Abstract

One of the skills that 21st-century human resources must have is the capacity for critical thinking. The capacity for critical thinking is the capacity for thoughtful decision-making and problem-solving. This study aims to illustrate how students in the English Language Education Study Program use critical thinking to analyze literary works in the form of digital short tales. The quantitative descriptive approach was employed in this study. 33 students in semester IV were the focus of this study. 6 descriptive questions that were created based on critical thinking skill indicators from Facione (2015) and verified by professionals were used as part of the data collecting approach. The results of the research demonstrated that when examining literary works in the format of digital short tales, self-regulation is a sign of mastery in critical thinking abilities, whereas inference is a sign of difficulty. According to the proportion of students who met the very critical thinking criterion, 21% of students think critically, 27% think less critically, and 43% think very less critically. Of the students, 9% met the very critical thinking criteria. The average score that was earned altogether was 51.1. Consequently, it is evident that the fourth semester English language education study program students' critical thinking abilities fall into the less critical category at Khairun University.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the outlining strategy in teaching descriptive text writing to seventh-grade students, within the context of English language learning at MTsN 8 Kediri. With the challenge of mastering productive skills such as writing in a second language, this research identifies the need for engaging and systematic instructional strategies to facilitate students' learning process. A quasi-experimental design involving 55 seventh graders was employed, comparing the outcomes of an experimental group taught using the outlining strategy against a control group utilizing mind mapping techniques. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test measures and analyzed using ANCOVA in SPSS 25. Results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group's writing skills, with mean scores rising from 48.57 to 82.75, compared to the control group's increase from 48.22 to 81.37. Furthermore, ANCOVA results confirmed the outlining strategy's effectiveness with a value of p=0.009 (p < α 0.05). The study's findings align with Vygotsky's theory on the development of written language, highlighting the outlining strategy's role in enhancing cognitive development through internal organization of thoughts (inner speech), utilization of socio-cultural tools, and operation within the learners' Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). These outcomes underscore the importance of structured, supportive instructional strategies in teaching practices, illuminating the outlining strategy's potential to improve written language acquisition among junior high school students significantly

Abstract

This study explores the factors influencing incidental vocabulary acquisition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on the personal narratives and learning processes of three EFL students enrolled in a talent scouting program. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, allowing for an in-depth exploration of individual strategies and challenges in vocabulary acquisition. Key factors identified include media and entertainment, social interactions, and classroom experiences, particularly in reading and listening contexts. Participants expressed a strong preference for incidental learning over explicit instruction, finding it more natural and contextually meaningful. However, challenges in retaining newly acquired vocabulary highlighted the need for reinforcement strategies, such as note-taking and repeated exposure, to ensure long-term retention. The study concludes that while incidental learning is beneficial, it should be complemented by deliberate strategies to maximize vocabulary retention and application in real-world situations. By integrating various learning contexts, EFL students can achieve enriched vocabulary and greater fluency in English, ultimately enhancing their confidence in using the language.
