Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry
Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry or known as PJD, is an English-language scientific periodicals published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Padjadjaran thrice a year on every March, July and November. The submission process of manuscript is open throughout the year. All submitted manuscripts will go through the double-blind peer review and editorial review before being granted with acceptance for publication. Designed as a medium of information and scientific knowledge, Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry publishes numerous research articles, in the area of Oral Biology, Dental Material Science and Technology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pedodontics, Dental Public Health and Community Dentistry, Conservative Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine, Dental Radiology, as well as with their development through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Initially published as Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry (PJD) magazine ISSN 1979-0201(print) on 2007 in form of printed issues. In 2017, the magazine had its online published version under the same with ISSN 2549-6212 (online) in accordance with the policy of LIPI. Padjadjaran Journal of Dentistry has been using Open Journal System requiring all writers to register in advance before they are allowed to upload the manuscript they write online. Afterwards, the editors, peer reviewers, and writers can monitor the manuscript processing. Several other changes are informed in the Journal History.

Periodontal disease has very complex and multi factor etiology. Plaque bacteria is the main cause of periodontal disease and another risk factor that also plays a role is a smoking habit. Cigarette product such as nicotine can influence the development of periodontal disease that can directly and systemically damage the function of PMN cell. The research was conducted by taking a clinical examination on the smoking influence that covers the number of cigarettes and the period of smoking, and kind of cigarette to the worse of periodontal disease, and by measuring the epithelial attachment loss and the bleeding index. The research was conducted to 152 male aged 20-45 years old, comprised 80 smokers and 72 nonsmokers at the Clinic of Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia, Jakarta. The result of the research showed that smoking gave influence on the worse of the periodontal disease. There was a profound relationship between the smoking period and the number of cigarettes consumed everyday indicated by the epithelial attachment loss. Smoking did not enhance gingival bleeding. The relationship between kinds of cigarette and the gingival bleeding score and the epithelial attachment loss did not show a significant bleeding.

Polimerizatian is the critical stage to determine the quality of composites resin, this involves isolated monomer carbon double bonds being converted to an extended network of single bonds. Physical and mechanical properties of composites are influenced by the level of conversion attained during polymerization. An adequate light intensity and light curing time are important to obtain the degree of polymerization. The objective of this study is to evaluate the difference of the hardness nanocomposites which activated by LED LCU based on the variation of curing times. This study is a true experimental research. The samples were made from nanocomposites material with cylinder form of 4 mm in depth, 6 mm in diameter. This samples divided into 3 groups of curing times. Group, I was cured for 20's curing time as a control due to manufactory recommended; Group II was cured for 30's, and Group III was cured for 40's and the hardness (Rebound hardness tester) was determined using Rebound scale (RS) and converted by Mohs scale (MS). There was a very significant level of hardness rate from each group using ANOVA test. The result of the study concludes that there were the differences on the nanocomposites hardness level cured under different curing times 20, 30 and 40 sec. The longer of curing times, the higher level of hardness.

Dentigerous cyst is an odontogenic cyst that surrounds the crown of an impacted tooth, caused by fluid accumulation between the reduced enamel epithelium and the enamel surface, usually associated with mandibular third molars. The purpose of this study was to find out the prevalence of dentigerous cyst caused by impaction of mandibular third molar at the oral and maxillofacial surgery department of Hasan Sadikin hospital Bandung. This study was a descriptive survey study. Samples were taken from the data of patient’s medical record from July 2006 until June 2011. The result of this study showed the number of oromaxillofacial cyst cases in the period was as much as 316 (0.78%). Dentigerous cyst was the most common odontogenic cyst (48,64%). Dentigerous cyst most commonly caused by impaction of the mandibular third molar (13,89%). The amount of male and female patients with dentigerous cyst was the same (50% each). The most age group that suffered dentigerous cyst due to impaction of the mandibular third molars was the age group of 41-50 years (40%). The most chosen therapy was enucleation (100%). From the results of this study can be concluded that dentigerous cyst due to impaction of mandibular third molars was the most common case, with the same frequency found in both male and female, the most age group of impacted was the age group of 41-50 years old, and the most chosen therapy was enucleation.

The one-third lower face height belongs to ideal proportion, ratio 1:1:1, of vertical face height. The one-third lower face height could be influenced by mastication. The one-third lower face height that shorter than normal ratio is generally followed by deep bite which may lead to temporomandibular disfunction even so eustachian tube disfunction, this condition may interfere mastication function, which can be measured by mastication performance. The research objective was to determine the effects of short lower face height to the mastication performance based on overbite. The research method was a cross-sectional study with epidemiology survey type. Research subjects 12-15 years old junior high school with Deutero Melayu Sub races in Bandung. Sampling technique used multistage random sampling by determining the size of the sample based on potluck sample and gained 24 children (group 1) with the normal ratio of vertical face height and 27 children with short lower facial height which were 11 children overbite normal (group 2) and 16 children deep bite (group 3). Mastication performance by 20 times chewing artificial test food then followed by sieving test. Mastication performance value represented by the median particle size (MPS) and the distribution of the particle distribution (b). The results of average MPS and b between group 1, 2 and 3 used statistical analysis MPS with ANOVA test which Fhit=5.56 and pvalue=0.0075, b which Fhit=3.41 and pvalue=0.0430 showed significant differences. Continued with group T test MPS (value = 0.0925) dan b (value = 0.2076) between group 1 and 2 showed a non significant differences. While between group 1 and 3 showed a highly significant differences in MPS (value = 0.0037 and = 0,01) and a significant differences in b (value = 0.0141 and = 0,05). Conclusions of this study were children with short lower face height and normal overbite did not decrease the mastication performance while children with deep bite decrease the mastication performance.

This research is aimed at observing whether there are differences in the measurement results between dental arch length and arch length measured manually and by using computer software, i.e. Corel Draw 12, in study model cast as well as the measurement speed in both techniques. The method used in this research is the descriptive comparative method. The measurement is performed to 52 study model cast samples with the Spee Curve depth of < 1.5 mm, between 1.5 and 3 mm, > 3 mm. The measurements are performed using 2 techniques: a manual technique using a calliper and by using Corel Draw 12, a computer program with a computer scanner. The t-test statistic is used to reveal whether there are differences in the measurement results between the two techniques and which method needs shorter time. Statistically, there are significant differences either in the speed of the measurement or the results of the measurement using both techniques where t-calculated > t table. The deeper the Spee curve, the more different the results from the manual technique and computed technique. The differences are in the range of 0.32 to 0.52 mm for dental arch length and 0.33 to 0.43 mm for arch length. These differences are still acceptable clinically. By referring to the results of this research, it is expected that computer usage can be increased and become an alternative against manual technique of measurement.

Introduction: One part of the most important individual identification procedure is approximate age can be done on an individual living or dead. Judging from some of the methods that have been there, have not found a method forecasts age through the frontal sinuses, particularly research conducted in Indonesia. The frontal sinus can be used for identification because the frontal sinuses began to evolve and look at radiographs at the age of 7 years and did not change after the age of 20 years, it reveals the existence of differences in the size of the frontal sinuses with age. Objective: To asses of the frontal sinus anteroposterior size based on against lateral cephalometric radiographs chronological age as forensic identification. Methods: A number of samples are 502 lateral cephalometric patient data from secondary data of patients aged 7-20 years, 335 pieces of lateral cephalometric. Purpose of of the study was to asses the frontal sinus anteroposterior size chronological age as forensic identification. Radiograph female patients and 167 pieces in male patients. Data anteroposterior size of the frontal sinus is obtained by pulling the longest line perpendicular to the line of Sh-Sl. Results: The results showed that at the age of 7 years the average size of the frontal sinus anteroposterior 4.20 mm and 5.05 mm which is the smallest size, while the average size of the biggest, by 8.46 mm in women and men at the age of 11.37 mm 20 years. Conclusions: In women, the fastest increase occurred at the age of 7-8 years, males at the age of 16-18 years. The frontal sinuses anteroposterior size increases with age, both men and women.

Denture consists of acrylic artificial teeth and acrylic prothesis base bond chemically with a bond strength of 315 kgF/cm2. Most of the commercial acrylic artificial teeth do not specify their specifications and all of those acrylic artificial teeth do not include mechanical data (bond strength). The aim of this study is to discover which acrylic artificial teeth meet ADA specification no. 15. This study is a descriptive analytic study performed to 5 acrylic artificial teeth posterior brands commonly used by dentists and technicians. From each brand, 3 sample teeth were taken. The acrylic artificial teeth were prepared into a rectangular shape and were attached between acrylic prothesis base simulation and jigs. The sample was given tensile load using a Universal Testing Machine. The amount of force that causes the teeth to be fractured was recorded and the bond strength was calculated. The results of the study show that the average value for the five acrylic artificial teeth for the five brands were as followed: Brand A, 125.993 kgF/cm2; B, 188.457 kgF/cm2; C, 175.880 kgF/cm2; D, 153.373 kgF/cm2; E, 82.839 kgF/cm2. The data can be tested statistically by using One Way ANOVA test and Dunnett test (alpha = 0.05). From the study, it is concluded that the five acrylic artificial teeth have a bond strength below the ADA specification no. 15.

The relation between pregnancy and periodontal inflammation has been recognized for many years, therefore, it is important to maintain and promote oral health during pregnancy. The aim of this research is to evaluate dentist's knowledge in oral hygiene instructions in preventing gingivitis in the pregnant women. The research has conducted a survey of 40 general dentists in West Bandung District. The survey was done by distributing forms of the questionnaire sent by mail or by telephone interview, and by asking the dentists about their knowledge in oral hygiene instructions regarding the dental care for pregnant women. All of the respondents agreed that oral health during pregnancy was important and therefore it was important to give the Oral Hygiene Instructions (OHI) to the pregnant patients. Two-thirds of dentists (63.8%) agreed that to do scaling was safe, 36.2% of the respondents doubted if Chlorhexidine mouthwash was safe for the use in pregnant women. Almost half of the dentists (57.4%) were doubtful that there was a relationship between periodontitis and preterm birth or low weight birth rate. Dentists as one of the providers of prenatal health care already realized how important it is to keep oral health during pregnancy; however, they doubted if there was a relationship between periodontitis, pre-term birth and low weight birth rate and the safety of using chlorhexidine as an antimicrobial agent during the pregnancy. Providing up to date information and continuing education for dentist's knowledge in order to prevent gingivitis during pregnancy.

Introduction: Dental and oral health can affect the quality of life as it relates to the general health condition. Dental and oral health problem that mostly found is dental caries. Dental caries mostly occurs in children in the mixed dentition stage. The mixed dentition stage occurs in elementary school-aged children, mark with malocclusions and tooth decays, that allows food retention as main cause of dental caries. The purpose of this study was to see the description of dental caries on mixed dentition stage of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. Methods: This research was a descriptive research with cross-sectional approach. The population in this study was elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center. The sampling method used was purposive sampling method. The caries profile was measured by deft index for deciduous teeth and DMFT index for permanent teeth were presented in tabular and diagrams. Results: The results of the study towards 272 elementary school students showed that the average value of deft index was 3.99 and DMFT index value was 1.26. This result can be caused since the location of the population was located in urban areas, with easy access to dental and oral health services and good tendencies towards the awareness of dental and oral health care. Conclusion: Dental caries of elementary school students in Cibeber Community Health Center based on (World Health Organization) guidelines by deft index was category as moderate and by DMFT index was classified low category.

Introduction: Oral motor disorders, such as speech and swallowing disorders, often occur in children. Generally parents complain that children refuse to eat hard food, drooling excess, and unable to speak clearly. Oral motor disturbance can occur due to the unavailability of maturation of oral motor structure. This study was aimed to determine the description of oral motor disturbance in children aged 2-4 years in some Integrated Health Service (Posyandu) in Bandung. Methods: Descriptive research with cross sectional design. The study was conducted on 100 parents who came to six posyandu in Bandung by using questionnaires through guided interviews by researchers. Samples were taken using multistage random sampling technique. The results will be presented in tabular form and assessed using Arikunto standard criteria. Results: The results showed a low percentage in oral motor disturbances. Indicators of oral motor disturbance in children aged 2 - 4 years included in either category. As for children who have oral motor disorders exhibit various manifestations. Conclusion: The description of oral motor disorders in children aged 2 - 4 years in Posyandu in Bandung was shown by various manifestations. Based on the number of populations taken, oral motor disorders in children aged 2-4 years included into either category.
