Abstract

Generally, English has been taught in Indonesia for ages, yet it is still accounted as a great barrier for Indonesian people. They often faced the necessity of good English proficiency in many areas, such as school or even the workplace, proven in such a certification. TOEFL is one of the most commonly known certification providers, yet many students reported having difficulties in reaching a certain score, especially in the structure and written expression section. This is a pre-experimental study with a one-group pre-post-test design in an effort to improve structure using the TOEFL Test Pro application. The population sample of this study was 104, with 78 respondents using probability sampling under some inclusion criteria. The data collection was done by using an assessment format and an interview, which were then analyzed by using t-tests and paired t-tests. The results show that there were significant differences in the students pre- and post-test scores with a significant value of 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, the use of TOEFL Test Pro enhances students' structure and written expression scores.

Abstract

Memes as an entertainment media have become a way to communicate with people of this era as a way to deliver a message or to retell the events of today or the past. The Among Us is one amongst many memes existed on the internet, once starting of as a small community exclusive to enthusiasts to something that ordinary people can enjoy whether it is from things that relate to them as of playing the game or something sensational that spreads into everyday objects, thus created subgenre “Among Us Look Alike”. The method chosen for this research is descriptive qualitative with an addition of parts needed to construct the meme. The researcher uses Roland Barthes’ theory to analyze the data. The researcher also explained the Denotative and Connotative meaning in the Among Us Look Alike meme. The researchers selected two memes for this analysis in Among Us memes based on the appearance of the Among Us character in the image. The result show that the Denotative meaning of the data are what to be expected from the object itself, and Connotative meaning of the data are varied and explained deeper into the context, such as the first data explaining the office culture and speculate on where the image is happening to how the image with the context presented to be in an office culture preceded the Among Us games by few months and the second data explaining the post-apocalyptic event and how the trace of Among Us character survived due to its material and how it shares the same material as the currency of the post-apocalyptic zone of “Fallout” game. The data showed that the images have both Denotative which is the literal description of the object and Connotative which range from just knowing the basic context of the meme, which is to know what parts needed to manifest the figure into deeper subjective meaning of the image.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating artificial intelligence (AI)-based English learning with students' character development, particularly in narrative text writing. AI tools such as Grammarly, QuillBot, and ProWritingAid are used to support this learning process. The research focuses on analyzing the impact of technology integration on students' academic achievement and character building of responsibility, creativity, and confidence. The study used an experimental design involving two groups, namely experimental and control. The experimental group received AI tools-based learning for six sessions, with each tool being used in turn to improve students' narrative texts. Data was collected through tests to evaluate students' writing skills, questionnaires to measure character development, and observation sheets to monitor students' interactions during learning. Data was analyzed using paired T-test and independent T-test techniques to compare the results between experimental and control groups. The results showed that the use of AI tools had a significant impact on students' character development, especially in the aspects of responsibility, creativity, and self-confidence, based on questionnaire and observation data. However, the impact on academic achievement was not significant within the limited duration of the study. This finding confirms that the integration of AI-based technology can effectively support character learning, although optimization for academic improvement requires time and a more comprehensive strategy. The integration of technology with appropriate pedagogical approaches provides opportunities for holistic language learning.

Abstract

This research analyzes the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness in Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil. This research aims to identify the stereotypes of beauty and ugliness constructed through the characterization of the two main characters, Sophie and Agatha, as well as how the novel challenges and reconstructs traditional expectations of beauty and ugliness. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analysis methods, this research identifies narrative elements that reinforce and challenge these stereotypes. The research results show that beauty is often associated with good, while ugliness is associated with evil. Sophie, who is described as very physically beautiful, was initially considered good, but later developed into a character full of selfishness. Agatha, who is perceived as ugly, actually displays kindness and strong morality. The novel The School For Good and Evil subverts the traditional stereotype, showing that physical appearance does not always reflect a person's morality. This research uses the theories of Janice Radway and John Cawelti. Radway explains that beauty is often associated with the role of the female hero, while Cawelti discusses the balance between convention and invention in popular works. This research identifies beauty not only through outer beauty such as physical appearance but also inner beauty. Good deeds such as defending, forgiving, helping, giving, and loving are the essence of goodness. With the meaning that inner beauty involves honesty, sincerity, and good deeds that reflect the values of true goodness.

Abstract

This study will seek to find out the effectiveness of the immersive English environment in the Bidan Dormitory in developing the language and speaking confidence of EFL learners. In this research study, qualitative data collection methods were employed through diary entries of the students, observation, and interviews with the camp supervisor. The results of the study showed that continuous exposure to English, peer interaction, and structured activities facilitated linguistic proficiency and confidence. At first, the students were battling with fear, embarrassment, and a limited vocabulary due to the strict English-only rule; however, their skills improved significantly through consistent practice supported by operant conditioning principles of rewards and penalties. According to Vygotsky's Social Constructivism Theory, peer interaction and supportive community created a collaborative learning atmosphere, while some structured activities such as Morning Class and Camp Night Party aligned with Long's Interaction Hypothesis, offering active participation opportunities despite additional support needs for lower-achieving students. This immersive environment integrates the behaviorist, interactionist, and constructivist approaches to language learning so well that it highlights a number of tailored interventions, such as study clubs and personalized mentoring, that may be required to support less confident learners. The paper also confirms the potential of an immersive setting in second language acquisition and recommends that future research investigate how such settings might respond to the diverse needs of learners.

Abstract

This research examines the contextualization of the concept of nusyūz in marriage law in Indonesia and the implications for its resolution regarding the act of beating through a discourse analysis approach. The main focus of the research is to analyze how the interpretation and application of the concept of nusyūz originating from Islamic law is adapted in the context of modern Indonesian marriage law, especially regarding the "beating" solution mentioned in classical texts. Using critical discourse analysis methods, this research explores how discourse about nusyūz is formed and interpreted in various legal texts, fiqh literature, and judicial practices in Indonesia. The research results show a shift in the interpretation of the nusyūz concept from a textual to a contextual understanding that is more in line with the principles of gender equality and human rights. Research finds that "beating" solutions need to be recontextualized with more constructive approaches such as mediation and marriage counseling. These findings contribute to the development of Indonesian marriage laws that are more gender
