Abstract

Repetition plays an important role in an essay because it functions to connect one proposition to another in an essay. However, junior high school students as writers are still often found using repetition markers that do not show a clear function as a means of affirmation and their appearance in student essays tend to be boring for readers. This study aims to identify and explore the form of using repetition as a marker of propositional relations in junior high school students' essays. This research uses a qualitative approach and is categorized into the type of discourse analysis research. This study involved 94 eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Balikpapan as research subjects. The data in this study were collected using a technique as proposed by (Sudaryanto, 2015), namely the simak-catat technique and interview technique. The data analysis of this research consisted of three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of repetition that are utilized as a means to link one proposition to another in the research subject's essay, namely exactly the same repetition, repetition with shapeshifting, and repetition with a partial disappearance. Among the three categories, exactly the same repetition is dominantly used so that it becomes the hallmark of the research subject's essay. The repetition of elements of the proposition that is repeated is also found in the essay of the research subject, causing boredom or redundancy. The findings of this study have an important contribution for teachers and education practitioners to optimize the literacy culture and students' critical thinking so that they are skilled in using repetition as a marker of propositional relations in written language.

Abstract

Culture is about human existence and the way of life, while language is about the communication system between people in a particular society or community. Language use usually reflects the habits of society, the way of thinking, the work of the brain, the history of society, and the internal relationship in society. The use of personal pronoun inclusive we ité in Manggarai language helps speakers find out the relationship between linguistic aspects and cultural values. Based on these arguments, this study aims to analyze the relationship between the two aspects that are being addressed. The data were collected through observations and interviews of the ten traditional spokespersons, then analyzed qualitatively. The finding indicates that the use of ité in all of its forms reflects the etiquette of people in Manggarai, Indonesia. Referring to the data stated, this study, therefore, concludes that the first personal pronoun plural inclusive we ité, in Manggarai language and culture demonstrates the speaker's politeness and humility in front of the hearer or listener; the speaker truly respects the interlocutor; to convey high regard for the interlocutor in a high position; to prove tribute, respect, and admiration; to show intimacy, closeness, and fraternity in the social relationship; and to show a great homage to Supreme Being.

Abstract

This article reports on the findings of a study about South African Police Services (SAPS) training with specific reference to English linguistic knowledge of police trainees. English linguistic training in (SAPS) training academies have become central to both training and teaching and learning. Despite several benefits identified in literature regarding adequate English linguistic knowledge, the training in SAPS leaves much to be desired. Therefore, the impetus of this paper is to make a case to challenge the tacit and poignant factors affecting effective SAPS training program with specific reference to English linguistic competence. The researcher makes a case that the training program in its current state is faced with many challenges and intricacies that hampers it from achieving one of its goals which is to produce police officers with adequate workplace English linguistic competency. A mixed research approach was adopted to investigate the phenomena. The research instruments were a locally designed questionnaire complimented by in-depth interviews with a selected sample and extensive literature review of scholarly literature on the matter. Needs Analysis theory was adopted as the pillar in this study. Among the findings was the lack of expertise in teaching English writing by police instructors. The study also found that SAPS Language policy is ‘completely’ silent as far as pedagogy is concerned in SAPS training academies. The study also found the other a systemic problem called ‘placement conundrum’. Furthermore, the study also found that ineffective English writing screening measures for police recruits contributes to the problem. In addition, the other unsurprising was the over dominance of physical training over academic teaching in the training colleges. This study underscores the crucial aspect of reflective research as a source of information for improving training in SAPS training academies.

Abstract

An increase in racist acts of violence against people of Asian descent, ranging from verbal abuse to physical violence, with victims of young children to the elderly in various states. Although not the first in US history, the various cases of post-Donald Trump racist attacks are very worrying for their development, because they occur so frequently and threaten the lives of those who are targeted, particularly Americans of Chinese descent. This widespread racist attack that occurred in almost all US states is unprecedented in the country's long history, following racist acts that have been directed against black people. This article aims to find out how racism became commonplace in the United States under President Trump. Are there factors behind the increase in racism in the United States, especially during a pandemic? To identify the problem, the authors conducted a literature study and observations on social media. The authors used a qualitative approach with sentiment analysis in this study. The result of this study is that Donald Trump's leadership during the pandemic had a massive impact on America and the world, namely racial discrimination against Asia-America.

Abstract

 This naturalistic qualitative research investigated the insufficient performances of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains in online-class learning and the paradigm shifts of Bloom’s learning domains from face-to-face teaching learning process to internet-based teaching learning process. This research adapted the theory of Bloom’s taxonomy which discussed the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The data was taken by semi-structured interview with the university students about the online learning experience and the analysis was done by categorizing to get the grand theory. It was found that the online learning brought several positive sides such coming to class on time, saving cost for transportation, and paperless, and the negative sides of online learning were the limited reach, limited facilities, and over-cost of internet connection. Then, the cognitive failure in online learning affected the understanding, the affective failure in online learning affected the receiving, responding, valuing, organization, and characterization. The psycho-motoric failure in online learning affected fundamental movement, perceptual abilities, physical abilities, and skilled movement. The paradigm shift of Bloom’s learning domain is the way to teach, the way to behave, and the way to socialize.

Abstract

This study discusses the bereavement of Amir, the main character of The Kite Runner, and analyzes the defense mechanisms projected toward the bereavement. This study uses a psychological approach to identify and analyze Amir’s bereavement and defense mechanisms. The qualitative descriptive nature of this study allows data to be presented in the form of texts or descriptions. Data were mined from the novel through the character’s feelings, thoughts, and dialogues. This analysis shows that Amir experiences five stages of bereavement: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. To cope with the bereavements, he performs several defense mechanisms; displacement, rationalization, projection, repression, regression, undoing, and denial. This study is conducted upon the elements within the novel through a psychological perspective to better understand the story as well as to provide multi-dimension literature understanding.

Abstract

The question of gender roles in Disney’s films has been one of the relevant issues in their industry. Disney has for a long time been at battle with the public for being accused of depicting their characters, specifically females, in stereotypical ways. Gender roles can affect viewers in the manner they see themselves with the others around them. The roles of men and women pictured in Disney’s films have mirrored the cultural perspective and beliefs of social norms and expectations on gender roles and identity. This study tries to figure out the roles of the princesses and the female villains in Disney's films with regard to the cultural construction of the feminine. This study applied qualitative  descriptive  method with several steps taken during the data analysis. Finally,  the  analysis  was  informally presented  through  a descriptive representation in words. The findings demonstrate that despite displaying the characteristics of strength and power, female villains are frequently portrayed as ugly, overweight, or nonsymmetrical. On the other hand, the princesses are shown to be very beautiful, which helps them succeed in life. The portrayal of the female villains also promotes the notion that powerful women are the most dangerous people in the world. In general, Disney has not yet achieved gender equation between villains and princesses. There is little room for girls to choose between being a wicked villain and a pretty princess.

Abstract

It is generally recognized that the representation of foreign culture in textbooks is pivotal for effective language learning, and successful cross-cultural communication. With this regard, the present study investigates the representation of foreign culture in English textbooks used in Cambodian upper secondary schools. The current study employs content analysis (CA) approach to analyze three English textbooks used in Cambodian upper secondary schools. Three different frameworks were used as the checklists. To investigate how foreign culture is introduced, and the proportion of subcategories in culture introduction, the framework of Zu and Kong (2009) was employed. The researchers also used the framework of Cortazzi and Jin (1999) to see the percentage of the target culture and international culture within the cultural categories. The last framework is the one proposed by Yuen (2011), which was applied to measure the distribution of cultural elements. The findings show that all two approaches to culture introduction namely direct and indirect introduction are included, but the direct introduction is predominant (61%). For the direct introduction, among four subcategories, the highest proportion is on Texts Depicting Cultural Events (51%) followed respectively by Situational Dialogues (30%), Words Accompanied by Pictures (14%), and Cultural Notes (5%). For the indirect introduction, between two subcategories, Cognitive Approach (80%) is dominant over Behavioural and Affective Approach (20%). Furthermore, regardless of source culture, target culture (66%) covers predominantly in the textbooks compared to international culture (34%). Related to cultural elements, Products account for 74% followed by Practices 13%, Persons 12%, and Perspectives 1%. The results suggest that textbook developers should consider the appropriate proportion of these cultural components, and English teachers should exploit the importance of these cultural contents in their teaching.

Abstract

A video game is one of the popular cultures that gained much popularity among teenagers and adults. However, with its popularity, it also has controversy where female characters in video games are frequently to satisfy a male fantasy. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the representation of female characters in three video games: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Mark of The Ninja, and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. This research aims to address how the representation of female characters also portrays that sexism in video games still lingers. This research applied multimodal discourse analysis inspired by Haliday’s Social Semiotics. This research also uses Kress and van Leeuwen’s techniques in analysing visual semiotic sources. This research used four steps of collecting and analysing data proposed by Bezemer and Jewitt collecting and logging data, viewing, sampling data, and transcribing and analysing data. In the collecting and logging data phase, this research collected recorded gameplay and videogame cut scene using Bandicam software and took notes from semiotic sources representing the female characters. Viewing and sampling data involved the viewing process in the recorded video and taking a sample of data from four female characters. After that, the researcher transcribes and analyses the data using a multimodal discourse analysis framework. This research found that those first lead female characters are represented by wearing tight and obscene attire but having skills in influencing the main character.

Abstract

The contemporary educational environment requires teachers to embrace innovation and creativity to facilitate learning through the use of technology. Digital picture series, as a technology-based approach, can enhance students' writing skills in narrative texts. The purpose of this study is to explore the implementation of digital picture series in learning-teaching English and its impact on students' performance in writing narrative texts. Collaborative classroom action research was used in this study, with 30 respondents consisting of 19 females and 11 males. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and tests. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using the Grammarly application. The findings indicate that the implementation of digital picture series was successful, and students' performance in writing narrative texts improved from 60.55 to 75.00. The implementation process followed a structured approach consisting of need analysis, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting in cycle I, followed by problem-solving and re-planning, action, observation, and reflection in cycle II. Researchers recommend further researchers evaluating the effectiveness of digital picture series and placing greater emphasis on writing components.
