Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students’ collaborative skills in the anatomy course in the Physical Education Program at the Indonesian National Islamic University (UNIKI). This study used a quantitative pre-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design to test the effectiveness of integrating Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students' collaborative skills. The research sample consisted of 33 students selected using saturation sampling. The results showed a statistically significant increase in collaborative skills after the intervention (t(32) = 15.673; p < 0.001), with the mean increasing from 3.12 (moderate category) to 4.28 (high category). The effect size was classified as very large (Cohen’s d = 2.73), indicating that the intervention had a very high practical impact. The distribution of students also shifted significantly, from 97% in the moderate category to 100% in the high category. These findings confirm that the synergy between OBE and PBL is an effective pedagogical strategy for simultaneously enhancing and equalizing students’ collaborative skills in an inclusive mannerelementary school students’ learning motivation and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Student empowerment through the acclimatization of tissue culture–derived orchids represents a strategic approach that integrates biodiversity conservation efforts with the enhancement of human resource capacity. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of final-year Biology students in acclimatizing two orchid species of high conservation and economic value, namely Coelogyne pandurata and Phalaenopsis gigantea. The program employed a combination of theoretical instruction, demonstrations of acclimatization techniques, hands-on training, and interactive discussions on business opportunities in orchid cultivation. A total of 15 students participated in the program, which was preceded by a pre-test and concluded with a post-test to assess improvements in participants’ understanding. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in post-test scores (85.33%) compared to pre-test scores (58.67%), with an average N-Gain value of 0.65, classified as moderate. In addition, participants were able to independently perform all stages of the acclimatization process, including the removal of plantlets from culture bottles, washing off residual media, planting in sterile substrates, and the covering process. Questionnaire results indicated a high level of participant satisfaction with the materials, methods, and overall benefits of the program. Overall, this community service activity successfully enhanced students’ knowledge and technical skills in the acclimatization of tissue culture–derived orchids, supported the conservation of high-value orchid species, and strengthened students’ capacity in horticulture and bioresource-based entrepreneurial development.

Abstract

The Jamblang bark of Syzygium cumini contains diverse bioactive secondary metabolites with notable anticancer and antimicrobial potential. This review summarizes recent studies on the active compounds of S. cumini bark and their underlying biological mechanisms. A literature review was conducted following PRISMA-based guidelines by searching databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for articles published between 2010 and 2025. Studies were selected based on relevance to S. cumini bark, phytochemical composition, and anticancer or antimicrobial activity. The results indicate that S. cumini bark  major constituents include flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin), phenolic acids (ellagic acid, gallic acid), tannins, and triterpenoids (friedelin, betulinic acid). These compounds exhibit anticancer activity by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cancer cell proliferation through pathways such as NF-κB suppression (ellagic acid) and mitochondrial activation (betulinic acid). In antimicrobial studies, the n-hexane fraction of S. cumini bark extract effectively inhibits Salmonella typhi, likely via cell wall disruption by flavonoids and tannins. A summary of the active compounds and their biological activities is presented in tabular form. Overall, S. cumini bark demonstrates strong potential as a source of phytopharmaceutical candidates for anticancer and antibacterial development, highlighting the need for further compound isolation and pharmacological validation.
