Abstract

Writing scientific articles is an essential academic competency for students of the Teacher Professional Education (PPG) program. However, many students face difficulties in understanding research methodology, academic structure, as well as data processing and scientific language. To address this issue, Universitas Negeri Medan (UNIMED) initiated a Collaboration for Scientific Article Writing Assistance involving lecturers, mentor teachers, and PPG students. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study method to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and document analysis of article drafts before and after the mentoring sessions. The results show that this mentoring program improved students’ academic competencies, with 85% of participants acknowledging the benefits of the guidance in understanding the structure and quality of scientific writing. Additionally, 70% of students expressed high satisfaction with the program, with the increased number of articles submitted to national and international journals serving as an indicator of its success. However, challenges remain, such as limited time and restricted access to scientific references. Therefore, it is recommended to improve access to academic resources and develop online platforms to support more flexible mentoring. Overall, the results of this study affirm that academic mentoring collaboration is an effective strategy to enhance the scientific writing skills of PPG students and strengthen the academic culture in higher education environments.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of errors or causes of students solving statistics questions and describe students' difficulties in solving statistics story problems. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research which uses 3 research subjects. The research instruments used were test sheets, interview guidelines, and observation sheets. After the instrument is declared valid by the validator, a field trial is then carried out to analyze student errors. The research results showed that: Based on the results of the student answer sheets and the results of interviews with the 3 subjects, 3 errors were found in solving statistics story questions, namely conceptual errors, principle errors and procedural errors. The student who experienced the most errors was the student with the initials MA, and the student who experienced the fewest errors in solving statistics story problems was the student with the initials AD. The factor that causes students' errors and difficulties in solving word problems is that subjects with conceptual errors do not understand the concept of the mean and do not write down the definition of the mean. Furthermore, subjects with principle errors are subjects who do not pay attention to the prerequisites for using formulas because they forget how to do the questions. Then subjects with procedural errors are subjects who are less careful when calculating the final answer because of the subject's habit of not checking again when they have received the answer.

Abstract

Affective support from teachers—such as academic expectations, attention and care, and constructive feedback—plays a critical role in students’ learning outcomes but is often underexplored in large-scale educational assessments, particularly in developing countries. This study examines how Indonesian elementary students perceive teacher affective support and how these perceptions relate to their literacy and numeracy performance. Using data from the 2023 Indonesian National Assessment involving 214,481 fifth-grade students, we employed K-Means clustering to identify latent student profiles based on their literacy, numeracy, and self-reported perceptions of teacher support. Variables were normalized, and the optimal number of clusters was determined using the Elbow, Silhouette, and Davies-Bouldin methods. Five distinct student clusters emerged, each characterized by unique combinations of academic achievement and affective perceptions. High-achieving students consistently reported more positive perceptions of teacher support, particularly in terms of feedback and expectations. ANOVA tests confirmed significant differences (p 0.001) across clusters in all affective and academic variables, with moderate to large effect sizes. The findings highlight the alignment between academic success and perceived teacher affective support. This clustering approach reveals nuanced student profiles that traditional methods may overlook, offering a data-driven foundation for differentiated teaching, teacher training, and policy interventions. Clustering national assessment data provides actionable insights for enhancing affective support in classrooms. The methodology is scalable and adaptable for use in other educational systems seeking to personalize instruction and promote equity.

Abstract

Strategic Interventions for Character Development in the Era of Society 5.0: A Systematic Literature Review of Indonesian Higher Education. Globalization has introduced foreign cultures that threaten students' moral integrity, making character education essential to shaping and preserving their identity. Objectives: This study analyzes strategic efforts in the campus environment as drivers of student character formation in the era of globalization. Methods: This study used a systematic literature review with a descriptive-qualitative approach to synthesize and analyze existing research on student character development. Data were collected from Google Scholar, Scopus, and ERIC databases, focusing on journal articles published over the last 10 years (2015-2025). The literature search used several databases with relevant keywords, applying inclusion and exclusion criteria based on study type, language, and publication period. From an initial search using the keyword "Student Character," based on title and abstract relevance, 27 articles focusing on practical character-building efforts were ultimately selected for thematic analysis. Findings: A critical evaluation reveals common methodological weaknesses in Indonesian character education studies: predominantly qualitative designs lacking quantitative validation, small sample sizes limiting generalizability, the absence of longitudinal studies for long-term assessment, and insufficient control groups to establish causality. Publication bias is evident, with studies predominantly reporting positive outcomes while minimizing limitations. The quality of evidence remains moderate, with few studies employing rigorous measurement instruments or validated character assessment tools. The quality of evidence remains moderate, with few studies employing rigorous measurement instruments or validated character assessment tools. Despite these limitations, this review highlights the effectiveness of integrating character-building through courses and extracurricular activities. Conclusions: Holistic models incorporating local wisdom, along with organizational activities such as scouting, student associations, and anti-corruption education, effectively foster essential traits involving tolerance, responsibility, critical thinking, independence, creativity, and honesty that support student identity in globalization contexts. However, future research requires more rigorous designs, standardized tools, and transparent reporting to strengthen the evidence for character education in Indonesian higher education. Keywords: analysis, student character, globalization.

Abstract

Quality learning requires the systematic integration of literacy and numeracy as foundational competencies that support students’ critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and overall academic achievement. This literature review aims to identify the specific strategies used to integrate literacy and numeracy and evaluate their impact on critical thinking, conceptual understanding, and student engagement within the Indonesian education context. A narrative literature analysis was conducted by reviewing empirical studies, national education reports, and policy documents published between 2009-2023. Sources were screened based on their relevance to integration models, curriculum implementation, and measurable learning outcomes. The findings indicate that literacy–numeracy integration is most effective when implemented through contextual learning materials, project-based learning, and the Independent Curriculum, which collectively enhance students’ analytical thinking and comprehension of academic concepts. Evidence also shows that literacy-focused interventions and expanded access to learning resources increase motivation and engagement, although numeracy performance remains comparatively lower and requires stronger reinforcement. Overall, this review demonstrates that meaningful integration of literacy and numeracy contributes significantly to students’ readiness to engage with complex academic tasks. The study concludes that targeted integration strategies, supported by appropriate curriculum structures and equitable access to learning resources, are essential for improving learning quality across educational levels.
