Abstract

The current implementation of character education has not fully succeeded in establishing the character of Indonesian people, especially high school students. The purpose of this study is to develop a holistic model of character education management for high school that can be used to enhance character education implementation in high school in Pemalang Regency. This study employed qualitative approach, starting from the preliminary stage of research and development until the test of feasibility. The variables in this study are: 1) the principal, 2) the vice principal of curriculum, 3) the subject teachers and guidance and counseling staffs, 4) head of administration, 5) parents, and 6) the school committee. The results of preliminary study show that: 1) the implementation of character education in high school in Pemalang Regency is still lacking, 2) The teaching of character education only focuses on the aspects of intellectuality, 3) All components consisting of the principal, vice-principal of curriculum, subject teachers, counseling and guidance, head of the administration, parents, and school committee still implement the character education partially, 4) an alternative solution in the development of a holistic model of character education management in high school in Pemalang Regency is needed. From these results, the lacking of character education is caused by the teachers who only pay attention to the cognitive aspect, and ignore the affective, psychomotor, and spiritual aspects of learners. In fact, students should be fostered intellectually, physically, spiritually, and affectively, involving the integration from the principal, vice principal of curriculum affairs, vice principal of student affairs, subject teachers, counseling staffs, heads of administration, parents and school committees. This is consistent with a holistic model approach.

Abstract

A training which is packaged and managed theoretically and practically will produce an effective training concept. Such training will facilitate the achievement of the expected goals. A training which starts from the planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing and evaluation will be carried out effectively if it meets the requirements, namely clear objectives, based on needs, based on the data results of mapping and competency tests, conductedregularly and periodically, budget savings, easy to be implemented and disseminated, and followed by monitoring and evaluation. Training effectiveness related to professional competence of teachers is a training which is able to produce a comprehensible figure of teacher and is able to provide materials for behavioral change to carry out their duties at school. The provided training is not only for refreshment, but also to nurture and develop the potential and competency of teachers when carrying out their tasks. Training is given not merely because of obligatory program or pursuing the budget spending target, but it is actually used to form a professional teacher. Therefore, a training needs to be managed from beginning to end. Training even should involve various stakeholders so that the training can be used as a regular program to improve the quality of teachers.

Abstract

The facts showed that traditional ceramic arts are one of the local cultural heritages in which their existence is not easily maintained and continued because of competition with modern industrial products in market. The opposite condition occurs in Mayong Lor village that this local cultural heritage is still well maintained and developed from generation to generation for about six centuries in communities. Thus, a fundamental question arises why and how this phenomenon occurs. This study examines ceramics enculturation problems of crafters in Mayong Lor village communities, Jepara as the manifestation of adaptation strategies in the preservation and continuation of local culture creative potential. Two approaches used as the basis of assessment strategies. First, the theoretical approach was applied through the approach of culture, aesthetics, structural functionalism, adaptation, and education. Next, the methodological approach was used through anthropological research approach operated by using qualitative research method. The results show that the ceramics enculturation of artisans’ in Mayong Lor village communities naturally appear to function as a cultural mechanism of ceramics traditional activities in the environment of crafter families. This cultural mechanism is the form of informal education as the manifestation of adaptation strategies in maintaining and continuing creative potential of ceramics culture in the community, across generations since 15th to 21th century. The local culture stakeholders are recommended to adopt or adapt the findings of this study as a model in determining policies for the development of conservation programs and local culture potential in their respective regions.

Abstract

This research focused on implementing class observation to get the whole idea of what existing models applied by the teachers to carry out their instructional activities were like. There were two state and two private elementary schools observed in this study. Observing class activities were accompanied with analyzing class teaching documents such as RPP and review paper to get the idea of what the existing model applied by the teachers was like. Yet, this study is focusing only on class observation. The research objective was to find out the quality of the existing model for teaching English in year 4 of the elementary school.  The method was carrying out class observations amounting from four to five times to each class.  The observer sat at the back of the class watching the activities and noted down what the teacher and students did along the period.  The note was later changed into field notes, giving comments after several minutes observation, focusing what the teacher did and what the students responded to what the teacher instructed them to do. The result showed that students responded accordingly to the teachers’ instruction either in group or individual work.  Thus, to get students’ involvement for the whole period, teachers have to be well prepared in terms of both materials and techniques. They can be written completely in their teaching preparation (RPP)
