Abstract

In the post-Reformasi era, the political dynamic of Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of elites entrenched in various government lines. The 2024 presidential and vice presidential elections also involved political elites, including President Jokowi, especially in winning the eldest son, Gibran. As President, Jokowi has various accesses to socialize with the Prabowo-Gibran work program, which is considered a symbol of the continuity of Jokowi’s program. Using qualitative methods and Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, this article will analyze the myths in Jokowi’s political communication on social media related to the nomination of Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate. This article produces three main points: denotation, connotation, and myth, and shows Jokowi’s political communication that reflects democracy and neutrality. In addition, the obstacles faced are often transformed into narratives that strengthen his leadership image. This study suggests enhancing the narrative of meritocracy and democracy, transparency in the political process, consistency in national symbols, focus on public issues, and strengthening the image of independent and progressive leadership. This research is expected to provide new insights for political practitioners and researchers in understanding the dynamics of contemporary politics in Indonesia.

The conceptual basis of this research is based on the opinion of Crystle M. Bruno (2020) who classifies the article into three parts; the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The study found that how information is delivered in online media in the UK and America shows similarities and differences. The root of the equation can be seen in the choice of long-form journalism format. Meanwhile, differences were identified in the variations in preparing the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. More importantly, the direction and development of journalism in America and Britain is moving towards the institutionalization of quality journalism.

Abstract

War flaming constitutes one of the perilous practices prevalent on social media platforms. This might result in discomfort associated with social media usage, leading to melancholy, anxiety, excessive worry, and disturbances in mental health. War Flaming has become a prominent issue that necessitates enhancing digital literacy on social media platforms. This study employed a qualitative methodology, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Informants were selected using standard case sampling. The selected informants include the Directorate of IKP from the Ministry of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia, SiBerkreasi, digital technology and culture experts, and specialists in social campaigns. The findings indicated that digital literacy building aimed at mitigating war flaming on social media involved creating innovative social campaigns through pertinent language and a human-centric literacy approach. This strategy seeks to engage Generation Z, empowering youth communities as proactive advocates against hoax narratives on social media. It emphasizes collaboration among governmental entities, community leaders, and journalists within the anti-war flaming educational initiative, alongside the optimization of TikTok and Instagram for disseminating positive content, and partnerships with young influencers to promote the significance of digital reputation. Creative digital literacy, facilitated by social campaigns and multisectoral cooperation, effectively mitigates war flaming on social media, enhances Gen Z awareness, and promotes mental health through affirmative material.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the digital communication patterns carried out by religious influencers in transmitting and distributing Islamic values as a representation of moderate Islam, with Habib Ja'far as the central figure. The data used in this qualitative study was gathered by looking at the YouTube login account of a channel that Onadio Leonardo and Habib Ja'far lead. Research data analysis refers to the concept of digital communication developed by Caroline Tagg, which emphasizes flexibility, freedom, and dialogue in digital interactions. The research results show that, first, in the new media era, content uploaded by the login account has become a strategic medium for conveying moderate Islamic values by utilizing an inclusive approach using relaxed, humorous, and engaging language. Second, Habib Ja'far, as a religious influencer, prioritizes the spirit of freedom of communication, namely the expression of religious beliefs that not only respect differences but also avoid blaming or denigrating other beliefs. This approach shows that Islam can be presented as a friendly, tolerant religion relevant to the times' challenges. This research contributes to understanding the role of digital communication in voicing Islamic values of moderation. These findings also offer a new perspective on how digital media can be a strategic space for conveying peaceful and inclusive Islamic narratives.

Abstract

Social media has become a dominant factor in shaping the political behaviour of Generation Z, especially in the 2024 Presidential Election. This study aims to analyze the influence of information exposure, news content, candidate electability, and social media on the behaviour of Generation Z voters. With an explanatory quantitative approach, data were collected through questionnaires filled out by 160 University of Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo students, using the multistage cluster random sampling method. The research variables were measured using a Likert scale and tested using multiple linear regression based on SPSS 25. The study results showed that, partially, news content, candidate electability, and social media significantly influenced the behaviour of Generation Z voters, with the most significant contribution coming from social media (30.7%). In contrast, information exposure did not have a significant influence. Simultaneously, the four variables contributed 55.2% to voter behaviour. The study also found that although Generation Z actively uses social media, they tend to be sceptical of political information. In conclusion, social media, candidate electability, and news content are the main factors that influence Generation Z's political behaviour. Therefore, designing a creative and fact-based social media campaign strategy is essential to increase healthy political participation.

Abstract

Reaching voters in presidential elections frequently involves using identity politics. On the other side, first-time voters might serve as prospective targets for gaining supporters. This study aims to investigate the link between first-time voters' choices for presidential candidates and the social identities (faith, gender, and ethnicity) of presidential candidates. Social Identity Theory is the leading theory that explains the relationship between social identity and political choice preferences. This quantitative survey study looks at the relationship between political candidates' social identities and the preferences of first-time voters in Indonesia in 2023. The study's findings indicate a connection between the presidential and vice-presidential candidates' social identities and the decisions made by first-time voters. For instance, the political choices of first-time voters are directly correlated with their gender, notably whether they will accept or approve of female presidents and vice presidents. The study's findings indicate that first-time voters are open to electing a female president. An interesting finding to highlight is how new voters tend to be open to the choice of president and vice president of other religions. Most first-time voters (respondents) accept presidents and vice presidents from minority religions such as Catholics, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Confucians, and local religions.

Abstract

Empirical research indicates that the mainstream media in Indonesia frequently fail to serve as effective watchdogs. In contrast, social media platforms facilitate digital democracy by enabling citizens to oversee power structures, although they also increase opportunities for government surveillance. This study aims to assess whether sousveillance can serve as an alternative mechanism for monitoring power when mainstream media do not fulfill their watchdog role by analyzing trends in mainstream media, Twitter, and citizen sousveillance. A mixed-methods approach is employed. The quantitative method utilizes Natural Language Processing (NLP) and the Naive Bayes sentiment analysis technique, while qualitative content analysis enriches the findings. The results demonstrate that news coverage in mainstream media outlets (Jawa Post, Kompas, and CNN Indonesia) failed to fulfill the watchdog function, as reporting was predominantly positive toward the government and its supporters, and hostile toward NGOs and groups critical of the government. A similar trend is observed on Twitter. However, analysis of sousveillance practices reveals that, although sousveillance does not directly influence policy change, it contributes to intermedia agenda-setting and can function as an alternative form of oversight. These findings highlight the significance of sousveillance as a form of citizen oversight, particularly in contexts where democratic institutions are in decline.
