Abstract

Biological parameters of insect pests is very important in testing the resistance of rice plants against brown plant hopper. This research aims to study the amount and duration of stage egg, nymph, imago, and the life cycle of brown plant hopper on four varieties of rice. The methods used in research was Complete Random Design  with four treatments (variety of IR 64, Batang Piaman, Cisokan, and IR 42) and eight replications. Research data were analyzed using variance analysis and continued with List Significant Different (LSD) at 5% level. The results of research showed that the number and duration of stage egg, nymph, imago, and cycle time of brown plant hopper in four rice varieties were different. Number of egg, nymph, and imago were lowest in 64 IR varieties, while the highest was IR 42 variety. Stage of eggs and nymphs were the shortest in IR 42 varieties, while the longest were IR variety 64. Imago stage was the shortest in IR 64 variety, while longest was the variety IR 42. The life cycle of brown plant hopper were shortest in IR 42 varieties, while longest was the variety IR 64. The results of this study can be concluded that the IR 64 varieties more resistant than the varieties IR 42, Cisokan, and Batang Piaman based on stage of egg, nymph, and imago.

Abstract

Several experiments have been conducted to study genetic variation, fitness and reproductive incompatibility of H. varicornis from different geographic populations. Genetic variation from Pandai Sikek (PS), Alahan Panjang (AP) and Kayu Aro (KA) was analyzed by using random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) technique and the similarity of genetics measured using NTSys program. The fitness of female wasps such as longevity, fecundity and preoviposition was observed and then compared among those populations. Incompatibility in reproduction was determined by accounting of reproductive compatibility (RC) index in crossing of intra and interpopulation both of PS and AP. The results showed high genetic variation of H. varicornis among population from Alahan Panjang, Pandai Sikek and Kayu Aro with similarity coefficient of 30 to 70%. The best fitness showed the female wasps from Kayu Aro that was significantly different (P= 0.00) in longevity (24.60 ± 6.4 days), fecundity (63.6 ± 28.6 eggs) and parasitization (53.60%) but not significantly different (P=0.07) in number of the first day eggs (1.1 ± 1.4 eggs). Crossing of AP and PS indicated incompatibility in reproduction among the population.

Abstract

H. varicornis is a larval parasitoid of leafminer distributing and associating with several host plants in highland vegetables planting. Three experiments were conducted to study effects of elevations, temperatures and host plants on female reproduction fitness. The first experiment, we compared fitness traits of female originated from different elevation areas i.e Pandai Sikek (900-1000 m above sea level ), Alahan Panjang(1200-1300m) and Kayu Aro (1400-1500m) whilst two other experiments were treatment of temperatures level (18, 23, 280C), and host plants (red bean, bean and cucumber) to investigate longevity, egg layed, survivorship. Parasitoids originated from Kayu Aro showed the highest longevity and number of eggs. The best fitness also was performed when adult female maintained at 230C. Parasitism, superparasitism and paralization of the parasitoid have been discussed in this paper.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to get entomopathogenic fungi isolates of bean plant rhizosphere derived from Nagari Sawah Tangah, District Pariangan, Tanah Datar Regency and to determine their pathogenicity on pod borer E. zinckenella. Isolation method was performed by diluting the soil samples in a serial dilution into 10-3 and cultured in PDA media. Furthermore, the purification was based on the shape and color of the fungus colonies. A total of 16 isolates obtained at the initial stage were selected by testing them against the fifth instar larvae Tenebrio molitor. Results showed that only 4 isolates (STA 1, STA 2.2, STA 5, and STB 3.1) could be further tested against E. zinckenella pod borer using completely randomized design (CRD). The highest pathogenicity isolates was exhibited by STA 1 belonged to Metarhizium genera.

Abstract

Forecasting of brown planthopper attack or BPH (Nilaparvata lugens Stal) using artificial intelligence and vegetation index of Sentinel-2 Satellite Imagery improves forecasting the incidence of hopperburn. This study aimed to determine the accuracy and correlation of the random forest classification of Sentinel-2 imagery to the incidence of hopperburn reported by Plant Pest Organisms Observer (PPOO) and determine the best method for predicting it. The study was done through observation and secondary data processing about the age of the plant, the incidence of hopperburn by BPH, interviews with farmers, and PPOO. The results showed that the hopperburn NDVI index ranged from 0.23 - 3.8. The random forest classification accuracy was high (Kappa Index = 0.82). The relationship between the hopperburn area from the PPOO report and the predicted area from Sentinel-2 images classified as (R2 = 0.53, R = 0.728) with the equation Y = -1.5 + 0.82 X. The correlation can be improved using spatial regression Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR4) with the best gaussian distance of 1.76 km (R2 = 0.6, R = 0.77). The best prediction for the NDVI stage of hopperburn attack time series with random forest (RMSE = 0.12819) was better than the prediction of the hopperburn attack time series with the exponential smoothing method from the PPOO report (RMSE 3.302184).

Abstract

Land conditions in Sungkai, Padang City, have slopes and high rainfall. The causes low water absorption capacity. For this reason, it is necessary to plant plants that can help increase water absorption, one of which is bamboo plants. This activity was carried out on November 6, 2021, to empower the community of farmer groups in the Andalas University campus with a focus group discussion on agricultural issues and planting bamboo trees. The activity consists of four stages: preparation, counselling/socialization, focus group discussion, and field practice. There are five main problems to solve. The issues found are 1) how to handle flooding in the river; 2) how to control plant-disturbing organisms without using chemicals; 3) new land clearing methods so as not to damage the environment; 4) how to obtain and treat good seeds and seedlings before planting, and 5) farmer group dynamics and their resolution. Planting bamboo is one of the steps to deal with the problem of flooding. Bamboo has a very tight, broad, and strong root system to strengthen the soil structure and withstand water runoff. Bamboo plants can also become new hosts of pests that damage cultivated plants. The service team synergizes with extension workers to understand bamboo, which can be an alternative in sustainably conserving soil and water.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the problems and develop rice agribusiness in Mentawai Islands from upstream to downstream and formulate appropriate policy recommendations to be implemented. The research location determined by purposive namely in the village Makalo and Malakopa District of South Pagai, Sikakap subdistrict Taikako Village, Village Saumanganya District of North Pagai, Bosua Village and Village Beriulou District of South Sipora, Village Rogdog and Madobag District of South Siberut. Respondents in this study were 30 farmers. Respondents farmers selected by simple random sampling method. The results showed that the majority of rice paddies new openings in six districts consist of peatlands with a depth varying from 0.4- > 2.0 meter, fields new openings that have been implemented in the Mentawai Islands in general can not be expected to result in maximum productivity due to problems of land suitability diverse. Farmers also do not take action appropriate technical culture starting from land preparation, seed selection, weeding, fertilizing and water management. Behaviorally agriculture, farmers in Mentawai Islands is not a society that blends with the culture of rice fields, it is because basically their agricultural base is dry land agriculture with farming patterns. This will certainly give a great challenge and not easy for the cultivation of rice in the Mentawai Islands.
