Abstract

When communicating with others, people may be unable to distinguish between speaker and hearer, yet the dialogue can continue. As a result, a pragmatic role is required. Nonetheless, many pragmatic examples may fail for various reasons, including cross-cultural comprehension and even grammatical form misinterpretation. This situation occurs not just in real life but also in the classroom. This essay aims to examine the pragmatics of English students' dialogue in speaking class. The conversation in speaking class begins with a definition of the Pragmatic and Speech Act and Pragmatic Failures. It will be followed by examining several pragmatic failure dialogues in an EFL speaking class. According to this study, there are ten pragmatic failure discussions. The researchers discovered the following situations based on those conversations: first, there are different types of speech acts in English students' conversations in the speaking class, such as directive, assertive, and proclamation, which are all based on Levinson's theory. Furthermore, pragmatic failure occurs in English students' conversations in speaking class and is referred to as pragmalinguistics failure.

Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that structural metaphor is the dominant type of metaphor that the song writer used to write the lyrics. It is suggested that next researchers who are interested in metaphor need to deepen the analysis because the use of unique choice of word and changing through times will provide new results.

Abstract

During an online learning environment, students organize and develop their ideas in writing using Google Docs, and they hold their online consultation through the comment section. The research aims to explore students’ perspectives towards Google Docs in writing classes. A survey method using a quantitative approach was employed to collect data for this research. The researcher composed a questionnaire consisting of 17 questions and an interview as the instrument of this research to explore EFL students’ perspectives regarding Google Docs and distributed it to 24 students in a Seminar on ELT D of the English Language Education Program at Universitas Brawijaya. After processing the findings of the questionnaire using SPSS ver. 25.0, the researcher found that the students of the Seminar on ELT D project had a positive perspective towards Google Docs in writing class. As an alternate writing tool in online learning, Google Docs can be useful to students. However, students prefer using face-to-face for consultation or employing synchronous learning, such as video conferencing, to assist students in better grasping how to develop and arrange their thoughts.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to expand on the use of experiential learning in students' reading comprehension. The method used in this study is called a "pre experiment." Pre-test, treatment, and post-test are all included in it. The purpose of the initial pretest was to learn more about the audience before they read. Treatment is the implementation of the experiential learning theory in the learning to learn program, which is done roughly three times. The purpose of the final posttest is to understand how students learn after being instructed using the experiential learning theory. Matriculants in the second semester of the STKIP Kie Raha Ternate English language program for the academic year 2020–2021 make up the majority of this study. Population: 172 students. The research was applied purposive sampling technique. It is meant that the researchers choose one class which consists of 30 students. The result can be reported that the students’ achievement in reading in pretest was classified as poor (X1 = 5,3)  and the students’ achievement in reading posttest was classified as good score were (X2 = 7.83 ). For the level of significance (P) = 0,05 and degree of freedom (df) = N – 1 (29), then the value of t-table (25.3 > 2.045). It means that, there was significant difference between the pretest and posttest score of the students’ reading comprehension by Experiential learning theory. In other words, the Null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. From the analysis above, the researchers concluded that there was significance different between the score that got by students in pretest and posttest in learning reading comprehension by Experiential learning theory.

Abstract

Hedges are linguistics features that were previously considered by some researchers as the characterization of women's speech to show hesitation and uncertainty of the speech regarding the character of discussion and the sensitivity of the questions. However, this claim was remain debatable by another researcher since the use of hedges cannot be correlated to any specific gender. This study was conducted to reveal the use of hedges can also be employed by males in an informal daily conversation, discussing lights topic and questions that often appear. The conducted study was supported by the transcription from the recorded online meeting with males native and non-native English speakers. The transcribed recorded online meeting was useful to examine the hedges as the participants' expressions in the discussion. The results of the study showed that males also utilized hedges in an informal discussion, and the most frequent one is verbal filler will. The hedges uttered by both males native and non-native were various such as to give them chance to think, to reduce the impact delivered, self-disclosure, and appraise someone's idea. The findings also found that the use of hedges by males in casual daily conversation is normal, in regard to saving the speaker's name toward the interlocutor when discussing a sensitive topic or answering a sensitive question.

Abstract

A conversation is not all about a social activity that involves two people or more who chatter on anything. It has been regulated in the basic principles of spoken language in linguistics. The approach to analyzing the rules of interactive spoken language is mainly attached to the scope of conversation analysis which is commonly known as turn-taking. This research presents the appliance of turn-taking strategies and the patterns of turn-in-talk on THE BOYZ podcast conducted by bilingual speakers, which refers to the theory from Sacks et al. (1974). Furthermore, this study aims to identify the implication of language alternation usage by bilingual speakers in the conversation using the bilingual communication theory proposed by Mahecha and Auer (1986). The data are collectively derived from the utterances of the interview session transcribed on the DIVE Studios Podcasts' YouTube channel. The results revealed the parties on the podcast are more likely to use adjacency pairs among the types of turn-taking strategies and self-selection distribution of turn-allocation in the entire conversation. A genuine intent by bilingual speakers to shift the language within the discussion is to create an apparent approval or agreement and validation.

Abstract

Language skills are extremely crucial to grasp in order to face the progress of time. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language and has become part of the school curriculum, from elementary school to university. Parents are their children's first educators, and children grow and develop best in their families. As a result, whether directly or indirectly, the existence of the family has an impact on the learning achievement of children. The purpose of this study was to know and explain the relationship between students’ socio-economic status and their English achievement in the 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Makassar. The sample for this study consists of 29 students from class A. The information came from a questionnaire about the students' SES, as well as information from the English teacher about students' English achievement and English scores on the odd semester final test. Both of the data sets were calculated with Person Product Moment Correlation in SPSS Program Version 23. Referring to the research question, the result shows that there was a positive significance correlation between students’ socio-economic status (X) and their English achievement (Y). It was found that the correlation value was equal to 0,535, which means the correlation between two variables is moderate (0.40–0.599), it is included in the third category. As the findings showed, rxy>rtable= 0.535 > 0.367. Therefore, it can be concluded that the students’ higher SES had an influence on how their achievement will be measured. For future researchers, the research should be done (if using the same method) with some improvements, such as the type of the questionnaire, number of samples, previous studies, etc. This is expected to show more clearly and comprehensibly the relationship between students’ socio-economic status and their learning achievement
