Abstract

The scaling action often puts pressure on the gums, which causes sores with symptoms such as pain, swollen gums (gingivitis), a bright red color, sensitivity, and bleeding easily. After scaling, the patient will be given mouthwash so that the gums are healthy again. Mouthwashes containing anti-microbial substances can be classified into two namely the active substances derived from plants and those made from chemicals. However, long-term use of chemical mouthwashes can result in a number of side effects. Long term use of chemical mouthwashes can result in a number of side effects and is expensive, so the use of herbal inrediets is an alternative in oral medicine. This study aims to determine the effect of gargling Aloe vera solution to accelerate wound healing after scaling. This study used a descriptive quantitative. The number of samples is 30 people, 15 people gargling with Aloe vera solution and 15 people gargling with mineral water. The results showed that in all patients who were given aloe vera intervention, the wound healing process was faster than that of those who rinsed using plain water.  Keywords : Aloe vera; wound; scaling

Abstract

Dental and oral health should be taken care of from an early age, as dental condition can affect dental health in adulthood. Our gums can get damaged if we don't brush our teeth often, especially before going to bed. Gingiva is a part of the mucous membrane of the mouth that surrounds the tooth neck and covers an ungrown crown. It serves as a structural support for the surrounding tissue. The study investigated the relationship between the health status of the gums and the habit of brushing teeth at night in children aged 10-12 years. This research uses quantitative research with analytical observational design and a purposive sampling approach which means that samples are determined with certain considerations or have criteria to be met. The study involved 143 students aged between 10 and 12 at SD Inpres Unggulan BTN Pemda, with 66 samples. The results showed that 34 people (51.5%) brushed their teeth at night, while 32 people (48.5%) did not. Among the children who brushed their teeth at night, five (7.6%) had healthy gums, 28 (42.4%) had mild inflammation, and one (1.5%) had moderate inflammations. Among children who didn't brush their tooth at night there were none of them having a healthy gum, 24 (36.4%) experienced mild inflamation. The results of statistical research show that p 0.05 is 0.005. So, there's a significant link between the habit of brushing teeth at night and the health of the gums.

This research is a type of quantitative research which has a sample size of 70 people with a sampling technique, namely stratified random sampling. The data analysis used was univariate & bivariate analysis with a statistical test, namely the Paired T Test. The results of the research showed that providing counseling using poster media via the WhatsApp application was relatively effective in increasing the motivation of students at SMA Negeri 1 Barru in maintaining healthy teeth and mouth.

Abstract

Pangkajene and Islands Regency is one of the regions in South Sulawesi with the highest prevalence rate of dental caries, reaching 55.83%. Dental caries is the most common dental and oral health problem in Indonesia, caused by a lack of knowledge about dental hygiene, which also affects people's skills in maintaining dental and oral hygiene. One of the vulnerable social groups that needs attention is children living in orphanages. The aim of the research was to determine the relationship between knowledge level and skill level on the prevalence of permanent dental caries in children at the Mattoanging Orphanage, Pangkajene District, Pangkep Regency. This research method is classified as a quantitative research type using a cross sectional approach design. The sampling technique used was total sampling where all members of the population totaling 45 people were sampled. The statistical test scale used is Chi-square with a significance limit of 5% (α = 0.05). The results show a significant relationship between the incidence of permanent dental caries and the level of knowledge (p-value 0.019) and the level of skill in maintaining oral hygiene (p-value 0.001). The conclusion is that there is an inverse relationship between the level of knowledge and the level of skill on the incidence of dental caries. The lower a person’s knowledge and skills in maintaining oral hygiene, the higher the chance of them experiencing dental caries.

Abstract

Mouthwash should not be used carelessly because if used incorrectly it can cause side effects even though it has many benefits. Mouthwash is a liquid antiseptic that has been proven to help eliminate bad breath. This liquid removes bacteria from places that are difficult to reach with a toothbrush. Mouthwash has several benefits for maintaining dental and oral health, including: reducing dental plaque, preventing caries and cavities, and treating mouth inflammation. Mouthwash has several advantages, but also has several disadvantages, such as: drying the mouth, worsening mouth inflammation, and triggering allergic reactions. The purpose of this activity is to educate posyandu cadres and the general public about how to make mouthwash for their own use, how to use mouthwash that is made by themselves, and how to use mouthwash that is sold freely. This community service will be carried out in May - July 2024 in Karunrung Village, Rappocini District, Makassar, starting from exploration, licensing, and implementation of counseling, education on the manufacture and use of mouthwash to prevent the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries among elementary school students remain high to this day. The occurrence of dental caries is often linked to poor oral hygiene, leading to damage in the tooth's hard tissues. A promotive and preventive approach is necessary, especially for elementary school students during the critical period of transitioning from primary to permanent dentition. Objective: This community engagement program aimed to improve dental hygiene and oral health among elementary school students through education, mass toothbrushing activities, and giving topical fluoride. Method: The methodology included dental hygiene and caries examinations, followed by educational sessions, mass toothbrushing activities, and the administration of topical fluoride to protect teeth from caries attacks. The evaluation of success is determined by comparing the oral hygiene index before and after the activity. Results: The evaluation results indicate that the educational outreach and mass toothbrushing campaign have had a positive impact on improving the overall oral hygiene levels of students. The number of students classified under the "good" category has increased, while those in the "fair" and "poor" categories have shown a decrease. Conclusion: The comprehensive approach, comprising dental health education, mass toothbrushing sessions, and the administration of fluoride during this community service initiative, has proven to yield positive benefits in enhancing the oral hygiene of students.
