Abstract

Sambas Regency in West Kalimantan has significant agribusiness potential, yet smallholder farmers in the region continue to face various challenges such as limited access to markets, capital, and technology. This study aims to identify inclusive business models that have been implemented, evaluate their impact on the economic and social welfare of smallholder farmers, and examine the barriers faced in their implementation. A mixed-method approach was employed, collecting data through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and field observations involving smallholder farmers, community leaders, and agribusiness actors. The findings show that inclusive business models involving partnerships between smallholder farmers and agribusiness companies have provided substantial benefits, including increased income, expanded market access, and capacity building through training and extension services. However, challenges such as bureaucratic complexity, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to financing remain significant obstacles. The study concludes that inclusive business models hold great potential for empowering smallholder farmers, provided there is strong support from the government, the private sector, and financial institutions. Policy recommendations are proposed to strengthen the effectiveness of these models in promoting inclusive economic development in rural areas.

Abstract

The agricultural sector in Indonesia, particularly the oil palm industry, faces persistent challenges in improving smallholder welfare, stabilizing income, and ensuring financial inclusion. Smallholder oil palm farmers in West Kalimantan often experience limited access to formal financial services, price volatility, and cash flow instability due to weak market linkages and dependence on middlemen. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the adoption of digital financial services, contract farming arrangements, and access to supply chain financing among smallholder oil palm farmers in West Kalimantan. Using a mixed-method approach, quantitative data were obtained from 210 smallholder farmers through structured questionnaires, while qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including cooperatives, off-takers, and financial institutions. The results show that the implementation of digital financial technology (fintech) significantly increases farmers’ access to supply chain financing through improved financial literacy, transaction transparency, and digital credit scoring mechanisms. Furthermore, contract farming serves as an effective intermediary that strengthens the trust between farmers and financial institutions, thereby reducing financing risks. The integration of these three instruments, digital finance, contract farming, and supply chain finance, creates a synergistic model that supports sustainable palm oil production, enhances smallholders’ income stability, and reduces transaction inefficiencies across the value chain. This research provides new empirical evidence on the importance of integrated digital financial ecosystems in supporting the resilience and competitiveness of smallholder farmers. Policy recommendations include the need for stronger institutional collaboration, digital infrastructure development, and the establishment of inclusive financial platforms tailored to smallholder characteristics.

Abstract

The palm oil industry plays a pivotal role in Indonesia’s economy and contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, concerns regarding economic, environmental, and social sustainability highlight the urgent need to promote sustainable agricultural practices. This study examines potential challenges in implementing the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification system in 2025 and develops a comprehensive adoption model by integrating Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation (DOI). The model incorporates eight factors: attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. Structured questionnaires were administered to 300 independent smallholder palm oil farmers in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings confirm that attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, relative advantage, compatibility, and trialability positively and significantly influence the adoption of sustainable farming practices, while complexity exerts a significant negative effect. Observability showed no significant impact. These results provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners to design targeted strategies, programs, and policies that strengthen social norms, enhance perceived behavioral control, and emphasize the relative advantage and compatibility of sustainable practices. By fostering voluntary adoption among independent smallholders, the successful implementation of ISPO can be ensured, benefiting both farmers and the environment.

Abstract

The agricultural sector plays a crucial role in developing economies such as Indonesia, particularly in regions like West Kalimantan where it supports a large share of the population. However, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) face persistent supply chain challenges, including inefficiencies, high operational costs, and limited market access. This study aims to examine the role of digital technologies in optimizing agribusiness supply chains among MSMEs in West Kalimantan, grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities theory. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from a survey of 100 MSMEs and qualitative insights from in-depth interviews with 20 selected participants. Quantitative data were analyzed using regression analysis, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis. The findings indicate that digital technology adoption significantly improves supply chain efficiency, product traceability, and market access. However, adoption remains limited due to barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, high implementation costs, and low digital literacy. The study highlights the importance of external support, including government policies and public–private partnerships, to enhance digital adoption. This research provides practical and theoretical insights into the strategic role of digital technologies in strengthening MSME competitiveness and supporting sustainable rural development.

Abstract

Smallholder oil palm plantations play a vital role in Indonesia’s rural economy; however, these enterprises remain highly vulnerable to Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) price volatility and fluctuations in fertilizer input costs. This study aims to analyze the financial feasibility of transitioning toward precision agriculture and to formulate investment risk mitigation strategies for smallholder oil palm farmers. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach and financial meta-analysis, the study evaluates the parameters of Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Net Benefit-Cost Ratio (Net B/C). Financial projections were synthesized from recent empirical studies on smallholder oil palm farming and precision agriculture adoption, using standardized assumptions regarding technology investment costs, fertilizer-use efficiency, and operational expenditures. The synthesis results indicate that although the initial investment in precision technologies—such as drone mapping and soil nutrient sensors—is relatively high, operational cost optimization, particularly through fertilizer efficiency reaching 15–20%, generates a positive NPV and an IRR substantially exceeding prevailing market interest rates. Further sensitivity analysis demonstrates that business models adopting precision agriculture exhibit greater resilience when facing FFB price declines of up to 25% compared with conventional models. These findings highlight the necessity of supply chain financing interventions from palm oil mills (PKS) or financial institutions to facilitate the initial technology capital costs for smallholder farmers.
