A textbook is crucial in teaching-learning process at the university level. However, many textbooks in universities are lack in practice and too theoretical. This can be an obstacle for non-English department students. It will be hard for them to speak in English if the existing textbooks only concern in grammatical issues and put aside the communicative side (Speaking). This study aims to develop a practical and effective English textbook that prioritize the communicative side i.e., the spoken English for non-English department students. The research method used in this research is the Research & Development (R&D) by using the ADDIE development model in which the non-English Department students of STKIP Al Maksum Langkat as its research subject. The research sample was taken randomly (Random Sampling) based on the research needs. From the data taken, it was found that: 1) the developed-English textbook is declared very valid (92.9%) by 6 expert validators and could be used but needed minor revisions, 2) textbooks had met the criteria of practicality and effectiveness in improving the English speaking skill of non-English department students.

Learning media is an important component in learning. One of the media that can be used is audio visual media. The aim of this study was to develop a feasible Audio Visual Text Module on Congratulation and Compliment Expressions as learning media.This reasearch was conducted at Karang Taruna RW 17 English Course Sei Langkai, Batam, and research and development (R&D)Hannafin and Peck modelwas used. The instrument used to collect data in this research wasquestionnaireswhich validated by material and media experts, then shared to tutors and studentsusing a Likert scale. Product trial obtained 77.02% for students response and it was categorized as ‘agree’ category. Meanwhile it obtained 76.67% for tutor rensponse and it was categorized as ‘agree’ category.Usage trial obtained 87.07% for students response and it was categorized as ‘strongly agree’ category. Meanwhile it obtained 88.66 for tutor rensponse and it was categorized as ‘strongly agree’ category. The products of this research are module and audio visual (MP4) about Congratulating and Compliment Expressions, and both are neccessary to be used as learning media.

Slang is confidential informal English, which is created and used by a society. This study discusses about an analysis of slang in the Skin movie. The purpose of this study is to find the type of slang and the reason why people / society used slang words in daily conversation. The source of the data was taken from the script of Skin movie. Skin movie was classified as a biographical drama movie released on 2018 in Tokyo and directed by Guy Nattiv. The research design used in this study is a descriptive qualitative research with a document or content analysis as the research type. This thesis is described one by one word or phrase of slang found from the Skin movie by using dictionaries and theory related to slang. From the analysis, there are fifty-two slang words found and one type of slang used, they were society slang. Then the reasons found and used in this study are at least seven types. There were in sheer high spirits, to express humour, to be different, to express surprising / shocking, to be brief and concise, to express refusal / rejection, and to show friendliness. This study highly expected to give contribution for the readers to know about slangs clearly. It can help the readers speak English fluently. Then, it can also be expected to enrich the new English vocabulary used in daily conversation.

This research is mainly conducted by the writer in order to know that there is a significant effect of using the pre-questioning to improving the students’ reading comprehension skills to the tenth grade students’ of SMA Negeri 2 Padangsidimpuan or not. The number of the sample is 52 students. In this research the writer applies the cluster sampling. And as the instrument for collecting the data the writer uses the questioners for variable X and the essay test for variable Y. For getting the needed data, the writer applies the library and field research. The method of research is experiment method, that is the writes find out the different of students’ score before-after using pre-questioning method. Based on the result of research can be known the students’ mean score in pre-test is 80.76. After treatment the students’ mean score increase into 89.04. After collecting the needed the data, the next step which is done by the writer is analyzing it by using statistical analysis. The statistical formulation which is used in this research is the formulation of Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (rxy). After analyzing the collected data, it has been got that the value of correlation (rxy), that is 0.945. By consulting this value to the table interpretation given before, it is known that this value can be categorized into the very high correlation category. It means that there is a significant effect of using the pre-questioning to improving the students’ reading comprehension skills to the tenth grade students’ of SMA Negeri 2 Padangsidimpuan. The hypothesis of this research accepted.

Speaking is the crucial part to master in English, it can help people to connected with other people around the world. But in fact, students face some difficulties to learning English. The difficulties caused of several things; teaching strategy, curriculum, environment or the learners themselves. There are several emotional matters that play the role and influence students ability in learning, one of them is self-awareness. The objective of the study was to find the correlation between self-awareness and students’ speaking skill. The population of the study was the tenth grade of students at Vocational High School Sinar Metta Batam. The sampling technique was using census or total sampling because the population less than 100. The data obtained from questionnaire for self-awareness and speaking test. Slang can not only be found in daily conversation but it also can be found in literary work such as movies, for example in The Expendables 3 Movie which the characters’ use slang quite often in dialogues. The purpose of this paper is to study the function, type, and meaning of the slang terms used by the characters of The Expendables 3 movie. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method to analyze. After doing the analysis, the researchers found fifty-five slang terms and the details are as follows: (1) There are two types of slang, namely primary and secondary slang. The type which more often used is primary slang. This research will analyze one of literary works namely movie. This research will be focused on the manipulation action as the human personality part that can be found in the movie especially about the main characters’ manipulation actions in two movies namely movies entitled “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “To Die For”, then the writer will compare them. There are two points that will be described relating to the manipulation, those are; manipulation as one of Machiavellianism traits and manipulation as one of the behavior patterns used by narcissists. The purpose of this research was to describe the similarities and differences of both movies through the manipulation action from the both movies. In this research, the writer used the descriptive qualitative method. Furthermore, the writer collects the data from the two movies to classify the similarities and differences refer to manipulation action of the main characters. The data collection in this research was done by watching, and took notes before do the analysis from the dialogue, situation who delivered in the movie which becomes the main data in this research.

During the Covid 19 Pandemic, lectures were carried out totally via online learning. This study aims at describing the EFL students’ perception on the issue. This study applied a descriptive method and involved 102 students of the English Education Study Program- Riau Kepulauan University. The questionnaire was in 5 Likert scale and open questions which was modified from three components of Information Technology Innovation-instrument by Moore and Benbasat namely relative advantage, ease of use, and compatibility. It also was settled up to get information on challenge, obstacles, and students’ negative opinion toward the online-learning. The data was taken at the end of even semester (July) on academic year 2019/2020, and it was distributed by sending online survey to the year 1 to 4 of English Education Study Program of UNRIKA. In analyzing the data, it was computed to get the frequencies and percentages. The results are displayed in the form of chart and tables, and it is found that students’ perception can be considered as the important factor in applying the online learning particularly in the Covid 19 pandemic era.

This research investigates the language attitude of university students in South Jakarta toward the heritage language and language maintenance by employing a questionnaire and an interview. The study also tries to find out students’ efforts in maintaining heritage language and difficulties dealing with heritage language maintenance. Based on the research study most of the students have positive attitude that heritage language maintenance is very important. The challenges with heritage language maintenance are caused by many factors such as the environment, parent’s policy, lack of exposure to learn and to practice the heritage language in speaking, listening, and reading. By taking the case study approach, the present study found that students whose parent from mixed culture tend to neglect heritage language. They prefer to use Indonesian language or other foreign languages instead of heritage language

The purpose of this study was to find out whether there is a correlation between students 'interpersonal intelligence and students' reading comprehension. The research design used in this research was quantitative correlational research. The populations in this study were 40 students of fourth semester at English Department in Academic Year 2019/2020. The population was selected by simple random sampling technique. The sample in this research was 29 students. Interpersonal Intelligence Questionnaire and Reading Comprehension Test were used as instruments of this study after the validity and reliability tests of the two instruments were conducted. The data normality test used in this study was Kolmogorov Smirnov. The researcher analyzed the correlation using the Pearson Product Moment formula to find out correlation between Students’ Interpersonal Intelligence and Students’ Reading Comprehension. The research found out that there was a significant correlation between Students' Interpersonal Intelligence and Students' Reading Comprehension of fourth semester at English department Universitas Riau Kepulauan in Academic Year 2019/2020. Suggestions were taken by researcher, namely that teachers must be aware of the importance of interpersonal intelligence in students to assist students in honing students 'interpersonal intelligence and students must realize and hone interpersonal intelligence that is in themselves.
