Abstract

This research looks at how Muslim women negotiate their identities with their families or the society in relation to their agnostic ideology. The study was done by examining the article published on the Magdalene.co website. Sara Mills' feminist stylistics analysis approaches will be used to do text analysis. This research uses paradigm critical constructionism and use qualitative approach. The method used is Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) from Sara Mills. This study shows that keeping one's identity secret is a conservative family circle strategy when negotiating one's identity (as an agnostic). To achieve integration between the author and his family, however, conflict is needed. Additionally, this research demonstrates that the author has yet to arrive at a conclusive identity negotiation solution. The author's family has not yet accepted and accepted his status as a writer. This research illustrates that Magdalene.co, as a medium that promotes feminism, may serve as a comfortable place for the public at large, especially women, to voice their views.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of myenglishstep.com and Yenni's English content towards students’ descriptive writing skills of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) at SMPN 42 Semarang. In this research, a quasi-experimental study design was used. This was a quantitative study that compares Experimental Group 1 and Experimental Group 2, constructed using myenglishstep.com model treatment and Yenni Dwi Maria's English Content at sumber.belajar.kemdikbud.go.id model therapy, respectively. The sample was taken through a purposive sampling technique. The test was done for both experimental classes. The pre-test was carried out before the treatment in data collection. The present researchers used a t-test of SPSS to test the hypothesis in data analysis. Based on the results of the t-test, it was found sig. (2-tailed) = 0.001 < sig. 0.05. It means there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test data (H0 rejected, Ha accepted). It can be concluded that myenglishstep model and Yenni’s content for the seventh-grade students effectively improved students’ descriptive writing skills of HOTS.

Abstract

Adultery is a novel written by Paulo Coelho which focuses on the story of a woman named Linda, who seems to have everything in her life. However, her perfect life seems to bore her and drive her to the brink of depression. Linda then gets involved in an affair to end her boredom. At the end of the story, Linda realizes that boredom is something which will always be a part of human’s life, and mere adventures also distraction cannot abolish it. The only thing that one can do is to live their life the way it is with passion. This research analyzes the narrative techniques used in the novel based on Eastman’s theory of narrative techniques, which include point of view, time and tempo, style, and distance. This theory will measure the distance between the readers and the story/the protagonist as well as the ability of the author in delivering the message through the very techniques he has chosen. The novel has been discussed mostly in the light of the psychological condition of the protagonist or the portrayal of the female protagonist while this research focuses specifically on the narrative techniques used by Coelho in delivering his message as the author of the novel using formalism approach. At the end of this research, it can be concluded that Coelho has successfully managed to deliver his idea about boredom and passion – which are inevitable in human’s life – through the very narrative techniques he has chosen.

Abstract

Teaching spoken English has been a critical issue in the EFL context. The researchers are focusing on how to improve students' public speaking abilities. Several studies, however, have focused on how teachers build EFL learners' self-confidence before focusing on their speaking skills. Lack of self-confidence makes it difficult for beginners to speak, and it also makes it difficult for teachers to design activities that foster students' self-confidence. In response to this growing demand, this article provides an empirical account of how scripted role-plays are used as an innovative learning design in a private high school setting with a majority of students who are beginners. This research applied the Classroom Action Research study. The scripted role-play intervention was carried out for eight meetings following an action research protocol. Classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and the teacher were used to collect data. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyze these data. According to the study's findings, the students had finally gained confidence in public speaking. Being confident allowed students to practice more, which improved their speaking skills. The study's findings have three practical implications. First, increasing opportunities for students to practice speaking should be prioritized in EFL classes. Second, providing scripted role-play for beginner students allows them to easily use the language. Finally, before asking students to improve their speaking skills, teachers should focus on developing their students' self-confidence.

Abstract

The current study aims to analyze the stylistic devices and describe their realization in constructing the theme and meaning in Douglas Malloch’s “Be the Best of Whatever You Are” poem. This descriptive qualitative study applied critical content analysis as an approach. Leech & Short’s (2007) stylistic theory was adopted as an analytical tool to examine the levels of language (style) in the poem. Based on the findings, there are 67 items found in the phonological level, 60 items found in the graphological level, 7 items found in the morphological level, 151 items found in the lexical levels, 30 items found in the syntax level, and lastly, there are 13 items found in the semantic level. The stylistic realization has revealed that Malloch uses varied linguistic elements in constructing the theme of this particular poem. Importantly, Malloch, through this poem, conveys a message of hope and motivation for people of all ages to always remember that a complex reality and negative aspects in life can be juxtaposed with the positive ones such as being the best version of ourselves and share it to the world.

Abstract

This study is more focused on enhancing the accuracy of subject-verb agreement/ conjugation, by employing the mood analysis and self-correction techniques. The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of mood analysis and self-correction practices to enhance EFL students’ conjugation accuracy. This research is an experimental study in a classroom context, which was carried out in the English Department of Stikubank University (UNISBANK) Semarang. Fifteen students played a role in an experimental group while fifteen others played a role in a control group. During the treatment, the experimental group did mood analysis and self-correction while the control group did not. The t-test calculation shows that there is a significant difference between the conjugation accuracy of the text written by the experimental group and that written by the control group. The experimental group outperformed the control group. The research findings indicate that mood analysis and self-correction practices are effective to enhance EFL students’ conjugation accuracy. Thus, it is recommended that practices of mood analysis and self-correction be applied in a teaching grammar lesson.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the myths of the marind-anim community and the representation of nature in these myths through an eco-literacy approach. The eco-literary approach is a method used in investigating nature representation through a literary work. The eco-literary approach aims to bring the new perspective of having a literary work, it focuses on the idea of how the environment and the interaction of the characters toward the environment. The use of the literary work as the Marind-Anim fundamental belief in intervening the policy can be powerful, therefore In this research, the literary work will be specified into the oral literature since Marind-Anim did not have any written literature. In verifying the findings and their relation to ancestral beliefs. Through the representation of nature that emerged in the myths of the marind anim community, two main findings were obtained, namely the awareness of disaster mitigation and figures of Dema in myths who have a major role in teaching about balancing the use of natural resources. The findings on the potential of the Dema figure who appears as a forest guardian figure can be continued as a role model or figure in raising the awareness of forest conservation and can be used as a means of making policy through campaigning forest guards in literary works.

Abstract

A proper speaking test may pose challenges to teachers due to suboptimal assessment literacy and the laborious administration of a speaking test. Technology can help alleviate the labor while enabling teachers to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the speaking test. In this direction, this study aims to develop a videoconferenced English-speaking test (henceforth VEST) with the aid of videoconferencing technology. Aligned with the empirics on the use of technology for speaking assessment, this study addresses the gapping void in how videoconferencing technology can be harnessed to escalate the practicality and positive impacts of a classroom-based speaking test in an Indonesian EFL setting. The development adhered to the ADDIE framework involving Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The test prototype was evaluated using a test usefulness analysis framework. The evaluation results were coupled with reflection results of test takers’ experiences to guide test revision. Given the small sample size, this study has unveiled the potential of VEST to improve the praxis of speaking assessment and the resultant test takers’ experience. Implications and recommendations for future studies are also discussed.

Abstract

The ability to use a language to convey ideas, feelings and thoughts orally is called speaking. This shows that speaking skills are crucial to learn, including for students at school. In this way, teachers are expected to be more innovative in finding learning methods or models that can improve students’ speaking skills. The small group discussion learning model is considered to be the right treatment because it can increase students’ confidence in speaking, increase interaction between students, and students become more active in contributing to learning. The aim of carrying out this research is to find out how the application of the Small Group Discussion learning model to students affects their speaking skills, especially in conveying opinions orally in English. This research used a quantitative approach with experimental research method. This research was carried out at MA Plus Darul Hufadz Jatinangor. Participants in this research were students from classes X-A and X-B, each class consisting of 20 students. Data was collected using tests in the form of presentations from students. The results show that implementing the Small Group Discussion can have a significant influence on students’ ability to convey opinions orally using English. This is proven by the average (mean) score of the experimental class learning results reaching 74,20, while the mean score of the control class only reached 65,00. It can be concluded, that the Small Group Discussion can have a positive impact on the learning process and student learning outcomes, especially in language skills. By implementing Small Group Discussion, students are seen interacting with each other more often, they show a positive response to the application of this learning model in their learning activities.

Abstract

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic has been considered being over, yet it remains to leave global traces of reaction including in America. This study aims at investigating Anti-Asian Sentiments in Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ Tweet and Press Release. Basing upon the curiosity of how the that particular sentiment spread in America and the reaction toward it from the perspective of the Asian. This study applies a qualitative method relying upon the data taken from an officially transcribed texts of short press the release video by Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ in YouTube as display in the White House website and Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)’ tweets posted to support Stop Asian Hate Movement. The analysis employs Huckin's Critical Discourse Analysis theory The results show that sentiment frames emerge in the forms of the violent attacks, discrimination, and the degradation of self-esteem. The existence of such sentiments has encouraged some reactions namely the awareness of Asian identity, the awareness of the rise of hate crimes, and the awareness of of supporting Stop Asian Hate movement. These findings implies that the BTS expressions language can act as an instrument of advocacy, power of negotiation, and expression of ideology. Thus, this study is significant for further studies on text analysis and rhetoric expressions, and cultural studies in general.
