Abstract

Abstract Acute respiratory infection (ARI) was a common health problem that had the potential to cause greater health problems. One causes of ARI was the presence of members who smoke. This study aimed to determine the relationship between smoking behavior with the severity degree of ARI. It used observational analytic research using cross-sectional approach to adult patients at Puskesmas Bumiaji. The sample was chosen by Purposive Sampling and resulting 82 respondents. The variables measured were smoking behavior and ARI. The data was analyzed using spearman test with the result of p=0,000 (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study was that there was a relationship between smoking behaviors with acute respiratory infection. Keywords: smoking behavior, severity degree, acute respiratory infection (ARI).

Abstract

Chemotherapy is one of the therapies for cancer patients that cause some side effects, one of them is nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting are still felt by patients even though they take antiemetics. Nausea dan vomiting can cause fluid and electrolyte imbalance. In other side, pain is the most clinical mannifestation in cancer patients that can reduce their quality of life if not properly managed. Acupressure therapy is one of the complementary therapies to reduce nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy and pain. The aim of this study was to analysis the effectiveness of acupressure in decreasing nausea-vomiting and pain due to chemotherapy effect in breast cancer patients. This quasi experimental study was involved 16 respondents. Acupressure given by used an acupressure wristband for 1-4 days after chemotherapy. Nausea-vomiting and pain levels were measured pre-post acupressure through the questionnaire by telemonitoring method. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using paired t-test for nausea vomiting and Wilcoxon for pain. The results of this study there were significant differences nausea-vomiting and pain score before and after the acupressure intervention with a p-value 0.03 and 0.026. Acupressure therapy significantly reduce chemotherapy induce nausea and vomiting and pain in breast cancer patients. Acupressure therapy is recommended as a consideration for nursing interventions in treating breast cancer patients who experience nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy and pain so that patients can follow the chemotherapy cycle according to a predetermined schedule and improve their quality of life. Keywords: acupressure, nausea and vomiting, pain, chemotherapy, breast cancer.

Abstract

Cancer patients usually experience disturbing nausea and vomiting, although they have consumed some medicine before, during, and after chemotherapy. Chemotherapy-induced nausea and Vomiting (CINV) is nausea and vomiting experienced by patients as a result of chemotherapy. CINV is the most significant effect of chemotherapy from the patient’s perspective. CINV is reported as acute, delayed, and combined from both cases. CINV that are not managed properly can cause some problems, such as fluid and electrolyte imbalance, interrupt the next chemotherapy cycle, and decrease productivity and quality of life. Rehospitalization costs caused by CINV in the health care system are high. By the CINV management that is being improved in this time, some patients still experienced nausea and vomiting. Nowadays, non-pharmacological therapy like relaxation techniques is very suggested for patients to relieve CINV. Twenty-five minutes of an audio relaxation technique is effective in decreasing nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. One of the audio relaxation techniques is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). The case report was taken from one of the type A hospitals in Jakarta, Indonesia . It consisted of 20 cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy. After doing PMR exercise guided by an educational video on a tablet for 4 days after chemotherapy, it was found that there was a 35% decrease in nausea and vomiting scores; they felt comfortable and more relaxed. The interesting educational video of PMR supports the patients to do the exercise well when done in the hospital or at home. Therefore, preventing or reducing the potential problem caused by nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy can increase the nursing care quality for the cancer patient. The results of this case report indicate that progressive muscle relaxation can reduce nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy.
