Abstract

The purpose of this study was to prove whether the use of extensive reading strategies improves reading comprehension of eighth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pagimana. This study applied a pre-experimental design. The population of this study was eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pagimana. The sample in this study consisted of 30 students. Data were collected through multiple choice and comprehension questions, to collect data the researcher gave a pre-test and post-test to compare students' achievement in reading comprehension before and after the extensive reading strategy treatment was carried out in the reading process. The researcher used the SPSS 27 program to analyze the data to determine whether there was an effect on students' reading comprehension after the extensive reading strategy was implemented in the learning process, which finally found the value of Z = -2.534 and Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) = 0.011. And because, the value of Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) <0.05 then, it can be concluded that the hypothesis is accepted. That means that the reading comprehension of eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Pagimana can be improved by using extensive reading strategies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine students' ability to understand narrative text at SMPN 2 Susoh. This research used a quantitative research design with the research subject of 68 eighth graders by using a written test. The descriptive analysis indicated that the majority of the students are in the poor category. The findings suggest that limited vocabulary acquisition was a critical factor contributing to their poor performance, as many students struggled to engage with the test material effectively. This lack of vocabulary affected not only their ability to complete the test but also their overall comprehension of the narrative text. Based on the result, this study highlights the urgent need for educational strategies aimed at improving vocabulary acquisition among students at SMPN 2 Susoh. By addressing this deficiency, educators can help students develop better reading comprehension skills, which will ultimately improve their academic performance in english narrative texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using TikTok as a learning medium on students' English language skills in higher education. Using a quantitative approach and descriptive-correlational survey design, data was collected from 124 active university students from various study programs who use TikTok in their English learning process. The instrument used was a closed-ended questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale, which measured the intensity of TikTok use (X) and English language skills (Y), including vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency. The statistical analysis showed a very strong correlation between TikTok usage and English language skills, with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.935. The R Square value of 0.875 indicates that 87.5% of the variability of English skills can be explained by the use of TikTok, while the remaining 12.5% is influenced by other factors. Each one-unit increase in TikTok usage increased English skills by 0.861 units (p < 0.001). The findings suggest that TikTok can be an effective learning media in improving English language skills, especially in vocabulary and listening skills. The practical implication is that educators can utilize this digital platform to support more contextualized and engaging learning.

Abstract

This research examines how well eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Sigi improve their reading comprehension skills through Project-Based Learning (PjBL). Reading comprehension is one of the most important skills for students learning English as a foreign language (EFL). However, the lack of vocabulary, low motivation, and inefficient teaching strategies cause problems for many students. PjBL is used as a student-centered learning strategy to address this issue. This research applied a quasi-experimental approach, with a control group learning conventionally and an experimental group using PjBL. Pre-tests and post-tests were used to gather information about students' reading comprehension development. The average score of the experimental group increased from 34.37 to 49.28, showing a substantial improvement, while the control group increased from 35.82 to 46.38. A p-value of 0.001, which is less than 0.05, was obtained through statistical analysis using an independent sample T-test, indicating that the improvement in the experimental group is statistically significant. This study shows that PjBL can improve students' reading comprehension by encouraging active learning, collaboration, and critical thinking. Based on this, the researchers recommend applying PjBL in English language teaching to create a more engaging and meaningful learning experience. Abstract

This study examines the translation of religious terms in The Alchemist from English to Indonesian, focusing on the translation procedures applied to these terms. This is a qualitative descriptive study that uses The Alchemist as the primary data source, both in its original English version and Indonesian translation. This research is conducted with two main objectives: (1) to identify the religious terms present in the original English version of The Alchemist, and (2) to examine the translation strategies used to convey these religious terms into Indonesian and evaluate how well the translations maintain the original meaning of the religious terms. Data were collected using document analysis to identify religious terms and analyze how they are translated. Using Peter Newmark’s translation theory, this study shows the eight translation procedures applied in translating religious terms, including through-translation, naturalization, cultural equivalence, functional equivalent, transference, shift or transpositions, synonymy, and recognized translation. A total of 28 religious terms were found, covering references to Islam, Christianity/Catholicism, Judaism, and general or multiple religious concepts. By applying Peter Newmark’s translation procedures, this study explores how translators maintain the essence of religious texts while adapting them to the target audience’s cultural background, contributing to the study of religious term translation.

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of English Education students regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Writing. Utilizing a qualitative research design, the investigation was conducted through semi-structured interviews by FGD (Focus Group Discussion) and questionnaires among students from the English Education Department at University “A” in Banyuwangi, East Java. Findings reveal that AI considerably enhances students’ efficiency and writing quality by offering tools that assist with grammar correction, reference finding, and generating ideas. The results of the survey indicate that ChatGPT is the most popular platform, with over 90% of students using it to produce writing assignments. Students reported improved confidence in their writing, attributing these advancements to AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Gama. However, concerns regarding the potential misuse of AI, such as plagiarism and over-reliance were also highlighted. The study underscores the necessity for digital literacy in effectively integrating AI into academic practices. Overall, the findings suggest that while AI significantly supports academic writing, its ethical usage is crucial to maintaining academic integrity.
