Abstract

This study investigates the differences between slang and register as forms of language used within communities. Register is language tied to specific groups, interests, or situations. Slang, a part of vocabulary, often reflects age and marks informal communication, particularly among younger generations (Holmes, 2013). This research employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology to identify, evaluate, and interpret existing research results. Data were drawn from two studies on slang and register. The research reveals that slang is characterized by trendy, sometimes ungrammatical, vocabulary used primarily by youth in informal settings. Register, while also occasionally deviating from standard grammar, uses vocabulary tied to specific situations and occupations

Abstract

Register variation, a central concept in sociolinguistics, refers to how language adapts to specific social and situational contexts. This study investigates register as it operates in live European football commentary, a high-intensity communicative environment where language must perform multiple simultaneous functions. Drawing on register theory, the research employs a descriptive qualitative method to analyze transcribed commentary from major football matches broadcast on official platforms. The data were coded and interpreted using a framework focused on lexical choice, syntactic structure, tonal modulation, and rhythmic delivery. The findings reveal that football commentators employ a fluid, adaptive register marked by idiomatic expressions, clause fragmentation, evaluative and rhetorical tone, and dynamic pacing. These features serve both narrative and affective purposes, enhancing audience engagement and constructing shared emotional experiences. The study contributes to sociolinguistic theory by situating register within live, performative media discourse, offering insights into how language functions as social action in real-time contexts. The implications extend to sports media, discourse analysis, and broader media linguistics, where understanding register can inform training, content design, and cross-cultural communication strategies.

Abstract

The prominence of English as a global lingua franca has posed challenges to the preservation of local languages, including the Luwu language in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. As an essential part of cultural identity, the Luwu language is increasingly marginalized due to the dominance of Bahasa Indonesia and English in formal education. This study examines the challenges faced by English teachers in balancing global linguistic demands with preserving the Luwu language. Using Fishman’s Language Shift and Maintenance and Hornberger’s Continua of Biliteracy as frameworks, this research explores the experiences, perceptions, and strategies of two English teachers in Luwu. The study, conducted through semi-structured interviews, reveals significant challenges, including limited institutional support, a curriculum prioritizing global languages, and the impact of digital media that diminishes students’ exposure to the Luwu language. Teachers employ strategies like integrating Luwu vocabulary into English lessons, fostering both cultural awareness and biliteracy. However, these efforts are constrained by a lack of professional development, resources, and formal guidelines for incorporating local languages into teaching. The findings underscore the importance of institutional and policy support in sustaining local languages. While Indonesia’s muatan lokal policy provides a framework for regional language inclusion, inconsistent implementation and resource gaps hinder its effectiveness. This study advocates for enhanced collaboration among schools, local governments, and communities to develop sustainable language preservation programs. By addressing these challenges, the Luwu language can remain a vital aspect of cultural heritage and identity, ensuring its continuity for future generations.

Abstract

This study analyzes the English research article written by Korean authors as one fruitful genre of academic discourse. It highlights how the discourse elements reflect Korean academic writing culture. This study employed a qualitative method with genre-based discourse analysis. The researchers chose one qualified research article on ELT written by Korean authors from a reputable journal. The article was analyzed in two layers: generic structure and rhetorical structure. The results showed that the writing of the Korean article uses the IMRaD as the international standard of research reports. The results also suggest that Korean academic writing places a strong emphasis on empirical evidence and formal language to ensure clarity, objectivity, and professionalism. Understanding these generic and rhetorical structures is essential for both writers and readers in the academic community, as it provides insight into how knowledge is communicated and legitimized in Korean education.

Abstract

This article examines pronunciation errors made by several prominent public figures in Indonesia on YouTube. Many Indonesians hold the belief that since they live in Indonesia, proper pronunciation is not a priority. Unfortunately, this leads to a lack of awareness about the importance of correct pronunciation and spelling. Often, learners focus on grammar and vocabulary acquisition when learning a foreign language, while neglecting pronunciation. As a result, most English learners excel in listening and reading, but struggle with speaking accurately. The study aims to explore the variations in English pronunciation by well-known individuals in Indonesia, specifically Prabowo Subianto, Prilly Latuconsina, and Cania Citta. The objectives are to identify common issues with English vowel and consonant pronunciation and to uncover the reasons behind these errors. The subjects of the study were Prabowo Subianto, Prilly Latuconsina, and Cania Citta. The researcher carefully watched YouTube videos featuring these individuals, analyzed their speech, and produced phonetic transcriptions. Error analysis was employed to evaluate the data, focusing on three areas: transcription of the subjects' pronunciation, difficulties with short vowels, and difficulties with long vowels.
