Abstract

Background: Postpartum fatigue is a highly prevalent condition affecting up to 88% of mothers in the early postpartum period, negatively influencing maternal well-being and breastfeeding outcomes. In Indonesia, fatigue contributes to low exclusive breastfeeding rates, which remain below national and WHO targets. Digital health solutions offer promising opportunities to provide continuous breastfeeding support; however, existing applications are predominantly infant-focused and rarely address maternal psychosocial needs such as fatigue and motivation. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of the SmartBreastfeed mobile application in reducing postpartum fatigue and enhancing breastfeeding motivation among mothers during the first six weeks after childbirth. Methods: A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design was employed among 64 postpartum mothers recruited from two urban health facilities. Participants were assigned to either the intervention group using SmartBreastfeed for four weeks or the control group receiving standard education through leaflets. Postpartum fatigue and breastfeeding motivation were assessed using validated Indonesian versions of the Postpartum Fatigue Scale (PFS) and Breastfeeding Motivation Scale (BFMS). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and ANCOVA with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Mothers using SmartBreastfeed experienced a significantly greater reduction in fatigue scores compared with controls (Δ = -13.5 ± 5.2 vs. -4.1 ± 3.8; p < 0.001). The intervention group also demonstrated significant improvements in breastfeeding motivation—including increased intrinsic (p < 0.001) and extrinsic motivation (p = 0.02), and reduced amotivation (p = 0.01). ANCOVA showed the intervention as the strongest predictor for improved outcomes, with medium-to-large effects (partial η² = 0.09–0.27). Conclusion: SmartBreastfeed effectively reduced postpartum fatigue and enhanced breastfeeding motivation through personalized digital support integrating self-monitoring, educational modules, reminders, and motivational messaging. This user-centered innovation shows potential to complement community maternal health programs and improve breastfeeding success in Indonesia

Abstract

Background : Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a major occupational health concern among agricultural workers in Indonesia. These conditions commonly arise from repetitive workloads, awkward or non-ergonomic body positions, and insufficient understanding of ergonomic practices. As a result, farmers may experience ongoing discomfort, reduced work capacity, and a decline in overall well-being. Objective : The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an Ergonomics Exercise Program (EEP) in alleviating musculoskeletal complaints among farmers. Methods : This study applied a pre- and post-intervention design involving 85 farmers. Symptoms related to musculoskeletal disorders were evaluated before and after the intervention using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Nordic Body Map (NBM). The Ergonomics Exercise Program was carried out over a two-week period, with participants performing 10-minute exercise sessions each day prior to starting work. The intervention focused on flexibility training, strengthening of core muscles, and correction of working posture. Changes in MSD symptoms were analyzed statistically to determine the effect of the program. Results : Before the intervention, 54% of participants reported mild pain, while 46% experienced moderate pain levels. The most commonly affected body areas included the calves (62.3%), lower back (45.8%), arms (40%), and shoulders (28.2%). Following the implementation of the Ergonomics Exercise Program, a statistically significant reduction in musculoskeletal complaints was observed (p < 0.05), particularly in the lower back, shoulders, and calves. Conclusion : The findings indicate that the Ergonomics Exercise Program effectively reduced musculoskeletal disorder symptoms among farmers. Incorporating ergonomics-based exercise routines into agricultural nursing and occupational health initiatives may offer a practical and sustainable approach to improving worker health and preventing MSDs in rural farming populations in Indonesia.

Abstract

The problem in this study is that farmers are at high risk of musculoskeletal disorders due to non-ergonomic work postures, which have an impact on poor sleep quality. Community-based non-pharmacological interventions to address this problem in the Indonesian farming population are still very limited. This study aims to evaluate the effect of a community-based ergonomic exercise program on improving sleep quality among farmers. The method used in this study is a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design without a control group. A total of 85 farmers were selected using purposive sampling in West Bandung Regency. The intervention consisted of ergonomic exercises (stretching, core muscle strengthening, relaxation) for 10-15 minutes per session, 5 times a week, for 2 weeks. Sleep quality was measured using the Indonesian version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed a significant decrease in the global PSQI score from 12.92 (SD=4.71) to 11.61 (SD=4.29) with a mean difference of -1.31 (95% CI: -1.89 to -0.73; p<0.001). The effect size was in the moderate category (r=0.359). The proportion of respondents with good sleep quality increased from 9.4% to 22.4%. The discussion in this study is that ergonomic exercises are associated with improved sleep quality through muscle tension reduction, autonomic nervous system modulation, and increased postural awareness. These findings are consistent with previous studies in working populations. However, the absence of a control group limits causal conclusions. In conclusion, community-based ergonomic exercise programs show potential as a feasible and acceptable promotive-preventive intervention to improve sleep quality among farmers. Further research with an RCT design and longer duration is needed to confirm causal effectiveness.

Abstract

Exergames are a digital innovation that combines physical activity with interactive gaming, potentially enhancing the health and well-being of older adults. This scoping review aims to explore the effectiveness of exergames in supporting active aging. Data were collected from several academic databases, including PubMed, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, SAGE Journal, and EBSCO Host. The search was conducted using keywords such as "exergames", "digital intervention", "active aging", "older adults", "elderly", and "health benefits of exergames". The initial search yielded 441 studies, but after the screening process, 6 experimental studies were selected for further analysis. The findings indicate that exergames significantly improve balance, muscle strength, mobility, and cognitive function in older adults. Additionally, exergames contribute to increased motivation and social engagement in physical activities. However, the adoption of exergames in Indonesia remains limited due to low awareness, technological accessibility, and cultural adaptation challenges. Nurses play a crucial role in educating, facilitating, and integrating exergames into elderly healthcare services. Further research is needed to develop culturally appropriate exergames tailored to the needs of Indonesian older adults and to evaluate their long-term impact on quality of life.

Abstract

Background: Sexual harassment is a persistent social and public health problem, particularly in urban contexts where complex social interactions and power relations are prevalent. While existing research has largely centered on victims’ experiences, limited attention has been directed toward understanding the motivations and behavioral patterns of perpetrators, especially within the Indonesian sociocultural context. Objective: This study aimed to explore the motivations, behavioral processes, and cognitive patterns underlying sexual harassment perpetration based on perpetrators’ own perspectives in Bandung City, Indonesia. Methods: A qualitative study employing a phenomenological approach was conducted among individuals convicted of sexual harassment and currently serving sentences in a correctional facility in Bandung City. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify recurring themes related to motivations, behavioral development, rationalization strategies, and moral awareness. Results: Six interrelated themes emerged from the analysis. Sexual harassment behavior was driven by internal psychological factors, including sexual desire, curiosity, emotional dysregulation, and low self-control. Social and cultural environments that normalized harassment reinforced these behaviors. Power imbalances between perpetrators and victims facilitated domination and reduced resistance. Harassing behaviors typically developed gradually, starting with minor boundary violations and escalating over time. Perpetrators employed cognitive rationalization and strategic risk management to justify their actions and avoid detection. Moral awareness and remorse varied and often emerged only after legal consequences were experienced. Conclusion: Sexual harassment perpetration is shaped by a complex interaction of individual, social, and structural factors. Understanding perpetrators’ motivations and behavioral patterns is crucial for informing comprehensive prevention strategies, rehabilitation programs, and policy development. Integrating perpetrator-focused education on consent, emotional regulation, and ethical behavior alongside victim-centered approaches is essential to effectively reduce sexual harassment

Abstract

Depression in the elderly is a public health issue that is sometimes influenced by low social interaction, but community-based studies are still limited. This study aims to analyze how social engagement relates to depression severity among elderly. This study used cross sectional approach and recruited 56 elderly participants aged 60–72 years. Depression level measured by the 30 item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Social engagement was assessed with the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, and linear regression analysis. Participants averaged score are 13.70 on depression (SD=5.77) and 17.57 on social engagement (SD=2.79). We found a negative correlation: less social contact linked to higher depression level (r = –0.288, p = 0.031). Regression confirmed this pattern which social engagement predicted depression levels (B = –0.398, p = 0.002). Social engagement is important to reduce depressive sign and symptoms among the elderly. Community-based programs is needed to strengthen social support to improve mental health in elderly.

Abstract

Dementia is a syndrome characterized by a decline in intellectual ability that is severe enough to interfere with an elderly person's daily activities. It is still unknown whether specific variables are most frequently linked to dementia in nursing homes, despite the fact that a number of factors are known to cause dementia symptoms. The purpose of this research was to identify the risk factors for dementia in senior citizens residing in assisted living facilities. This study has a cross-sectional design. Eighty-six senior citizens, ages 60 to 90, who resided in two nursing facilities in Bandung and Garut, Indonesia, made up the research sample. The Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), which has a cut-off score of 24, is used to screen for dementia. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test and logistic regression to examine the link between risk factors and dementia. Education (p = 0.001), BADL (p = 0.014), IADL (p = 0.023), phonemic fluency (p0.001), semantic fluency (p = 0.001), QoL-physical (p = 0.007), QoL-psychological (p = 0.002), QoL-environment (p = 0.001), diabetes (p = 0.013), and depression (p = 0.001) were all significantly correlated with dementia, according to the results. Logistic regression tests showed that education (p = 0.005), phonemic fluency (p = 0.001), and QoL-psychological (p = 0.043) are known to provide the most significant contribution to the occurrence of dementia in senior individuals in nursing homes. It is advised that healthcare professionals offer preventative and promotional actions for senior dementia prediction.
