's poetry and figurative language have an enduring power in literature and offer valuable insights to be analyzed more deeply.

This research aimed to investigate the perceptions of the third-year students of the English Department Universitas Riau in using the Webtoon application to enrich English vocabulary. This research used a quantitative descriptive method approach and involved 30 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were gathered via a Likert-scale-based questionnaire distributed via WhatsApp. The findings showed a generally positive perception among students concerning the Webtoon application's usefulness, ease of use, and attitude toward using. This can be seen from the questionnaire's mean score, which reached 4.04, involving perceived usefulness (3.87), perceived ease of use (4.15), and attitude towards using (4.10). This research also found that most Webtoon application users are females, who tend to have more positive perceptions than males. In addition, students who used the free version and those who spent more time using the application showed better perceptions of vocabulary enrichment than those who used the paid version. In conclusion, third-year students of the English Department Universitas Riau positively perceive using the Webtoon application for vocabulary enrichment. Abstract

This research investigates the types of conflict the protagonist faces in the movie “Wonka.” The collected data were adopted a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the external conflicts identified in the “Wonka” movie. Kenney’s literary theory (1966) was employed to understand the nature of the conflicts, and Thomas and Kilmann’s framework (1974) was utilized to explore the characters’ conflict resolution strategies. The results of this study indicate that the protagonist’s challenges predominantly involve external conflicts. Kenney (1966:19), in his work “How to Analyze Fiction,” defines conflict as a struggle between a principal character and another entity. External conflicts can manifest as man versus man, man versus nature, or man versus society. A total of ten instances of conflict were identified, comprising four instances of man versus man, five instances of man versus society, and one instance of man versus nature. However, this analysis will focus on three specific conflicts. Keywords: External Conflict, Main Character, Movie.

The researcher found that there was a significant difference between students’ mean scores in the pre-test and post-test. The students’ mean score in the pre-test was 55.68 while, students’ mean score in the post-test was 82.44. besides that, based on the result of paired sample t-test shown that sig (2-tailed) ˂ α (0.000 ˂ 0.05) means that there is a significant difference between learning outcomes in pre-test and post-test data. Hence, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. It can be concluded that the concept of project-based learning applied through video vlog design at tenth grade had an effective impact on increasing students’ vocabulary master and also utilising project-based learning in the form of making videos can build collaboration and raise communication between students with the groups formed.

Abstract

Abstract Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have opened up new opportunities in various fields, one of which is journalism. In the rapidly developing digital era, the use of AI in the media production process, including news writing, is becoming increasingly relevant. This research aims to analyze the use of ChatGPT, an AI-based language model, in automating news text writing. This model is capable of processing and generating text automatically, which can speed up and simplify journalists' tasks in producing news content. The method used in this research is a case study with a qualitative descriptive approach to explore more deeply the role and contribution of ChatGPT in news writing. The research results show that ChatGPT can help increase speed and efficiency in the news writing process. This model can organize news structures systematically, provide editing suggestions, and produce text with a neater flow. However, there are several challenges that need to be considered, such as the accuracy of the information produced, potential algorithm bias, and limitations in understanding more complex contexts. ChatGPT, although advanced, still has limitations in dealing with issues that require in-depth reasoning or richer substantive interpretation. The implications of this research provide broader insight into the potential and limitations of using AI to support modern journalism practices, as well as opening further discussions regarding ethics and responsibility in the use of this technology. Apart from that, the results of this research can also be used in learning to write news in high school to improve students' skills in understanding effective journalistic structure and language.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the use of metaphors in the conventional language employed by Indonesian food vloggers when describing food, claiming it as a form of linguistic creativity influenced by their cognitive capabilities. Creativity in language is a gift that humans inherently possess, enabling them to freely communicate, share information, and convey intentions. This premise is grounded in the claim that humans cognitively possess mental faculties allowing for unrestricted language production (Saeed, 2003). Traditionally, metaphors are understood as a literary style often used in poetry, novels, or drama. However, in reality, humans are inseparable from metaphors (Lakoff in Lakoff and Johnson, 2003). Cognitively, humans use metaphors to facilitate understanding by associating one term with another in language (Lakoff in Jackendoff and Aaron, 1991). The data source for this research comprises several videos from Indonesian food vloggers, including 4 videos each from Anak Kuliner, Boengkoes Network, Mamank Kuliner, and Nex Carlos. These vloggers are well-known in Indonesia with a substantial number of subscribers. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, which allows for a comprehensive explanation of phenomena observed in the data. The analysis reveals that in describing food, food vloggers tend to use structural metaphors more frequently than other types of metaphors, with 26 occurrences recorded. This finding indicates that equating the domain of food taste with another domain structurally makes it easier to convey and understand abstract taste experiences through the shared experiences of vloggers and their audiences

Abstract

The skill of writing narrative texts is still very low and difficult for most students of SMPN 1 Kuala Batee. The objectives of this study are 1) to find out the level of students' ability in writing narrative texts, 2) to find out the causes that make their scores low in writing narrative texts. This study uses quantitative research. The subjects of the study were 98 students. The test is used as a data collection technique. The results of the study show that, there are 81 students who could not write narrative texts at all or were included in the Very Poor category, 6 students who got a category with a score range of 70-79. There are 4 students who are included in the Excellent category with the highest score of 95. Then, 2 students were included in the Poor category and 5 students were included in the Very Poor category. Among the 98 students, only 17 students took the narrative text writing test. And among the 17 students, only 59% (10 students) were able to do it. The cause of students' low scores in writing narrative texts was found to be not mastering English vocabulary which led them not participating in the survey. Also, limited knowledge in identifying the general structure and language of narrative text features was also a cause to students’ low achievement in writing narrative text.
